Koeman's post-Spurs press conference

As reported by Simon Peach...

@SimonPeach: Koeman: "I was expecting a difficult season honestly because expectations were higher than what is normal for Southampton"

@SimonPeach: Koeman: "We need to change our mentality - we are too nice on the pitch. They need need to win the battle against their opponent"

@SimonPeach: Koeman: "We were so naive defending. It starts mentally & not to play nice football - we know we can do that. It's about killing the game"

@SimonPeach: Koeman: "Maybe the players are living with what they did last season. If we don't give more than 100%, we have a normal team"

@SimonPeach: Koeman: "Maybe if they go & look at the table they will realise it's not too late. React & to understand to what we need at this moment"

@SimonPeach: Koeman: "We are not good enough when the referee blows his whistle. We need everything to be a strong team. The first goal killed everybody"

@SimonPeach: Koeman: "The second season is always difficult for players, for a team that achieves more than expected. Opponents aren't afraid anymore"

@SimonPeach: Koeman: "It's difficult to change the mentality. It's about the mirror in front of you, what you're doing this season. Maybe I make changes"

@SimonPeach: Ronald Koeman the angriest & most emotional I have seen in his 18 months in charge. Furious with his players

I don't really see what he can change.

When you look at the bench none of the players on it have showed they deserve a starting spot (many the opposite). Will he bring Reed in from the cold? Martina? Ramirez?

Maybe a game against a good team like Arsenal, and these comments, will spark a reaction but if not then it has to be either a couple of good January signings or perhaps a shock Managerial change (not my preference) as currently we are showing relegation form, performances and 'atmosphere'.

From the YT coverage RK saying we will be more physical against Arsenal.

To be that would be Yoshida for Cedric, Romeu for Davis and Long for Tadic or along those lines.

Doesnt sound like Pelle or Wanyama would miss out if we are going that way.

To me those changes would make us worse, not better.

3 obvious changes to make I think.

Wanyama dropped

Pelle dropped

Gaston given a chance in the squad, if not starting

I won't hold my breath on any of them though

Pelle has no service and Gaston has long had his goes and failed every time.

Need premier league standard players or we perform like this.

See this is not new.

Koeman did not have it easy at Valencia or Benfica, but soon after things started going badly there he often turned against someone, either the press or some players. And he also got very furious publicly. I think this can be very poisonous for everyone who he is working with.

It seems to me that he feels more comfortable with showing out that he is trying his best and no else is than just staying calm and adopting a more protective stance, and being a bit assertive. This shows that he is constantly more concerned with protecting himself above everyone else, which really isn't the best thing a leader can do.

I was never too much of a fan of him, and as time goes by, I realize that his task really was to assure some continuity to a project that while more modest in ambitions, showed no signs of decline. Time is showing that his performance was better when his hand in things was yet to be visible, and while he may not have had much to do with the departure of many players, I think we are realising that there is a reason why we don't attract more than potentially average talent and his ex-players.

I think Koeman really needs us more than we may end up needing him.

Hasn't let us down? He's been pants every time he's been given a chance.

Up front as a lone striker, that simply isn't true is it? I don't think he's the long term answer, but Pelle is out of form and needs taking out for a few games, and Rodriguez is injured. Having someone who is prepared to run in behind and into channels will give us a different approach in attack

If Pelle actually connects with the ball a couple of times in the penalty box today we probably win the game. At least take a point.

Fine margins. They weren't better than us, they just killed the game. Koeman is spot on, we weren't ruthless enough in either box in important moments.

Watford away he was up front and was terrible. Last week he was poor again missed a sitter. He's only ever scored 7 goals of less. If u think he's the answer we are a joke.

Very good at Chelsea last season and also this season at City. So he hasn't been awful every time. Pelle is woefully out of form, we either stick with him and pray something changes or we're pro-active and try something different. Long would at least stretch teams a bit more and hopefully free up some room for Mane and Tadic. Might not work, but I don't think he'd do a worse job than Pelle is currently

Drop Pelle and push Mane forward, why not try Juanmi, he looks like he has a killer pass in him, removing Pelle would refocus the attack, then take out VW and replace with AR

Still not convinced that HR shouldn't be playing instead of Clasie who so far has looked anything but.

