Jimmy Hill!

Part of the staple diet of football in the 70's on The Big Match etc, when he was a pundit.

Didn't always agree with him, and there was a pro-London club bias (not surpringly on LWT at the time),but enjoyed some of his "sermons".

Only in later years did I realise his influence, and achievements (as manager of Coventry in particular).

Always remember in the Euro Championships 1980, he and Lawrie Mac semed to enjoy clashing in the pre & post match summaries, both much more enlightening then the dullards they roll out now.

Along with David Coleman, Brian Moore,Bill McLaren (and even Eddie Waring) he'll remain one of the voices of football/sport in my mind.

Todays game owes a lot to Jimmy Hill.

He led the campaign to abolish the maximum wage for players (it was £20 a week) and also pushed for the rule change to bring in 3 points for a win.

At Coventry he introduced an all-seater stadium and was the first to do post-match analysis on TV. In many ways he shaped the modern game.

Wouldn't it be nice if there were a maximum wage now though and one we could afford to pay!

I know that this isnt really appropriate on an obituary thread - but he was one of only two people on telly in the 1970s that made my skin crawl. The other was Jimmy Saville. Im not in any way accusing him of anything untoward, but for some reason he gave me the creeps as a kid.

Met him once in the boardroom at Fulham (long after his playing days) and found him to be a charming, polite man who had time for all around him !

A true achiever who made a difference.

RIP (legend) !

Im sure he was a great guy, not sure why he aroused that reaction in me.

As said, more liked in his later years, was a bit annoying on The Big Match and World Cup panels, even if he did know his stuff. Remember him taking a lot of stick from Saints fans on the terraces at Blackburn. It was a live FA Cup game on a Friday night in 84 and the Beeb decided to tuck their TV Box up in the corner of our end. Once everyone realised he was up there he was getting pelters.

Can't forgive him for that shocking song he introduced at Cov and what a profile! But a football man through and through.

RIP.
