Saints Vs Stoke, build up

Not good about Jay - sounds like he needs surgery.

Just wondering...the fact that VW got sent off with two bookings, does that now eradicate his bookings count, as in, is it reset back to needing 5 more to get suspended?

Something to be wary of...Pelle and Romeu both 1 booking away from a ban.

Premier League site says he has 3 yellows and 1 red, but I believe this means he actually has 5 yellows, thus he has another 5 to go before another suspension. He would have to pick up those 5 before 1st Jan.

So, to sum up:

Van Dijk (who's never played against Stoke) will snuff out their threat, but Wollscheid only having played against us once before means he won't have a clue what's going on. And you don't want Koeman to take the opposition into account when he selects his right back, but you do when he picks his central midfielder.

Oh and I'm not quite sure who has been claiming that Butland is a weak leak. Most people have been saying that he has been keeping them in games.

koeman will most likely stick with the same team that played at sunderland, with clasie and yoshida.

It's just that I think cedric is a better RB and in this game romeu is a better midfielder against stoke.

van dijk hasn't played against any (I think) of the teams we've played so far, and has done very well. So it's no surprise that he would be excellent against unknown opposition. agreed I was harsh on wollscheid. He has been decent, and you're right, the fact hes played against us once is of no real consequence.

see my earlier post about butland.....I haven't kept up with him at all, but at the start there was lots of hoo haa about him not being ready to step up into begovics shoes every week. seems he has done, and fair enough. very decent english keeper.

Lawro's prediction up on the BBC predicting a win for us which is usual a sure fire way to make us lose :p

Southampton v Stoke

Southampton are in great shape at the moment - they have only lost one of their last 10 league games and are playing really well too.

As the weeks go by, Saints are confirming what they showed us last season, which is that they are one of the best teams in the league.

Since Ryan Shawcross returned to action at the end of October, it is no surprise that Stoke have been even harder to beat, but this will be a big test for the Potters.

Lawro's prediction: 2-0

Neville's prediction: 1-0

Will Pelle get any protection from the renowned Lee Mason. We all know what the Stoke defenders are capable of and Pelle will be the target for every kind of dirty trick in the book(and a few that ain't) I just hope Graziano don't react to the provocation.

I predict a win.

Hopefully he will be wearing a nice cologne so doesn't get distracted by Shawcross's stinky pits

I think it partially resets the bookings count. The two yellows are gone (they combine as a red and the suspension), leaving him on three yellows. Two more yellows (not in the same match!) before the cut-off date and he gets another suspension, I believe.

It may be a draw, but come on, a draw at home to Stoke is not a good result for a team wanting top 6/7 is it. It's **** poor in fact.

The league doesn't need to be the priority though, it's a lot more competitive this year and i doubt we will match last season's tally. The cups must be our number one focus. We aren't Man city or Arsenal, it's almost arrogant to be expecting to beat Stoke at home, it's a tough game.

Arent you overly pessimistic, Sir?

The jordies grabbed them by their bells and rang them till St James arrived.

Shouldnt we do the same in honor of St Mary?

4-0

There were no questions about JRod's fitness at the live press conference that I was commenting upon.

Bloody journos.

Pity we don't see the part for the written journos more often, seems like a better class of hack (i.e. ones that supposedly have the ability to write, maybe even read) than in the first part of the press conference. Think we might have still learned more if Ronald had better English, was obviously not willing to talk about medical technical matters.

http://realsport101.com/paris-attacks-premier-league-criticised-for-playing-french-national-anthem-before-games-what-about-other-countries/ - what do you lot think about this playing of the French national anthem before this weekend's fixtures? it does seem a bit controvserial tbh it shouldnt have to be like this!

You would know what us lot think if you had read the other thread...

Can't agree. We need to ensure we are safe first and foremost and that means another 20 points. The Cups are just a side show.

In fact the results of the 1885/6 FA Cup make interesting reading. Byes, Walkovers, matches with both teams disqualified.

Heart of Midlothian playing against English minnows....interesting days.

Southamptons first ever game allbeit as St Marys YMA on November 21st 1885 beating Freemantle 5-1 on a market pitch alongside the old cricket ground.

the omen is 500-1

Judging by some of the team names if you could cobble 11 players together you were in. Darwen had 3 teams ffs. They must have been gutted when Blackburn went on to win it.

Anyway, 2-0 Saints, Pelle continues his imperious season with a brace.

Both parts are put up on the YouTube channel, along with a separate interview with RK at Staplewood during training.

Their view:

Apparently we have annoying fans and only sing one song. Well, they have that half right - we have at least 2 songs.

Yeah one guy complained he hated having to listen to OWTS for 90 minutes

In fairness though quite a few posters are very complimentary calling us the toughest game of the season (so far) and one of the best teams in the league a far cry from the old days when saints were considered a nailed on 3pts.

Stoke haven't conceded a goal away from home in two and a half months.

Think this will be 1-1

Yeah I guess it will be 11 men behind the ball and hit on the counter attack from Stoke (nothing wrong with that from an away team I guess) so we will we have to hope Tadic and Mane have got some tricks up their selves to open them up at the back. I think Stoke, saints and palace all have better away records then home records this season.

The weather will be a factor. It's permanently wet, cold, windy and miserable in Stoke (I live close enough to know) and they will be in their element.

We seem to go into decline once the weather is less than balmy - remember the wet night in Middjitland. (sp)

Saints 0 2 Stoke ducks.

You think we will lose because it's a bit cold?

We aren't talking about Brazil playing Finland away in January, I'm sure Saints are just as well prepared for these conditions. It was like this when we went to the Britannia 2 years ago and apart from Boruc getting completely caught out after 13 seconds we were the better side.

We'll see. I hope you're right but Tadic, for one, has said he struggles with English winter conditions. Wouldn't be surprised to see JWP replacing him. And don't think Pelle is at his best in the cold and wet.

I was at that Stoke game and we had a bigger core of home-grown players then

I grew up in Staffs for a few years, wouldn't really say it was noticeably different from anywhere else in England. It's probably on average a couple of degrees cooler but not noticeably so. Plus we've got Wanyama and VvD who have seen a couple of Glaswegian winters and the associated fun and games. Dušan has been in NL for a few years, which has a broadly similar climate, as has Pellè.

If we had a team of South Americans I'd be inclined to agree but we don't.
