Ryan Bertrand's new business

For all the stick that football agents get (often deservedly) this is the sort of thing a responsible agent does, provide for his clients long-term future, and not just make easy money by agitating for a move and taking his cut of the fee.

Matt Oakley's agent worked with him to set up a business which operated while Oaks was still playing, but which Oaks himself could go into once he hung his boots up.

The more intelligent players (of which Bertrand seems t be one) tend to have better agents, the more genuine and committed ones who properly earn their money and have a genuine interest in their clients.

Players earn so much these days, they only need a couple of sensible investments to ensure they never have to work again when they finish playing. And it's also something to keep them occupied.

It looks as though Bertrand's agent or somebody among his people have earned some of their fee by writing his quote for the piece.

Intelligent as he might be, I'm not sure too many professional footballers would use the word 'synergies'.

Better interest to have than just seeing Drake at the o2 and going to Dubai.

well when you're on his sort of salary, you don't use it all up by getting a bigger house / better car ...or buying a round every time you step inside the pub door.

I hope he's got a good investment idea, and perhaps he deserves it .....after all those years of being " loaned out " by Chelsea.

Seems like standard venture capitalist move. He's got cash and status, they've got some software and a plan. Doubt he's risking a fortune on it but makes sense to try - money attracts money. If it succeeds he can sit back and scoop a big percentage of profits. Or more likely if it's any good a big company will step in and buy him out.

With the amount of money even squad players earn in the Prem it seems amazing more of the players and ex-players don't try to actually do something with their wealth.

What would you do if you had that much cash and that much free time?

1) design and build flying car (obviously, BTTF day and all that)

2) robot ninjas (male and female of course)

3) buy Kelvin some slippers

Matt Oakley's sunglasses business has come on in leaps and bounds.

Bertrand said: “Silicon Markets has a revolutionary new business strategy based on ground-breaking technology and marketing via celebrities and sports stars. I am really excited about our potential to transform the retail trading industry, and am proud of the synergies we are developing between finance and football and how we are able to introduce the financial markets to an entirely new audience.”

Did he though?
