Mr X Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 Good result imo 3-0 not a complete tanking so pleased!
Thedelldays Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 Always knew we would lose... IMO..red card right, penalty fecking wrong one thing though...some of the basics not being done by our players is shocking...
benjii Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 Uninspiring drudgery yet again. No game plan. No precision. No presence. No touch. No creativity. The ref didn't help but let's not pretend United broke into a sweat. Perry and Davis kept the score below 5.
Gingeletiss Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 Glad we didn't get thrashed.......but a very poor showing all the same. LOWE OUT!!!!
Arizona Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 It's a shame. We could have made it much more difficult if we hadn't shot ourselves in the foot. Terrible marking for the corner for the first. Rash tackle from Paterson for the red card. Stupid handball for McGoldrick for the penalty. I guess 3-0 isn't embarassing so overall I'm not to upset. Just hope we can get our a*ses together in the League.
benjii Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 Dull, very dull.IMO. This is the crux for me. The "pretty football" myth has died another death today.
haddock22 Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 embarresing result even against united.no shots no goals no hope one of the most one sided matches against united ever.let no one think the sending off had the slightest difference in the final result. This is a dead team walking.
theboycheese Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 How can Gillingham show more passion than us?
Saint Johnno Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 Not the thrashing I feared, but we had no attacking edge......again. Where do we go from here???????
badgerx16 Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 Completely outplayed by a team that didn't have to try. Having watched the Gillingham v Villa match, and looking at some of yesterday's results, why were we so lacklustre ? And I don't think for a minute the result would have been any different had we kept 11 players on the pitch, United simply did everything they had to and were always in control. Only positive is that it was not anywhere near as bad as Bristol Rovers last season.
Special K Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 I just hope Rupert is chatting up the Utd board as i type, asking for a coachload of nippers to come on loan until the end of the season.
Poshie72 Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 Glad it was only 3 nil but have to say that some of the ref's decisions were just awful today. He definately had a blue shirt on today, but then again when doesnt riley The game really highlighted how far we have fallen since dropping out of the prem. There is a heck of alot of work to do if we are to survive this season
sfc6mufc3 Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 How can Gillingham show more passion than us? or forest green, peterbrough etc.etc.
Micky Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 How can Gillingham show more passion than us? Better team spirit perhaps.... we look like a team that really doesn't have too much confidence no matter who we play.
Leicestersaint Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 Ruined by Mr Riley who behaved as if he is a Man United supporter.
Dalek2003 Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 I was listening on 5 live and the word used again and again was 'frightening' ie for Southampton. Still, losing to Manu, no shame there. The real tragedy is what is happening in the league. Also, Ian Holloway made a good point as to whether being beaten every week is actually going to damage the young players. Confidence wise, I would say yes.
Perennial Underachiever Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 Well thank **** that it was no worse than a 3-0 defeat. Certainly not the 7, 8 or 9-0 I was afraid of. Mike Riley is still a ****, though. Anyway, I am glad this game's over and we are out of the FA Cup, time to concentrate on the league and have an uphill battle to avoid going down into an even ****ter league than the one we're already in. Go down to League One and administration is likely.
benjii Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 Ruined by Mr Riley who behaved as if he is a Man United supporter. Yeah, we'd have stuffed them otherwise.

Only positive is that it was not anywhere near as bad as Bristol Rovers last season. Because they are 10 times better than us - simple fact really.

Both posts spot on. Not the thrashing I feared, but we had no attacking edge......again. Where do we go from here??????? Down, unfortunately
Saint Billy Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 Just another uninspiring display. Our lads are just running about with no direction or self belief. Manc never had their foot fully on the throttle and never needed to as we were as much threat as mini me wearing a suit of armour.
AndyNorthernSaints Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 Players need to learn how to defend set pieces. Saints need a centre half. Mike Riley is a ****.
badgerx16 Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 Because they are 10 times better than us - simple fact really. Like Man City are 10 times better than Forest, or Villa are 10 times better than Gillingham, or Stoke are 10 times better than Hartlepool ?
rocknrollman no2 Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 Do we have anyone who can score a goal? Still i think the ref spoilt the game with his keeness to give nearly all decisions to Manure, not that they wouldve needed them because i dont think they even broke into a sweat. Also saw that the traitor Wilde was sat by Lowe. Hope hes happy with himself.
benjii Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 It's sad because I was genuinely enthused by Poortvliet for the first four games of the season but unfortunately we are just getting worse and worse.
Thedelldays Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 dowie making good points we just lack basic passing skills (today) and showed no fight what so ever...did van der sar have anything to do what so ever..?
saint_stevo Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 Lancashire is horrible, maybe deserves a thread of his own
maxi_sopez Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 Definetly not a penalty, definetly a red card. United didnt even get into 2nd gear, the amount of times rooney and berbatov decided to pass instead of scored was hilarious. No real shots though that was worrying thing, never look like we are gonna score. Jan needs to go and someone who understand the championship and how to do ok needs to come and make sure that we survive.
badgerx16 Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 Lancashire is horrible, Lancashire is a wonderful place, Yorkshire on the other hand.....

