Don't believe we are in for Austin otherwise the press would have been all over it. Not a word from any of them.

Makes me believe more, we are quiet about our business! I am trusting the K Billy thumbs up, not sure he has been wrong before

First, your numbers are woefully misleading. In 2013/14, QPR were in the championship and played 46 league games, so he missed a larger share of their games (around a third of the season). Pointing to the number of games we played in the prem with fewer fixtures is plain irrelevant. This season he's played 16 of 26 games (60% of games), so again your benchmark is way off. What ultimately matters is being available for the team at the time. You're being either willfully or unwittingly obfuscatory.

Second, the past is not necessarily a guide to the future; nor does it always reveal a player's proneness to injury. That's the purpose of a medical which is as much a forward-looking assessment -and the fact is numerous red flags have been raised (see his failed medical at Hull and Sullivan's comments). With time, age and general wear and tear, those risks typically become larger.

Thank you for saving me from getting into a debate with the resident statto. Very well put by the way. Excellent post.

you would expect to sell long for nothing short of £12m. if he was to leave

If he was to go this January to Liverpool , id expect a profit on 12m !

Yes, if 'sky souces' aren't aware of it, it can't possibly be happening.

Great news, the player we have needed. It's certainly in his best interests to sign now, chance of a late push for the a spot in the England squad.

People still bringing up Charlie Austin being "injury prone".

Lets look at the last 5 seasons...

2011/12 Saints played 46 league games, Austin played 41

2012/13 Saints played 38 league games, Austin played 37

2013/14 Saints played 38 league games, Austin played 31

2014/15* Saints played 38 league games, Austin played 35

2015/16 Saints played 21 league games, Austin played 16

In total in the last 5 seasons, Saints have played 181 league games and in that time Charlie Austin has played in 160 league games = 88% of the number of league games our club has played in the time period.

12/13 he was in the Championship with Burnley as well. You can't argue with his goalscoring record though, so if he stays injury free for say 90% of the games we play he should be a very good signing.

Nobody is reporting Austin to saints even though he is odds on. Why? Prob because there is nothing in it.

Probably because it's saints and the mainstream simply don't care enough to look into it.

I've had a sneaky feeling Charlie Austin would join us since QPR went down. The way he was saying he will only move to the right club for him and his family, which I assumed ruled out Newcastle and anywhere up North that would want him. So a move to a London club, Bournemouth or Southampton (closest PL clubs to where he's lived most of his life) seemed the most likely options. I also heard once that he was a saints fan when he was younger but that might be BS

K-Billy any chance you could confirm whether your thumbs up was because A. You know we are interested and something is imminent or B. He is a player you personally would like us to sign

This will then help me decide if I should continue to check every half an hour for any update.

Thanks

From today:

This says QPR havent received ang offers for Austin and he wants to stay til end of the season and assess options then (as would be sensible for any free agent).

Bookies odds are a waste of space IMO. Probably last week he was 1/5 to go to Newcastle, Sunderland or anyone else.

While I have no doubt that the red-hot investigative journalist from West London Sport dot com has just put the phone down on Charlie, his agent an most of the QPR hierarchy, there are lots of things that would also be "sensible" in this situation - like the club trying to move the player on now, and interested clubs preparing to pay a fee to secure him now, and both the selling club and buying club working together to cover any financial benefit that the player thinks he might get by waiting around until June. All of that is "sensible" too.

But yeah, if WestLondonSport.com say it's over, then it's over.

4M is an utter bargain and worth the gamble should there be any truth at all to the dodgy ligament rumours/libel.

Based on prices being paid for strikers these last two seasons he'd only need to score 4 for us in a season to get the value return.

I put £900 on him signing for us. Did that 3 days ago at 7/1..... Make of that what you will ;)

Did anyone trust me on post 47 and post 52 and put any money on it ?

:) :)

Alex Crook ‏@alex_crook 4m4 minutes ago

Been asked by a couple of people about Charlie Austin to #saintsfc rumours. Do not believe they are in for him.

Must be happening then.

Alex Crook is a complete waste of space! Why do people still employ him and ask him questions? Crook by name, Crook by nature.

Great signing IMO - has a great scoring record at St Mary's and long may it continue!

Simply superb to get Austin at £4m, plenty left in the kitty and time in the window for once! What else do we need lads? Loan or permanent, right back cover and attacking midfielder, perhaps. Last year we petered out, perhaps in 2016 with some quality new blood we are due a late surge!

Do we really think that Stephens is ready to play in the premier league given he didn't get enough playing time on loan? Is Gardos close to full fitness? Is it likely that Martina can play CB at a premier league level? Don't we need even more back ups at CB if we are going to play three at the back? Don't we need to prepare in advance for Fonte's inevitable decline--he is 32 now after all?

These are all questions.

Jack is meant to be off to QPR as part of the agreement to sign Austin.

The skates on POL seem to think we're in for one of their players, Conor Chaplin. Needless to say they're not very happy.

Unfortunately, the rumour seems to have been spread by one of those twitter ITK accounts.

More chance of us signing Charlie Chaplin, I would have thought ... :D

DUO IN FOR BYRAM

Sky sources understand West Ham have matched Everton's offer for Leeds United defender Sam Byram and it's now down to the player himself to decide where he goes.

Everton remain hopeful of concluding a deal for the 22-year-old, who did feature in Leeds' squad on Saturday but did train today.

Will he get a game at Everton unless they sell Colman? West Ham on the other hand will need to buy Jenkinson next summer otherwise Byram might be first choice.
