Koeman: "We need to spend money"

Shaqiri is 5ft 7 ins same height as Clasie. I agree that Wise wasn't in the same class as Ball and Scholes but I still think he could play Premiership football if he was young enough today.

Apparently the average height for a male in the is country is 5ft 9 ins so 5ft 7 ins is hardly midget status. Anyone would look like a midget stood alongside Pelle, Fonte and van Dijk!

Actually with access to resources Shaqiri is actually 1 cm taller than Clasie apparently (1.70 to 1.69). Must be the fact that his shorts are too big for him and nearly touch his ankles makes him look really small. Still Jordy is 2 inches or 4cm taller than Dyer.

Really? I can see Leicester holding on. Only an injury to Vardy or Mahrez would set them back massively.

Yep, just like only injuries to any one of Alderweireld, Schneiderlin, Forster, Wanyama or Fonte would have set us back last season. And did, in the case of all but Fonte. And they have even less depth than that.

The more he remains at Saints, the more I see a comparison to Harry Redknapp's way of dealings in the transfer market. Something doesn't smell right. His latest call to spend has Harry written all over it. Time will prove me correct and till then I have nothing more to discuss.

Box of frogs.

Absolute lunatic. Let's hope you stick to "nothing more to discuss". :D

Have to say ART, comparing Ronald to the **** that is Arry Redknapp is almost the ultimate insult (and borders on the libellous).

Clasie is not the midfield destroyer Vic and Romeu are. Him and JWP are meant to be the artisans, deep lying play markers either spotting runs of the front 3 or feeding Davis or the wide men. Neither of them have had a long time in the team but Clasie played in a World Cup semi, captained feyanoord and 3 games ago was getting great reviews on here.

Translation?

according to google the title translates as

'' Southampton would like to continue with me ''

the bit underneath is

How long is Ronald Koeman still trainer at Southampton? Harry asks him! '' I've been here super to my liking and I work in the most beautiful League of Europe '', said Koeman.

Martina played under Erwin at RKC Waalwijk so he should have known what he was getting. He certainly convinced Les Reed who said 'Cuco is an experienced and versatile defender...and is the perfect solution'. With a 2 year contract reported to be £20K it's not an insignificant outlay either.

Reported where? Please and thank yous.

having already established who " Ronald's choices " are (Pelle, Tadic and Clasie)....you wonder how the others who were signed came about?.

I'm sure the " Black Box " came into it somewhere, but it's obvious that part of the discussion must have been.." this guy fits the profile of what we need for (position)"

....but it's not only Saints who buy in foreign players and see them struggle to settle into the Prem. (Man.U and Liverpool have shown some good examples of that)

Ronald would probably say...." .OK it's your money - go ahead " -and if they don't fit the mix, then SFC only have themselves to blame.

One thing we know for sure is that IF ...Ronald ever had any intention of signing Ron Vlaar (a bitter issue for some on this board 6 months ago)..then he never bothered to follow up on it, because Vlaar has now returned to Holland and signed for AZ Alkmaar. One less derisory issue to talk about. END OF.........

clasie got muscled off the ball by lallana for liverpool's second goal - he needs to sort that out

In terms of team investment, our benchmark appears to be the first choice 11 of two seasons ago and against them I think we are, at best, on a par. Trouble is other sides are investing to build their capability not sustain it, which means the net effect is we slip down the league as other sides are gradually getting better overall. Bit like in formula 1 (as incredibly dull as it is), teams that don't develop during the close season generally end up performing worse the following year.

Our huge player churn with perceived like-for-like replacements is beginning to bite us on the a4se.

Koeman says that he is going to talk about a new contract in the near future. Southampton wants to continue with him and he says that he is open for it too. If the the club can convince him that they still want to move forward.

So we've got a manager who will stay if the owners can convince him the club have some ambition to be more than mid-table. Haven't we been here before?

http://www.tribalfootball.com/articles/koeman-reveals-plans-to-listen-to-southampton-about-new-contract-4107795

Ronald Koeman is ready to consider new contract talks with Southampton. The Saints manager is keen to hear from the board of their ambitions.

