spyinthesky Posted 30 October, 2015 Posted 30 October, 2015 When John O'Sullivan was Commercial Manager at St Mary's he reckoned that summer concerts would be a regular event at St Mary's As far as I remember there have only been two ie Elton John and Bon Jovi It seems that Hants CC have taken up the opportunity which is possibly a better alternative to St Mary's as I recollect that dear old Claus had to pay a six figure sum to relay the pitch to ensure his testimonial v Celtic could go ahead. Just wonder what the general opinion is of concerts at St Marys and whether there is too much of a risk of damage to the pristine pitch we have
simo Posted 30 October, 2015 Posted 30 October, 2015 Unless the money earnt from hosting concerts helps reduce ticket prices I'd rather we didn't ruin our pitch again!
The Cat Posted 30 October, 2015 Posted 30 October, 2015 Probably more hassle than it's worth. With the Rose Bowl keen to host them the area doesn't really need 2 similar venues of that size.

angelman Posted 30 October, 2015 Posted 30 October, 2015 How often does the pitch get replaced? If it is on a regular basis, then it might be possible to schedule some in but IIRC most clubs rip their turf up, when needing to returf, the day after the season closes thus allowing as much time as possible for the new turf to take. With the new TV deal kicking in, there seems little point trying to make a few hundred thousand when you might be risking hundreds of millions.
The9 Posted 30 October, 2015 Posted 30 October, 2015 They take the topsoil off every summer - or at least they have done at least that for the past 2, possibly 3 years - I vaguely remember one year after Markus took over they redid the whole thing in order to activate the undersoil heating that the pipes had been laid for but hadn't been configured, or something like that.

oldskoolsi Posted 31 October, 2015 Posted 31 October, 2015 Not that it makes much of a difference but I thought Bon Jovi played there twice so there have been three in total. I don't think there have been that many more at the rose bowl. Certainly till last year there was a long period of time where neither venue hosted a band. Maybe the music climate has changed since the mid 00's when both were putting on gigs and there just aren't enough acts touring who are big enough to play multiple stadium shows.
saint lard Posted 31 October, 2015 Posted 31 October, 2015 I went to both Bon Jovi gigs and the Elton John gig......the acoustics for all were utterly atrocious. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
st alex Posted 1 November, 2015 Posted 1 November, 2015 I'd have thought that in the summer before the pitch is relaid there might be a window of opportunity to host a couple of concerts and make the club some extra money. Thought that commercial revenue was something the club wanted to improve upon, and it seems like a good opportunity, certainly easier to get to than the Ageas Bowl if you're planning to have a drink.
