of course it has

refs know the stage, know the age of the players

holloway and motson are stunned!

oh dear...

for wreckless challenges it makes not odds if he is 50 or 15...

If Saints chose to play a team of kindergarteners, they've got to accept the consequences and can't expect any special treatment. There is no reason why a 17 year old should get away with murder, whilst a 35 year gets a red card.

That was a dangerous tackle and deserved a red. Bit harder and he could have broken Vidic's leg.

P.S. Good to here "we're the Itchen" again. :D

And another excellent tackle from Skacel on Nani.

Perry, Davis and Skacel keeping us in the game. I'm sure those three have something in common, but I'm not sure what... :-k

I think they are in the defence

it deserved a red..

In todays climate where every foul and even non foul is a yellow. But really that is a classic example of what should really be a yellow as he didnt mean to get him.

Red or Yellow - you have to also take into account that somebody is also assessing Mike Rileys performance as well.

It looked a rash, poorly timed tackle - a red for me.

1-0 down to an offside goal at half-time... Better than expected, it's fair to say.

Indeed. Everyone's too busy debating the borderline red card when we're only 1 nil down to the world club champions.

I can be one of the biggest sceptics but we're not out of this yet!

Did well for quite a while, but needed luck with 11 men. Game over now which is a shame.

Seems the days of referees showing some leniency and appreciating a "strikers challenge" are over. Understand they'll get punished if they don't produce the red, but it never used to be like that. Not only more physical, but there was a bit of common sense when it came to an over-zealous kid, especially a striker. Recall Rooney making many such challenges in his early career and getting warnings or yellows. Now it's just red.

Oh well. No shame in losing any amount to the best team in the world with 10 men. Just wish we'd been able to put out our best team. No Holmes, Lallana or Morgan. That's pretty much our attack gone.

yes and is Lallana not there for any other reason other than "injured"?

im dreading the next few weeks, we could well find ourselves even more in the ****e

That certainly did not warrant a straight red card - he kicked the ball first.

If you make a reckless challenge, taking the ball first, ( by a fraction of a second ), but knowing that momentum will take your studs straight into the opponents shin, then the intent is clear and should be punished. What it he'd caught the players leg side on and broke it, what then ?

mate..rooney got banned for 3 games for a straight red within his first couple of games for everton..i think it was a game or two after that goal he scored against arsenal that time...

Alan Mullery just said on Sky sports that the crowd were booing the team and he couldn't understand it.........flip, how unaware can you get!!!!!!! No understanding that they're booing the ref......

The referee could have used common sense and just issued a yellow and a severe warning. Ruined a young lads big day and for the rest of the fans

Looked like a definite red, but so did the foul by Evans on McGoldrick, McG was past him and away on goal.

Pity we can't defend on corners. Gillett is garbage.

Old Mother Riley strikes again. The biggest girl's blouse on the refereeing circuit. I saw several replays and Paterson clearly got to the ball. But still, we're not doing badly with 10 men