"I'm curious about what the club wants and what the club thinks in the coming years should be done. "That's what I'm going to listen to and then I'll see if I stay or not," Koeman told Voetbal International. "Yes, I am happy. Because I'm super enjoying myself and because I am in the best league in Europe to work. If I see there is still a challenge, then I am happy to continue. Then we'll see what comes."

Ronald making his position clear to the club the last few weeks then. More money for players and I'll stay seems to the gist of it.

seems that way.

Looks like he is keen to stay, obviously, nearly all want him to say.

he has put the feelers out and a little challenge to the club

guess if he goes, we are not THAT ambitious

Well hopefully we are past the little money black hole the club/owner felt was an issue when Nic left and will be able to spend a bit more in the future.

As a club we are in great financial health and the summer should give us lots of financial power - the inevitable Mane sale, the new TV money and the new shirt sponsorship and manufacturer deals should not only give us more cash but also more breathing room in FFP to increase the wage bill.

However from an owner perspective we owe her estate £60m and the Board have made a commitment to reduce that over the years.

The challenge is clear and fair from Koeman though.

which is fair enough IMO not to many people even rich ones can afford to right off £60 million.

Her father bought the club for £13m, when she does sell up she will get in excess of £150m for it. Not sure why she needs the 'loans' paid off as well. The new FFP rules are trying to stop owners saying the money they put into their own clubs is in fact a 'loan'.

Well when you've a supposed 3 billion, 60 million is in fact absolutely nothing to write off, it's half of the annual interest on 3 billion invested in government bonds or something. Of course if you don't actually have 3 billion then 60 million becomes more significant as the supposed "fortune" declines. Zuckerberg gave away 45 billion dollars or something and thought it a good idea.

Not saying you're not right about this but I'd thought the owner had converted at least some debt to equity, so that she'd get her money back when the club is sold.

She will definitely do that but in October our CEO said this of our latest financial results:

“The Group’s future debt position, whilst higher than management would prefer to be carrying, was forecast and in order to further promote financial sustainability, the Group has robust plans in place targeting an on-going reduction in the debt over the medium and long term.

I still dont see why it is inevitable. why sell him?

A body double never signed the deal for him when he signed for us. Why sell him. not as if we are now in need to service debt etc.

We've done quite well replacing the manager every couple of seasons TBF.....

....having said that I like Koeman.

True. But like with be signings its tough to do continually and get right.

Plus quite a few of our better players have strong ties with Koeman so we have a better chance of keeping them.

He has done a great job with the resources provided and if he stays it would be an indication that the Club wants to keep pushing forward.

Not really the track record of a man planning on spending six years here.

He won't be staying. I would think he will sign a new, rolling contract in the summer to do one more year but not have a ticking timebomb contract everyone asks him about every five minutes. And then he'll move on in 2017.

That will do us, and him, he'll be our longest serving manager for three decades by then.

And people as ever reading too much into fairly anodyne quotes. He's not going to stay forever but he's hardly going to say that now.

But if it fuels the "we ain't got no ambition" fu ckwits then at least Ron's providing me some forum amusement.

A few more interesting comments from Ronald in the press conference for the written media.

Its on the Saints YT.

He sounds like he could be persuaded to stay longer and help the club grow and says we should (like all PL sides I guess) be able to spend more next summer.

He is very clear on the finances though: no risk will be taken and we have one of the smaller PL budgets which is offset by having a good structure and belief in what we are doing.

He mentions bottom 4 budget, but I think that can't be right.

We can spend millions on transfers but the core problem is the financial fair play annual wage rise of just £4M. This problem is why we and a couple of other clubs voted against the fair play rules. The only way around that is a massive influx of commercial revenue which i cant see happening.

You've misunderstood. The total players salary mass increase is limited to a certain amount of TV revenues, if you increase commercial revenues you can bung on as much of it as you like I think. So if you get a new shirt sponsor deal for 5 million a year whereas the precedent one was only 1 million a year you can add £8 million to your wage bill and so on. This is why getting a shirt sponsor who'll pay serious money is kinda important. It's not a massive influx really but it changes a lot.

I'd like to see Ron stay but if the club let him go it doesn't mean they have lost their ambition. In a year or two they might think it is time for a change. A number of posters kicked off over the weekend about Ron's management style and if results don't improve that discontent will only grow.