saint_stevo Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 How can they legislate the penalty being given because DMG has his hand up? SMMMan is a c*nt
Arizona Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 Just seen the replay of the 'handball' (I only saw it once before on a small, jerky screen). No not a handball, but I can see why Riley gave the pen. If you throw your arm at the ball like that you are just asking for a penalty, whether it strikes the arm or not.
hasper57saint Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 Well that's out of the way. We were NEVER going to win this. Let's face it. Riley has never done us any favours. Manure have some of the best players IN THE WORLD and it certainly showed today. What do we have? A Chairman who hasn't the slightest idea about how to run a Football Club, a manager who would just about reach his proper level in the Conference South and a team of 'Players?' who have no experience, no idea what those white posts are for and, as this match has shown, McG and Patt will never get us us out othe mess we are in as they don't know what to do when they are within striking distance of the goal.ffs we DIDN'T have one shot on target. LOWE OUT! http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/forum/images/icons/icon8.gif
Mr X Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 At the end of the day it wasn't an important game compared to our next three! It was important not to get a complete thrashing though (five goals +) but that was about all
Thedelldays Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 What?! Does Van Der Saar often have much to do? We had ten men and we're about 40 places below them, what do you expect? We had plenty of fight but you need the ball to attack. Passing skills are fine but most our time was spent closing down and blocking. Try to remember who we were playing against. expect a shot on target we were chasing down as we gave the ball away for no reason with no players near us so many times... fecking hell...havent at least got a shot on target at anfield last season...how many places is the difference there...?
sambosa75 Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 Lets get this into perspective, shall we people. We've just played the best club side in the world and lost 3-0, thanks largely to an offside goal, an unfortunate penalty, being one man light for a large chunk of the game and one well worked goal. We didnt create much and we didnt spray the ball around but were any of you really expecting us to do so? It was damage limitation from the first kick of the game to the last. We kept them to three, which in my eyes is respectable. We can now hopefully concentrate on the league and the club has benefitted massively from a full house and the television money.
Thedelldays Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 interesting kelvin just said he saw it hit mcgoldricks arm..

But we looked pathetic
benjii Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 interesting kelvin just said he saw it hit mcgoldricks hand.. Remarkable how he's been playing so well if he can't see properly!
sotonjoe Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 Not bad really, especially given the 10 men. Wouldn't be any shame in 11 men losing 3-0 or more. They were just too good, as they would be for most the premiership too. But the referee didn't help. The offside goal is very hard for the linesman to see. The red card I disagree with but it's expected at the moment in football sadly. No leniency, the referees aren't allowed to consider players intent, which always used to be the key thing. Was game over then. Most frustrating was the second. Never a free kick IMO, and then obviously never a penalty. The best team in the world don't need that kind of help against a CCC team, but they got it. Result was fair, but that goal simply wasn't. No-one played badly though. James and Skacel kept doing all they could. Kelvin was excellent, McLaggon looked up for it when he came on. Glad it's over though. Was never really looking forward to this match and never understand why so many "fans" come back for it. I decided to save my money for league games which are more important, need the support and obviously, are more even. Would have loved a goal, but no shame in the result anyway. 4-0 with 11 highly paid men last time wasn't it? that just about sums it up for me as well. Interesting to just hear Kelvin say he thought it was a definite penalty though!

Try telling that to Southend or Hartlepool.

Thedelldays Posted 4 January, 2009 Posted 4 January, 2009 I know I shouldn't be surprised, but how the hell are some of you, and the usual ones to be fair, using a defeat by Manchester United as further evidence of any problems??!! It's ridiculous. They're much better than us. If that surprises anyone then I recommend another sport. we know they are better adrian...we all knew we would lose too what is worrying is the fact we could not defend a set piece again...that was not a world class cross from the corner, nor header by o'shea... I lost count the amount of times we failed with simple passes.... im not even on about through balls or crosses..just simple 10 yard passes to a team mate.. how many times did we needlessly give the ball away..?? of course we were going to be under the cosh and of course we WOULD lose possession..but too many times, the basics were lost...which, against any opposition is worrying..
