Fickle football fans... being fickle shocker!

Its not new, especially since the birth of internet forums. The endless negative random musings of depressed fans grates and is part of the reason I rarely use this site anymore. The club is in the best situation it has ever been in and people still moan.

tell you what, this is absolutely nothing compared to the early 90s.

The fanzines were by a country mile worse than anything posted on here.

Ugly Inside and On The March would have created a virtual over-load had that been today

so if anything, football fans are far more forgiving, softer, less abrasive about absolutely everything

Just look at the last fans forum. One of the highlights was the discussion about ladies football wear.

could you imagine that being of such importance as dave jones got ripped to shreds in the Polygon conference room 20 years ago?

dread to think what this place would be like back in the branfoot days

Its a football forum FFS. Its exagerrated, irrational, emotional debate about a football team.

People take things said about the club or players etc way too much to heart.

Everyone on here wants Saints to be the best they can, and if things aren't ideal like at the moment are bound to have opinions and frustrations about it.

If everyone agreed and reacted rationally to everything then the game would be dull, most of the football media wouldn't exist and this forum would have barely any users.

Must be said continual "apologists" are on the same level as continual "bedwetters" too.

Those publications only came out periodicly so you only had to read it once but the over reactive garbage on here is posted over and over

I'm not solely talking about league positions. In any case I don't think there is a great deal to separate two of the three players we lost last summer (van Dijk/Alderweireld and Cedric/Clyne), Clasie still has a lot to prove if he can ever get to Schneiderlin's level. We do now have extra depth to the squad, as we signed players in addition to those we replaced. That is extra depth compared to last season, but many fans are too quick to jump negatively on a run of bad results.

But in general the club over the past 3 years is in the best place it has ever been. We have a combination of very good infrastructure at the stadium and training ground, a strong top flight squad, a very well respected academy and a good owner. We have never had all of those in place before in 130 years and next season's TV deal will allow the club to strengthen further relative to European clubs and those English clubs not currently in the top flight.

But!! every virtually thread is infested with the knee jerk stuff

put people on ignore?

you dont have to be the self-appointed challenger to everything

I remember the appalling abuse some of our players used to get DURING A GAME from the back of the milton.

a few comments on here is nothing like that.....

you cry because a few people dare question Koeman. Yet 25 years ago, people campaigned against the manager, publicly hoping he dies.

we never got relegated under branfoot either

You mean compared to a bland culture of consensus, ruled by the dicta of positive thinking and other 50,000-packed stadia jizzery, as if disagreement is a mortal sin.

It's been a breath of fresh air since you left.

spot on MLG, i very much agree with this post. I think a number of posters are very unhappy with life in general but use football / this forum as an outlet to express their negativity and dissatisfaction.

In terms of the overall health of the club we're in the best spot we have been in my lifetime I agree. And I think next summer we can really make some signings of intent to push on (though some of that will be tempered by the fact many other clubs can too). This season hasn't been great though - in fact I think it has been poor - and I don't see why pointing that out is a bad thing. Bad decisions have been made in transfers and in important games and it has really cost us.

Its an online football forum FFS!

... quite right and according to Helmet in Chief everyone who posts on an internet forum (mongboard in Chief Mong's terminology) is a helmet, apart from him and his "mate" of course...

Who cares if the forum has lost it? The only benefit of posts here is to cause amusement for Chief Helmet.

I lost a lot of interest after our European exit. Going to Holland was fantastic and I wanted more of that, conceivably it could be a decade or longer before we get to experience that again and all the hard work from last year was tossed away in two rubbish games. Ho hum

I agree with this. No matter that the club is in the best of health - this season has been poor; the team don't look cohesive; we don't play with the same intensity or stamina. What happened to the Southampton Way? I guess its been hijacked by Spurs and Boscombe.

It is simple. We are not allowed to lose. We can occasionally draw but it is better if we do so by coming back from 2-0 down and equalising with the last kick. If we do lose the manager is crap. Whatever the result JWP is crap. The Board have no ambition and are just in it for the money. None of them knows anything about running a football club. If players wish to leave the club to further their career it is the fault of the Board. Cortese was a footballing genius and the Board screwed up big time by not letting him have all the money he wanted so that his dream of Championship football could have been fulfilled. If you aren't a bed wetter you are a Happy Clapper and as such your views are null and void when we lose (or sometimes draw) a football match. It is important to pint out at least every two days how poor we have been since we let Morgan go and how we haven't replaced him. Koeman is only interested in Dutch players and will play them (or any who have played football in Holland) regardless. Koeman is clueless tactically. He got lucky last year. The Leibherrs are tight fisted bastards who are holding us back by not ploughing their money into our football club. It is Les Reed's fault that Toby Alderweireld decided to sign for Spurs.

I may have missed a few things out but if you stick to these guidelines you cant go far wrong on here.

Ever since saints forever people have been whinging that this forum isn't how it used to be (probably even before then with the newsgroups.) the reality is it has always been the same. Have a debate and a laugh and ignore the pointless reactionary stuff and it isn't half bad.

I have been consistently criticised for my consistency over the last 15 years.

Meltdowns are not unusal on here, in fact they are fairly frequent. But for me the worst came in the summer of 2014 and it seems that many who took umbrage at what happened during that close season surface again the minute there is a loss or poor performance or a perceived dodgy signing to vent their spleens once more. For some reason the club has to be perfect on every level. As I said earlier, we cant lose football matches and people cannot make mistakes. None of that would happen if Cortese and His Vision were still here no doubt.

there hasn't been the joy amongst the team that seemed to abound last year. However,

we are only 5 points off last year's point total after 16 matches.

last year after 16 matches: 26 points

this year after 16 matches: 21 points

The inability for the club to effectively replace Schneiderlin (understandably) is at least worth 5 points after 16 matches, no?

We got a bit spoiled last year when we found last year's like-for-like replacements more than fit the bill. a la..

Pelle for Lambert

Tadic for Lallana

Bertrand for Shaw

Alderweireld for Lovren

Forster for Boruc

the odds of that type of replacement success can't be expect every year (really can't be expected ever!)

i kinda dissagree with some comments saying the club is in its best posistion since for ever, i think 70's was much better time for the club in terms of consistancy and so on. never forget beating united in the FA cup final in 76 either. Also finishing 2nd in teh old league 1 in 1984 i think if my memory is right some thing like that any way or was it 1986 either way we did finish runners up in 1980's ( i do have the shirt some where will haev to get it out of the actic some time and have a look )............. was quite an achievment too. are rise from league 1 to now was awesome, but last year achievements and now the drop of in the performance of the team is ruining all the hard work that has been done over the last 6 years tbh.

i am dissapointed with current performances / results but thats football, Enjoy the times while being good and challanging and keep faith when not performing at top level, but we do need some investment though on players to replace first team players that are currently not doing a decent job for us, but again this might just be that some of the new players need more time to get used to playng for us ( cause ive seen us play some amazing football just dont last more than 10 - 20 min a game haha ), cant keep buying cheap for ever and expect to stay in top half of the table, we cant make a profit and see the club losing its audiance which has been built up over the last few season which is giving us some great great publicity.

Thats just my opinion though, i would take it with a pinch of salt, but the team is far far far from playing any where near their best imho, we could be playing so much better, ive seen it this season we all have which is why some fans are not happy with current performances and results which is 100 % understandable, am sure RK and board feel the same

Just want to put a big shout out to Leicester currently beating Chelsea 2- 0 :D
