Today is the birthday of one of the greatest ever Southampton players ... Mick Channon.

What a pleasure it was to have seen him progress from a gangly kid to Full England International and Southampton Legend.

The Windmill Goal celebration is still the best ever FACT

I "grew up" with Micky and was privileged to witness his progress from the youth team to Saints and England legend. He was my hero.

All the best to him today. I am confident he is still smiling.

Happy birthday to Mick. I remember as an eight year old seeing him score him on his debut on Easter Monday 1966 against Bristol City at the Dell. He had just about everything a forward needed, pace, balance, skill and an unerring sense of where the goal was. One on one with the keeper I can't think of anyone apart from George Best who was as good.

"You won't see a better goal than that this season." You won't see a better goal than that any season.

Any excuse to watch again...and again...

We nicked him from under the noses of Swindon, his local Wiltshire club, good bit of business.

Top memories. Dodgy accent, great player.

Strange but one of the best memories I have of Mick ....was from a Reserve game at the end of the 1964-65 season - even before he'd made his first team debut.

Last game of season v. Leyton Orient Reserves at the Dell. Orient fielded their record scoring striker David Dunmore, who rattled in a hat-trick before half time. 0-3.

The Reserve did their famous comeback act in the second half with Mick scoring twice. The equalising 3rd goal saw him charging into the box from the left wing, before hammering the ball home, then comes the "windmilling arm", with the ecstatic Channon continuing his run across the box and up over the wall by the players entrance.

I know he's scored a record number after that, but I doubt that he ever celebrated a goal like that one. Sadly today- he'd be yellow-carded for " excessive celebration ".