Each time we sub off Davis we look worse, Back 4 I'd stick with along with Gazza

Long is the last chance sub, someone to run around and maybe get a pen or force a mistake , he's not a starter in my view

He was saying killing mentality I was hearing Harry Reed!

It is strange the situation with Harrison Reed. Not long ago Les Reed was saying he's the best thing to come out of the academy, now he can't get a game and was almost loaned out in the Summer. I thought he looked pretty good what I saw of him last season, I thought he could only get better given more game time. Then I was told about him having nights out with his mates at nightclubs and thought that didn't sound like something the club would be too pleased about. I wondered if his fall from grace was because of his off-field behaviour but now I wonder if his behaviour is because he feels he has no chance of getting a game and so he's less focused. I do wonder what Les Reed thinks about it now given the praise he heaped upon him.

That reminded me of this article from the hateful Neil Ashton;

I always love how some of the lads like Reed appear to be the golden choice to make things better. Reed must have gone backwards and isn't even starring in the 21s. Doesn't that say all you need to know. Maybe he will work out but clearly from the fact these lads aren't being picked is down to the fact that they aren't impacting the 21s or impressing in training enough. I can't imagine they'd be ignored if they were doing the business in a business like football.

Pelle out of form, Jay Rod not the same player, Shane Long is a impact sub at best.

Its not Rocket science stop patching up the holes with budget players sign some quality in Jan.

Charlie Austin for me no brainer.....

Absolutely. Austin would have followed up Mane's strike that was parried by their keeper. Pelle stood there like a lemon.

Long is always a let down. Like today and like against Palace.

He isn't the answer.

Personally I feel a bit sorry for long, when he's not played out of position, Koeman plays a completely defensive lineup(City and palace games). He looked dangerous and scored against city once we gave him support. He's not a superstar but he is a decent squad player IMO.

Definitely reed or Romeu deserve a chance rather than the currently awful wanyama. Doubt Koeman has the stones to drop wanyama though.

Yet again the critics of Pelle sharpen their knives.Where's the service? Where's his protection from the Ref? He laid off three sitters for Mane and Davis but never got into a position to score himself as our corners and crosses were up to the usual standard of abysmal.Wrestling and shirt pulling appear to be the norm.I wonder how many bruises he has tonight?

Can people stop saying Austin! He is staying at QPR until the summer. Jose attached the players, 1 game later he was sacked. Hope we don't sack Koeman but if we lose against Arsenal and West Ham I think he could be the next manager to go.

IMO if we fail to pick up points against Arsenal and West Ham, then the crunch games for Ron will be Norwich and Watford (with FA Cup in-between) poor displays there and he's in trouble.

We could be in the relegation zone after the Norwich game. I think the mentality of the club has to change. Some went into the season thinking we would have an easy season in the league and have a European adventure and maybe some good Cup runs. As I advised, we should never have taken the EPL status for granted. We can still shake ourselves out of this arrogant complacency but we need to do it soon.

Still can't believe you supported the guy who ruined our greatest ever players career. Hoddle is a terrible man.

No that was Wanyama & Tadic!

Have to disagree there fella - thought Tadic was one of our best players today - got some lovely crosses in, just no one took advantage.

Totally agree about VW though - it was disgraceful the way Dembele just brushed him aside at times, and VW fell over like a little girl (apologies to little girls). If Spurs still want to pay £20M for him in Jan then defo go for it, or a straight swap for Dembele.

Agree with a lot of of what he says, Wanyama should be a key man for us, but isn't.

Would also lump Fonte & Bertrand into that criticism as well.

True, Koeman is known for criticizing players who don't deliver for some time. I don't have a problem with that at all, when you get payed millions to put on a short in public you must face the consequense as well when you play like a turd. I don't believe Koeman does this to wash himself clean, he's just expecting a reaction from the players in order to turn things around. Sometimes this works against Koeman, especially when the results don't get any better. In that case it's better to move on, a manager is "a passer by" anyway. And you're wrong: Koeman doesn't "need" Southampton at all, when he leaves some other job will come along.

I agree. Pelle didn't stop giving up, even when things clearly were going against us. He kept on trying and you cannot fault his effort levels.
