Villa build up

I would have Clasie ahead of Wanyama, at least he wants to be here and compete for his place. Vic just going through the motions, hasn't performed for weeks now, and is on the brink of destabilising the dressing room yet again as another window approaches.

'is the brink etc', is that just your opinion or knowledge supplied by one of the player? Genuine question.

Fonte passing his fitness test will go a long way to deciding the outcome. If Caulker plays again, we might as well save Villa a trip and send them the 3 points. Caulker's display V Liverpool was Callum Davenport-like and I thought he'd been garbage v Newcastle but he went one better on Weds night. Might as well just pick a fan out of the stand and register them instead.

Whether Victor plays depends on his mindset, not that fussed on Romeu but Clasie struggled, thought he'd turned to corner but probably the worst of the midfielders Weds night. Can't believe people are saying Davis should be dropped, wasn't great v Liverpool but the whole midfield v toss and he'll be fine tomorrow and offers a lot more than JWP who needs some game time in the Championship. Might be time to give Harry Reed another try, at least from the bench.

Front 3 will cause Villa problems but hope Koeman doesn't go OTT on defensive tactics, if Jose returns it will be alright. As long we don't use our National Conference standard loanee CB we should get something from this game.

I take it no one knows the answer to my question on page 1 of this thread? The reason I asked was because I bumped into Jordy today and wondered why he wasn't at training or if they don't train much on a Friday, or he had trained and finished. He did not look a happy bunny and came across as v shy or dismissive. I quickly showed him where the European meats were and continued with my day.

Tesco still selling horse then?

No one needs reminding of that, no.

Box of frogs.

Whilst your frustration is understandable your inclination to replace Bertrand with Taggart is way off base.... Bertrand is one of the few real Premiership quality players we have, however yes changes are required but if you could drop a manager for a few games then that would be the case.... So many issues and not least the players are not fit enough and we don't have nearly enough effort or closing down... The manager needs a kick up the ass....

Defensively strong side ? By doing what, we don't really have any more quality defenders than we played last night, well Fonte I suppose instead of Caulker but after that we can just add to the numbers on defence but not really to the quality.

If we were going to go archidefensive I thought it would have been last night given the prize at stake.

If we picked Wanyama and Romeu in front of the back 4 (like we did against Villa in the League Cup) it probably wouldn't matter who was in the back 4. But Wanyama has been dodgy probably since half time against Bournemouth.

This team was good enough to beat Villa comfortably in the Cup a few weeks back and had Targett, Yoshida AND Caulker in it behind Wanyama and Romeu:

M Stekelenburg (G) 22

M Yoshida (D) 3

V van Dijk (D) 17

S Caulker (D) 26

M Targett (D) 33

V Wanyama (M) 12

O Romeu (M) 14

J Ward-Prowse (M) 16

(68 ) G Ramirez (M) 23

G Pelle (F) 19

(69) Juanmi (F) 20

Personally I'd pick Romeu and Clasie in the DM positions because I think Wanyama needs a kick up the backside after Wednesday, and this is the safest time to do it, and the rest pretty much picks itself...

Stekelenburg; Cedric, Fonte/Caulker, Van Dijk, Bertrand; Romeu, Clasie; Tadic, Mane, Davis; Pelle.

Subs: GK, Yoshida, Caulker/Martina, Juanmi, Ward-Prowse, Wanyama, Long

Funnily enough having watched it back, Wanyama was frequently more of a problem than Caulker (who was only really at fault for not closing down the first, and wasn't to blame for the second as much as the time Can had in midfield), and also explains why I thought there was no pressure on the ball for the goals.

Davis was probably our best player alongside Mane on Wednesday.

Precisely.

As for Davis he nearly closes down, nearly tackles but mostly doesn't, mostly just unloads the ball even if colleague is already marked, rarely scores and just doesn't do it for me. JWP is even worse. As for Koeman picking them, he also picked the three at the back on Wednesday, how did that go? and some bizarre failed team selections early in the season. On Wednesday Davis and JWP in midfield were non existent.

Davis was doing his bit well, it was what happened when the ball got past him that was the problem. And then we stuck him out on the right where he wasn't able to influence the game and everything came down the other side.

What I'd really like to see...

