aussiesaint20 Posted 5 November, 2015 Share Posted 5 November, 2015 (edited) Should this be OUR song? A more recent version From our USA Saints group and r/SaintsFC: "The Bells of St. Mary's" is a song from 1917. The music was written by A. Emmett Adams and the lyrics by Douglas Furber, following a visit to St. Mary's Church, Southampton, England It passes every test of a good football song we can think of: Close historical ties ✅ Unique to the club ✅ Still relevant ✅ Slow paced ✅ Hairs on the back of the neck ✅ St Mary's Church was also where the memorial service for Markus Liebherr took place: "St Mary's Church is seen as the ideal setting for the club to pay its respects, being the location where St Mary's Young Men's Association FC was founded. 125 years later, Saints will be returning to the church to gather and remember a man who truly loved the club." We think it's time for the #BellsOfStMarys 1st link: "Oh bells of St. Mary's, we always will love you With your inspiration, we never will fail Your chimes will forever, bring sweet memories of you So proudly ring out, while we sing out Hail, hail, hail" 2nd: The bells of St. Mary's Ah! hear they are calling The young loves, the true loves. Who come from the sea And so, my beloved When red leaves are falling The love bells shall ring out Ring out for you and me The bells of St. Mary's At sweet even time Shall call me, beloved To come to your side Different variations of the lyrics. Turkish Posted 5 November, 2015 Share Posted 5 November, 2015 It might pass every test of a good football song in the eyes of a few yanks but fails to make the cut as a saints song for the following reason No reference to hating Pompey Too slow, clapping like coked up seals to this one is virtually impossible Not been sung by a Manchester club already Not to the tune of john b Nice idea but I'm afraid it's a no. CB Fry Posted 5 November, 2015 Share Posted 5 November, 2015 A definite contender for the role of "this is our traditional song it is, honest it is our traditional song" despite the fact no fu cker has actually ever sung it at a football match. It's about time Woolston Ferry had some much needed competition.
aussiesaint20 Posted 5 November, 2015 Author Share Posted 5 November, 2015 (edited) Looks like it's back to the classics then T.. "You're fu**ing shiiiiiiit, you're fu**ing shiiiiiiit, you're fu**ing sh1t, you're fu**ing sh1t, you're fu**ing shiiiiiiit" Although if anyone should be sung that song, it's probably Sunderland. Pancake Posted 5 November, 2015 Share Posted 5 November, 2015 Too slow, clapping like coked up seals to this one is virtually impossible You can't half be an argumentative bellend sometimes Turkish, but every now and then you produce a bit of gold like this. And for that I salute you.

I can imagine it now ...... The Northam all standing with hymn sheets in hands awaiting the signal from the "songs of praise" cameraman to start on his command. angelman Posted 5 November, 2015 Share Posted 5 November, 2015 Don't want to be too down on the OP, but completely rubbish song. We'd turn into a **** poor version of Liverpool with their crap song YNWA, just that it would be even crappier.
jawillwill Posted 5 November, 2015 Share Posted 5 November, 2015 I don't go to matches very often, but I was thinking it'd be great if one days fans started a song to the tune of the "Oh When the Spurs" song that Tottenham sing. Could go something like: " We are the Saints, of Southampton, We are the Saints of Southampton We're from the south coast of Hampshire, We are the Saints of Southampton"

Any fans who steal another club's song deserve to have derision heaped on them for their small-minded lack of imagination and originality.
Saint86 Posted 5 November, 2015 Share Posted 5 November, 2015 The Belles of Saint Mary's? That will be the day. I'm curious, how are you intending to turn a buddy holly song into a saints football chant Please do elaborate, I am hooked

Crazy Diamond Posted 5 November, 2015 Share Posted 5 November, 2015 I think if you're using a forum to ask if a song is any good for football fans to sing, the answer is probably no.
ART Posted 5 November, 2015 Share Posted 5 November, 2015 I'd love to see an upbeat version of "Bells of St Mary's" sung at home games. Can't see why certain other sections of the crowd can't get it going, especially now at Christmas time approaches. Phil Spector did a upbeat version but not quite how I imagine it could be done. There are Blue Grass versions that could go well with the Woolston Ferry. Bob B Soxx & The Blue Jeans
