What lesson can we learn from the likes of Watford, Bournemouth and Leicester, maybe even Norwich ?

That the camaraderie of promotion or surviving almost dead cert relegation can take a team beyond their paper ability. We became drunk and smugly complacent on our own propaganda and documentaries.

Well, only two of them are above us in the table. The fact Bournemouth are on a high ebb and we're on a low one doesn't mean they're better than us.

However, we can look at Watford and especially Leicester as good examples of workrate, aggression and clinical finishing.

Deeney and Ighalo are two very good strikers. Exactly the type of players we lack. What frustrates me is we could have a chance of signing either one of them in the summer if our board backed it but we won't and someone like West Ham will.

have to assume they will be gone in the summer

I remember well the clamour on this forum to sign Troy Deeney in the summer but of course our tight fisted board were never going to splash out the huge money required to sign such a superstar.

Since leaving St Marys yesterday rather fed up with the efforts of the team, I have watched Newcastle, Villa and Swansea and found three sides lacking in confidence, movement and a quality striker who are worse than us both on ability and points to date.

Now I will relax and accept that this season we are not going to beat enough top 8 sides to be up there, but could easily finish 10th - 14th.

I think ourselves and Swansea are very similar in terms of what we're trying to achieve and the obstacle we've hit. A lot is made of moving to the next level, but that next level for us (above top 6 finishes/Europa league etc) is so hard to get. They've hit the same brick wall as ourselves, trying to go up that notch when the top teams want your best players is hard. The way we both do things is right though, we follow the right principles and neither club really panic - which is why, even after the recent struggles, we'll still be better placed long-term.

Started looking at the bottom of the table for the first time in three seasons. Not since the early months of the first season back. Glad Swansea only managed a point.

Anyone else started doing the same (apart from Dalek who thinks that we will be relegated)

Yeah, I looked yesterday. Wish I didn't!

So sacking Monk was not a panic? Problem is not getting to the next level, problem is falling way below the last level. A season or two of consolidation would be fine.

We were always going to struggle to match last seasons efforts. The fact is, in the summer it was easier for the likes of Stoke, Palace and Leicester to strengthen. We had to sell first, then attempt a minor rebuild. Very much a case of one step forward, two steps back. I think our recent success has led to too many people expecting improvement season after season. It's simply not possible with the way we are run. We're all p1ssed off with our terrible form, but we will turn it round. We can moan how Leicester and Watford are better than us, but if they keep it up then it's doubtful they will be lining up with as strong strikeforces next season.

We have the FA cup still, the league campaign was always going to disappoint. The most frustrating thing was the Europa league exit.

Now Ron has the Christmas period to show what he's really made of. Will be interesting to see who he picks for the Arsenal game.

How do you consolidate a 20 year high? I got laughed out of Dodge for daring to suggest that we were 'regressing to the mean'; I've not seen anything this season to suggest that that's not true and that we are (now) as far as ever from being an established top 6-8 club.

Top 6-8 clubs are always looking to add players and improve, we've always got 1-and-three-quarter eyes on the balance sheet.

Not knocking it, me and the nipper were weighing up the pros and cons of relegation on the way home: don't need a ST, you can get home tkts on an as when and if basis, away tickets easier to get, cheaper ground prices over the season, more chance to see the home grown players, less mercenaries, and you get rid of the plastics at SMS.

Did Half man Half biscuit ever pen Relegation Heaven? They probably should have.

Watford reminded me a bit of us under Strachan: impeccable organisation, hard-working and two tricky and physical forwards. They made the game wonderfully simple.

Thought Lallana was dreadful, so ineffective and would be no use - even to us - in his current form.

First time anyone has ever called Ormerod physical. Hard-working yes, tussling with Skrtel, no.

You consolidate by following up 8th and 7th with a couple more seasons around 7th-10th. Quite simple really. We shouldn't expect to improve every year, just unrealistic. Consolidation is ok, but out and out regression is just not acceptable.

Where does "out and out regression" start for you, then?

Please say finishing twelfth.