Stek

Cedric VVD Fonte Bertrand

Clasie Romeu

Mane Ramirez Tadic

Pelle

Ramirez or Juanmi. Just someone actually attacking in front of the two defensive mids. Sick of us lining up so cautiously at home. Villa are rubbish, let's attack them.

Funnily enough I'm sick of us lining up so gung-ho at home when throttling the opposition has worked for us a lot more often than trying to play 1 DM and a ball carrier, but agree that Villa at home is not the game to use two DMs even so.

Woyld expect us to win this one if we have some luck and go hard at the beginning.

Shane Long will be the important player as he will chase the defenders all day long unlike Mane who IMHO is playing with no confidence at all.

2 0 Pelle and Long with a red card to them.

This. But Davis and Wanyama in for Clasie and Romeu

I can't really see any suggested team line ups featuring players like Gape and McQueen and Rowe and other young prospects.

Lots of people on another thread complaining about lack of young players being blooded but I can only conclude they haven't contributed to this thread yet, because I have no doubt were they on this thread they'd be suggesting teams jam-packed with our youngsters. After all, that's definitely what Mauricio would be doing, right?

A lot of posts saying "we will smash them, villa are terrible". Are you for real?

How many times have we seen posters write this over the past decade? Never happens.

I'm sure someone as confident of us beating Liverpool. How?!

This'll be a hard match - southampton will make it hard in their current form.

They were talking about our game on 5Live yesterday and one of the pundits mentioned how different things could have been if Villa had held on having gone 2-0 up away to Leicester earlier in the season, plus their 0-0 draw with Man City , I am going for a 1-1 draw today

I just want a reaction. Some fight, effort and some sort of indication they aren't here for the money alone.

I have seen us play some crap stuff this season and some really good stuff (normally all in one match) but I really haven't seen a lack of effort or fight from the players. Some bad decisions and people switching off at bad times but I never got the impression they have given up and are going through the motions.

My team would be

___________Britt

Mugabe--wood----debeyo--Targett

-----Gape------Flanagan----Reed

McQueen---Seager----Hesketh

Subs

sims

Little

Isted

Barnes

Johnson

Ward Prowse

It's what Poch would have done.

Is that the team who destroyed Norwich under 21s 7-2 deserve their chance IMO at least they would be committed unlike our first team of journeymen and mercenary Carlos kickballs....

Who said that? What a weird point, you can equally say how different it could've been if we held on against Leicester

We should play the same side as Wednesday with Fonte back for Caulker the only change. Its our strongest eleven and one that should win today.Wednesday was a bad day for us and a great one for Liverpool,it happens occasionally. For me the same side will want to make amends for Wednesdays disaster.

Not that different, they'd still be in the relegation zone.

I think you might be right. Hate to say it, but I don't think the manager and some of the European players care much for the Cup games, especially the League Cup.

Probably Andy Townsend who desperately wants Villa to win, but doesn't think they. Or it could have been Pat Whatisname, ex Chelsea, who dismissed the token question about Saints and said let's talk about Leicester. However, I really enjoyed the two hour discussion about Jurgen Sodding Klopp.

JWP must come into the side and put Clasie on the bench.

More 'Durman logic' here.

Exactly what has he done to earn a recall after being poor in his last start and poor off the bench versus Liverpool?

In fact, aside from Norwich at home when they were down to 10 men after 40mins, has JWP fot beyond 6/10 once this season?

Spot on. I'd put reed in ahead of him tbh.

I think Ron will play it safe after we've let in basketloads of goals lately. Concentrate on a clean sheet first and hope we nick one or two. Not nice to watch but pragmatic.

Very much so last season was built on a good defense. I reckon defensive drills in training will be the order of the day for the players now.

Is that the Reed who played in the team who got destroyed by Norwich's under 21s the other week? the DM who was part of a team that shipped seven goals? that Reed?

Also the reed that was in the team who beat Everton 3-0 last season and Arsenal 2-0 and Newcastle away 2-1

I'm sorry Koeman but you are losing credibility.... Caulker should not be on the bench. To even contemplate playing him is pure madness the guy is total crap! Anyone would be better....

You have dropped the other obvious player who is not good enough but some freshness is required ...

Have you worked on fitness, energy, tenacity and closing down this week????

I somehow doubt it....
