Saints Fan TV

I see someone has now set up a YouTube channel to get match reactions from Saints fans. I think quite a few clubs have this now and it can be pretty cringeworthy. No danger of that with Saints fans though, as demonstrated by this insightful post-Swansea interview (there are ones from yesterday , and other matches too)

I hope we don't develope the weekly ranting character prevalent on other clubs fan TV.

You remind me of my gran. She used to hate the wrestling on tv. In fact she hated it so much she had to sit glued to the tv every Saturday afternoon just to remind herself how much she hated it.

Our version of this is never going to be as good as the Chelsea or Arsenal equivalents - we simply don't have the level of entitlement among our fanbase, on the whole. Sure, they might find the occasional gem and get a bit of exposure from it, but largely it's just going to be pretty dull, I think.

TV is very much like cheap airfares.

To get on tv or fly somewhere you used to be of a certain status before you'd be exposed to the masses or our foreign friends, that status invariable meant a level of decorum could be achieved.

Now every inbred can get on tv or puke up all over the continent at 9am, its now the cast of Benidorm on ketamine.

I'm not against a 'Saints Fan TV' per se but its gotta be done right. You need a bit of a youth and energy and style, charisma and likeability. Just asking random people how the game went isn't really enough to get the channel off the ground.

The second thing is consistency. You need to be attending every game as the home matches are going to be much-of-a-muchness. The regular characters are the ones going to the away matches.

I think Arsenal Fan TV is a good example to follow - the fella who presents it is like a black version of Father Christmas: - charming guy and impossible to dislike - and provides a great foil to the likes of angry Claude and optimistic Ty who become the characters and get the show the attention.

I think you'd really struggle to find characters like that in our match-going fanbase, Arsenal fans have such a sense of entitlement that we (largely) simply don't have, which makes for extreme views and reactions to the smallest of events.

Hmm. Yeah you may have a point there.

I suppose its a case of:

Are Saints one of the 10 biggest clubs in England? No.

Where are Saints at the moment? 8th.

Where did Saints finish last season? 7th.

Where did Saints finish the season before that? 8th.

Ultimately its pretty indisputable that we've been consistently overachieving for several years now, and as such, complaints about either 1) our players just generally not being good enough for us to challenge for a higher position or 2) us having specific weaknesses in certain positions, fall a little bit hollow as more-or-less every single team outside United/City/Arsenal/Chelsea/Liverpool will have precisely the same kind of complaints. Its only when you get to the top of the league that those complaints seem either somewhat justified, or just plain funny.

To the rest of the league, our entire campaign is likely to be one massive, mediocre, mid-table 'meh' (although we'll obviously catch the eye if we give any of the big boys a bloody nose)

Jesus Christ.

I mean I feel pathetic enough for thinking that anyone might have the slightest interest in reading my Saints opinion on an internet forum.

And how annoying would it be sitting next to him every week?!

Haha!

And yet everyone loves The True Geordie who's fundamentally doing the exact same thing!

That is truly astonishing. I don't think I got past two minutes, jumped to the bit where he says he is watching the Rooney video, and then jumped to a bit at the end where he asks himself whether there is a Ted Bates stand.

Utterly cringeworthy. Blatantly he's a poster on here. Who is it?
