FA Cup 3rd Round Draw - Crystal Palace at Home

Where's all the optimism gone? We will win this at first attempt.

We're more than capable of beating palace on our day (and they us). I'm just disappointed we didn't get a draw against someone more interesting. Playing PL teams in the cups just isn't than interesting when your team is in the PL.

Let's hope the team are more up for the game than you bunch of moaning plums.

Time for the club to wheel out a load of footage from The 76 Final, and Poen Top Bus and Civic Centre Welcome and show it to the team - show them what An FA Cup Final win means.

Their chance to be Southampton Legends and mark The 40th Anniversary of that win in style!!

Palace at home .... not only did we beat them in The Semi Final, but they play in Claret and Blue - the same as our 3rd round opponents that year Aston Villa.

IT'S OUR YEAR I TELL YA

Wasn't there a birds/animals link to every opponent in the 2003 cup run as well? So we start this time with Eagles ....

Yep .... Spurs (Cockerals), Millwall,(Lions) Norwich (Canaries), Wolves and Watford (Hornets) but we ran out of luck with Arsenal not be Asses

1976 from the 5th round to the semis had WBA (Throstles) Bradford City (Bantams) and Palace (Eagles)

Stick a Pony or a Monkey on Saints having a good cup run this year ;-)

Palace are my Portsmouth. Growing up in South London most of the kids supported Palace. They used to turn us over quite frequently in the 60s and 70s so I often got a load of verbals. Selhurst Park was a regular for me until I moved away from the area but I still go with some of my old school buddies occasionally. This is a must win for me!

In the old days lots of fans would have settled for a home draw in the expectation that we could win and progress and maybe even win the FA Cup. Years of failure seem to have driven the expectation out of us.

In the old days there weren't a bunch of regulations allowing the topmost teams to spend a fortune more than the other teams on their players, and players didn't almost always leave the other top division clubs to sit on the bench for the topmost ones. Football has changed, not expecting anything from the cup until you're at the QF stage is pretty much standard for all non-top 6 clubs now.

With you on this one, I live there now & drink in Penge. The majority of the people I know support the peg sellers too so I could do with a couple of wins against them.

The consensus seems to be that they're focused on Europe and basically doing what we did last season, so will ship the reserves in for the cup game. I would say that'd give us quite an advantage but I could also see RK doing the same! One even said to me on Monday evening that they'll take the 3 points on Saturday and we can stuff them in the cup if he was given the choice. I want both. :x

Anyone remember a particularly ill-tempered home match v Palace in the late 70s when they kicked Saints off the park? When the teams emerged for the second half the whole Dell chanted in deafening chorus: "Animals! Animals! Animals!" at them.

We won 2-0 or 2-1 I seem to recall.

The usual big-club pandering nonsense. Why they've managed to avoid Eastleigh v Bolton and shown Man U and Chelsea in totally routine home wins (even for Chelsea on current form) God only knows. Well, actually we all know why, bunch o' plastics.

Maybe the BBC were worried that Bolton might fold before the end of the month.

Was really hoping the Eastleigh game would be televised, the pay day would have been good for them. The fact that they've chosen United and Chelsea though really is a joke, as I said above they show United regardless of the opposition as they will attract the highest viewing figures justifying the respective networks expensive tv deals.

Who on earth would be interested in Eastleigh vs Bolton really. Unknown non-leaguers against nearly bankrupt has beens, no interest in that at all.

An ex premier league club now struggling at the bottom of the Championship up against a non league club doing very well. It would be a giant killing if Eastleigh won and that's exactly what the FA Cup is supposed to be about. As a neutral I'd much rather watch games like this instead of United or Chelsea who seem to be on tv at least once a fortnight already.

Oxford vs Swansea and Wycombe vs Villa are infinitely more exciting as a neutral in terms of a cup upset than United or Chelsea.

Well, I think I recall that match, but if we're thinking the same, I remember it being a windy midweek game against Orient with most of the ground baying for cockney blood. Feisty atmospheres, a thing of the past.

The only game I don't understand them showing is Spurs v Leicester, a fourth choice match in any given Prem weekend.

I think he might mean a League Cup replay in September 77. We won 2-1 in extra time with Ian Turner saving a penalty and the ref blowing the final whistle as they were scoring from the rebound.

In the original match, it all kicked off and Phil Boyer and Jim Cannon sent off for fighting and it carried on for the replay. Pretty tasty on the terraces IIRC.
