Jarakka Posted 7 November, 2015 Share Posted 7 November, 2015 http://www.statto.com/football/teams/southampton/2015-2016 20 after 12 games. http://www.statto.com/football/stats/england/premier-league/2014-2015/table/2014-11-24 26 after 12 games, just before the losses against City, United, Arsenal etc... We have pretty tough games in december with Arsenal/Spurs/West Ham so if we can get something out of those games and get 6 points at least out of Stoke and Villa then we're not doing too badly this season at all. Surprisingly well actually, since I thought Koeman would have a bit of a second season syndrome.

rpb Posted 7 November, 2015 Share Posted 7 November, 2015 If you compare individual results with those of last year (e.g. last year lost to Sunderland away/this time won) and substituting the relegated teams by those promoted, we are actually a point to the good... The9 Posted 7 November, 2015 Share Posted 7 November, 2015 (edited) We can't be a million miles off Said on the radio earlier we had 8 points more last season, before kick off. So the answer will be in the 5-8 range depending on how we did in the equivalent match last season. SaintBobby Posted 8 November, 2015 Share Posted 8 November, 2015 I much prefer comparing the matches like-with like (so, example: we're 3 points down v Everton at home, 3 points up v Sunderland away, same as last season v Man Utd). The problem with all the "best" or "worst" start to the season sort of analysis is they just stretch this to cover an indefinable number of matches. If we win the first three games of a season and draw the next three, that would be our best ever "start" to the season. If we lose the first two games 3-0, that would be our worst ever "start" to the season.
david in sweden Posted 8 November, 2015 Share Posted 8 November, 2015 (edited) We can't be a million miles off .I know everyone says there are no " easy games in the Prem." but there are some games you really ought not to lose, and last season we started well. We had some " softer " fixtures in the early part of last season, and that helped our new set-up that no-one knew about, Pelle and Tadic were top grade by Christmas. One year on, everyone knows about Pelle and Mane, and the threat Tadic poses... we may need alternative tactics in order to overcome the " obvious threats ". Forester Posted 8 November, 2015 Share Posted 8 November, 2015 I am optimistic because we have a better squad. We can all remember that there were times when we were struggling to be able to rest players or make changes without a big drop in quality. We have good options in midfield and across the back, Forster sounds like he will be ready to play around Xmas, and Long and JayRod will be fresh. Be interesting to see how Leicester and Wet Spam cope at that time....

Batman Posted 8 November, 2015 Share Posted 8 November, 2015 We're turning it round but not really up to last season's start yet, and IMO the league is weaker this year. I feel like we should be further up there, taking advantage of Chelsea's collapse. That Man Utd home game still annoys me. I don't think Leicester will stay up there. Amazing form, but it is form. We'll see how they recover from any blips, and if Vardy can keep going after a few games not scoring. I mean he wouldn't be the first player England ruin. Play him left wing, make out he's crap, then drop him and focus on Rooney. Which is what Roy hodgson is alluding to by saying vardy should be happy to just be in the squad. Quite right, we should really be equal points with Man City and Arsenal (before today's games), if we hadn't played so badly against Man U and Leicester in the second halves of those two games. That would have meant 25 points, and Leicester would be below us. There are times that we are playing better than last season, but there have been at least three games now where we have been abysmal in the second half, and that's what needs to be cut out of our game. fortunately the worst one cost us nothing. Utterly, utterly mad. In what sort of world would you expect Saints to be level with Arsenal and Man City after 12 games? Sure, you can find matches where we were below par (e.g. surrendering a 2-0 lead to Leicester in the 2nd half at home), but then you can say the same for Man City and Arsenal. You can't treat Man City's failure to beat Aston Villa today as some sort of natural act of God but our failure to hold a lead against Man Utd at home as a weak display on our part. Sorry Bobby, but it looks like you are the one who is a little mad. I guess you are simply unable to read a post and understand it, and also notice when a post was made. It is quite simple, after Saturday we would have been level with City and Arsenal if we had won the two games where we played so awfully after taking the lead, Leicester and Man nited. That would have given us 5 points more than we had now. So thats 20 + 5 = 25. Simple really, and perfectly achievable if we had not been so utterly crap. That is how close we are to the top of the league. Of course City and Arsenal went further ahead yesterday, but that was not the point. It is so frustrating that we can play so well and throw games away like we did at home to Man U and Leicester. Next time you want to accuse someone of being mad, take a little time, make sure you have read what you are responding to, and that you fully understand. Then perhaps also try being a bit more civil. The9 Posted 9 November, 2015 Share Posted 9 November, 2015 8, which is quite a lot in premier league terms Just realised I put that we had "8 more than last season", we actually had "8 more last season". i.e. we're doing nowhere near as well. Which isn't a surprise as we won 5 straight on a couple of occasions after the dodgy first two games.
The9 Posted 9 November, 2015 Share Posted 9 November, 2015 That is a far more meaningful statistic and very encouraging! Depends whether you think we'll be the destruction machine we were of bottom half teams for the first half of last season. I think we're struggling to win some of the kinds of games that we cruised last season. But last season we were useless for most of the last two months. So basically if we can avoid a massive fall-off in form at any point (we had 2 last year) we might do better than last year, but we're probably going to have more close games which we don't win compared to last year. That feels in line with "better squad, but not better team" to me.

You're assuming whether over 11 or 12 games that Saints should have had 5 more points. But over that run of games, we're bound to have off days and make errors. You can't just wish these away for Saints, but keep them factored in for Man City (who clearly shouldn't have lost at home to West Ham) or Arsenal. If Southampton played to our absolute best in all 38 games and eradicated all and any errors from every match, we'd probably win the league. But errors and (occasional) sub-standard performances are part and parcel of the sport.
