steve55 Posted 7 December, 2015 Posted 7 December, 2015 Hi All, I don't know about you but I've been really impressed with Virgil van Dijk's form this season and I think it's worth considering if he is the best signing in the Premier League or not or at least the best defender. I found an article online that suggests he is, take a look! Click Here To Read
Batman Posted 7 December, 2015 Posted 7 December, 2015 he is not the best defender in the league. not far off but a few ahead of him
Crazy Diamond Posted 7 December, 2015 Posted 7 December, 2015 Not while Mahrez at 24 years old has 15 goals in all competitions and six assists in the league - and signed for just €500,000.
ScepticalStan Posted 7 December, 2015 Posted 7 December, 2015 It certainly looks like it at the moment. We would probably be a good 5 or 6 points worse off without him in the side. Much as I think we're far weaker than last season (mainly because of the loss of Schneiderlin and the resulting collapse of our midfield), 3/4s of our first-choice defence, Bertrand/VVD/Fonte, are actually still very good top-half Premiership players. Thank God.
Saints foreva Posted 7 December, 2015 Posted 7 December, 2015 Alderweireld has been a better signing for Spurs imo.
angelman Posted 8 December, 2015 Posted 8 December, 2015 Alderweireld has been a better signing for Spurs imo. Personally couldn't give a **** whether he was "a better signing for Spurs", as I am only interested in Saints. I am more than happy with Virgil, who is often our best player, and just wish he was allowed to roam forward a bit more.

sadoldgit Posted 8 December, 2015 Posted 8 December, 2015 He is quality and in an ideal world we would have him and Toby at the back with Jose as back up. Sadly it isn't an ideal world!
The9 Posted 8 December, 2015 Posted 8 December, 2015 Top three signings this summer: Schneiderlin, Alderweireld and Van Dijk.
Junior Mullet Posted 8 December, 2015 Posted 8 December, 2015 Nope. Plenty of really good PL signings this year and he's not top of that list. As others have said, Toby to Spurs was a better signing for starters. Virgil catches the eye because he attacks the ball, he's a big lad and is a real threat from set-pieces. However, his positional sense needs quite a lot of work and in particular his eagerness to attack the ball out of position can leave holes and force other players out of position. By contrast, Toby last year didn't catch the eye quite so much but his positional play was superb and his calmness helped the defence operate well as a unit. The best defences work as a unit. I'm sure the coaches will work on this with him. It also can't help that we don't have a regular RB and with Font's recent injury things have been unsettled.
Junior Mullet Posted 8 December, 2015 Posted 8 December, 2015 Top three signings this summer: Schneiderlin, Alderweireld and Van Dijk. I'd argue Payet has been better for West Ham than Schneiderlin. I'd say the same for Cabaye at Palace.
The9 Posted 8 December, 2015 Posted 8 December, 2015 I'd argue Payet has been better for West Ham than Schneiderlin. I'd say the same for Cabaye at Palace. I agree with Payet when he was fit, but his long term injury reduces his impact a lot. Haven't seen much from Cabaye that would make me think he was in the same class - but then I wouldn't be saying that about Schneiderlin if I didn't know to watch for the correlation between his appearances and Man U clean sheets, so maybe I just need to watch more Palace (which I also won't be doing this weekend).
VectisSaint Posted 8 December, 2015 Posted 8 December, 2015 Not while Mahrez at 24 years old has 15 goals in all competitions and six assists in the league - and signed for just €500,000. I think the OP meant this season (if not then there are plenty better). Mahrez signed in 2014. The article actually suggests that Payet is the best signing this season, although he is injured. VvD is certainly our best signing this season. Is he better than Toby (who signed for Spurs this season)? Not sure yet.
eddie Posted 8 December, 2015 Posted 8 December, 2015 best signing.....of all players in PL at the moment? Or the best one of those that were purchased this summer? sadly schneiderlin has to be up there in the top 5
Convict Colony Posted 8 December, 2015 Posted 8 December, 2015 I heard on the commentary for villa that they said he was the highest rated defender so far this season in the premier league.
DuncanRG Posted 8 December, 2015 Posted 8 December, 2015 (edited) Maybe the best defensive signing if you exclude keepers, but that's not saying much considering only a couple of major teams bought in that area. Alderweireld's his only rival, and considering how improved Spurs defence is I'd probably pick the latter. Clyne might be a shout as well for consistency, though Liverpool fans will know that better than me. Neither are anywhere near the best signings overall, not over Mahrez, Cech, De Bruyne, Kante, Cabaye... Schneiderlin might prove to be one of the best but hasn't done so yet. Kingsland Red Posted 8 December, 2015 Posted 8 December, 2015 Kante, Shaqiri, Payet, Mahrez spring to mind as well as Schneiderlin. I agree that he may be the best defensive signing, but no THE best signing
S-Clarke Posted 8 December, 2015 Posted 8 December, 2015 Why is Shaqiri one of the best signings out of interest? Just because he's a name? Bar his showing v Man City he's done very little for Stoke.
Kingsland Red Posted 8 December, 2015 Posted 8 December, 2015 Thought he and Bojan bossed us a few weeks ago

You haven't seen the correlation in his appearances and United's defensive record then? Conceded 3 without him tonight, having only conceded 3 in total in the last 9 matches he's started. They've only lost one match he's played in this season out of 15, and lost 3 of 9 without him. This for a team that wins far more than it loses to begin with.
