Palace v SAINTS - Build Up

How about we all calm down, and see how it goes before admitting defeat? Is that so unreasonable? Yes, weird lineup - partly enforced, partly through choice - but here's a thought: maybe the manager who got our highest ever finish last season knows what he is doing? If he's wrong, we'll give him what for at the final whistle; but let's stop the white flag waving before a ball's been kicked, eh?

Our persistent failure to ensure we have GK cover is appaling..

How many first team keepers do you want Saints to have in their 25 man squad? Forster is very close to a return, Stekelnburg has done little wrong and Gazzaniga really isn't as bad as many on here like to make out. If Saints did as you suggest and have another keeper, what would the do with all of them once Forster returns relatively soon?

If we played a side with a keeper of Gazzaniga's track record named in the starting XI we would be licking our lips. He isn't PL quality as proven virtually every time he has played for us.

Gazzaniga is statistically the worst keeper the PL has seen if you count shots on target to goals ratio. I've seen nothing from him to convince me he's up to it, BUT i'd still rather him over Kelvin.

Gazza wasn't all that bad when he played last season, probably better than Davis anyway. Of course that's not to say he won't make howlers as per usual.

Sadly it is entirely possible to be a truly awful premier league goalkeeper and still be better than Davis. Gazza ticks the first box, jury's out on the 2nd.

FFS - stop the whinging until the game is under way or finished, then you can bîtch about the selection.

Why? Surely when discussing the line-up in the build up is when people should moan about the line up. If they are proven wrong, fine. More annoying are the ones who just meekly accept everything that is done and don't have a view on whether it is good or bad. The ones that come on afterwards and say that line up was rubbish are also annoying.

Today's line up looks like a disaster waiting to happen, but then that's the problem with not having decent keeper backup when we knew we were only likely to have one first choice keeper available for most of the season (the news coming out of the training ground suggests FF may be back sooner than expected). It could have been worse, at least its Gazza and not Captain Slow. Guess that Yoshida is playing CB, that's fine, and dropping Pelle is something we should have done more often in the past.

What I see missing in that lineup is someone who can play an accurate long ball behind the defense. Maybe Davis can do it, but I'm not sure. If he is not on his "A" game I don't see Mane and Long creating problems all by themselves in the form they are right now.

So is this the line up?

Gazza

Cedric - Fonte - VVD - Bertrand

Yoshida

Wanyama - Romeu - Davis

Mane - Long

Not really sure what Yoshida's role is today. Unless he's left back again and push Cedric midfield?

He's playing CB.

Yoshida - VVD - Fonte

Cedric - Wanyama - Romeu - Bertrand

Davis

Mane - Long

The point is that most clubs would not have Gazzanigga or Davis anywhere near their first team squad, especially when one of the senior keepers is out long term. No one is seriously suggesting having Gazza and Davis and Stek and FF.
