Target men in the PL

Leicester playing 4-4-2 and topping the league. Commentator says the difference is the numbers getting into the box and pace up front.

vardy and okazaki work like slaves up top and defend from the very front.

something we really do not do.

Arsenal are probably the only decent side that go for a bigger, old style target man up top. But he is pretty mobile and the players around him are incredible most of the time

that system is kind of dying out.

it is even more about pace and movement all over the park now.

as said, we are turning into 'stoke'

Ah, so this is your current phrase that you're going to keep repeating ad nauseum tonight is it? "We are turning into Stoke"....wtf does that even mean?! You,ve never mentioned this theory before today, and suddenly something in todays game has convinced you that we are turning into Stoke, so much so that you've had to say it almost every time you've posted this evening. Did you even watch Stoke last season, or are they just a suitable boring club to pigeon hole us into for effect? Go on, say it the next time you post too, it'll be classic. You are so fickle that the comedy effect of you reacting to everything on a game by game basis is hilarious to read.

Aside from Pelle and Gestede today, which other teams in the PL regularly play 4-2-3-1 or other single-striker formations with a slower target man rather than a quicker, less physical centre forward? Giroud probably fits the bill, but I'm not sure who else.

Liverpool when they play Benteke.

Most teams play 4-2-3-1. Big physical starting strikers off the top of my head:

Pelle

Benteke

Giroud

Carroll

Gomis

Costa

Gestede (though he hasn't started for Villa all that often

Lukaku

Mitrovic

So yeah, quite a few do it and many do it with success.

All of them are much faster than Pelle too though I swear- except maybe Mitrovic.

Benteke hardly starts

Carroll only starts because the others are allout injured

Gomis has been on the bench

Costa......well

Gestede was shyte and came off

Lukaku is excellent

Mitrovic is in and out

mixed bag really

All those teams turning into Stoke. Who'd have thought it.

Lukaku, Costa and Benteke are all quick as well as strong, which was the dichotomy I set up. Of course, it's better to be both, but really the question is, if you can't have both, which seems to be the preferred option elsewhere?

Of the current top 10 in the PL, 7 of them don't play with a target man as their first choice striker.

Leicester - Vardy

Arsenal - Walcott

City - Aguero

Utd - Rooney/Martial

West Ham - Sakho

Liverpool - Sturridge

Stoke - Walters/Diouf

Only Spurs (Kane), Watford (Deeney) and Palace (Wickham) do. Take out Leicester and Watford if you wish, as both really play with 2 up front

I'm just reporting what they were discussing, I don't care that much either way. But Giroud is ahead of Walcott isn't he. Carroll for West Ham as well. Arnautovic for Stoke.

Can argue about the definition of a "target man", but there does seem to be a pattern there.

Walcott was picked ahead of Giroud this season before his injury and Arnautovic plays out wide. I'm not sure I care much either way but the trend to me suggests that those that go for pace and performing better so far

Walcott's career as a centre forward has been pretty limited, Giroud's much more successful. Who played centre forward for Stoke Saturday?
