Our best midfield three?

So after watching our midfield look completely outclassed in yesterday's second half **** up what do people think should be our starting, regular, midfield three when everyone is fit?

For me it has to be

Steven Davis - two games, this season, I've seen him subbed in the second half followed by us getting dominated yesterday and against Man U. You can criticize his lack of goals but his work rate and closing down of the opposition is 1st class

Victor - despite his dodgy passing at times he is still the best DM we have might as well make the most of him before he moves to spurs next summer

Romeu - picks up a few to many yellows but I think he has looked decent with some good ball distribution. Also seem to win a lot in the air.

As for the rest

Can't really comment on Jordy yet as he hasn't played enough. A couple of very nice passes yesterday to set Mane off on the attack plus the pass for the goal in the under 21s game shows me he has something about him that could be effective if we can get up to speed on playing in the PL.

JWP not showing enough for me. he is technically good, takes some decent set pieces but he only really looks good when the opposition give him time and space on the ball in a battle like yesterday his inability to win the ball or protect the ball makes him a passenger.

Harrison Reed - ermmm disappeared

Do people think it works well with Wanyama AND Romeu playing together then? I got the impression they both try to do the same job a bit too much and it was better to have one or the other and then another midfielder who adds something else.

I have no idea as I've seen far too little of the matches recently, but don't we seem more effective when we just choose one of them? Genuine question, how has it looked with both playing before?

Reality is we have replaced Morgan with Clasie and Romeu and neither quite have the attributes to cover the gap (which isnt suprising really because he was class).

Hopefully Clasie improves as he gets more games but both the viewings Ive seen of him for Saints suggest he may struggle physically.

Depends who we're playing against...for me it's either:

-----Wanyama------

Davis---------JWP

Wanyama JWP

------Davis--------

OR

Wanyama-Romeu

------Davis-------

Really do not see where Clasie fits in, hopefully he improves as he settles and plays more minutes, but hasn't impressed me at all so far.

Simples.

For games where we're expected to control possession and attack more: Vic & 2 of JWP/Davis/Clasie

For games where we're expected to have to defend more and be more physical: Vic, Romeu & 1 of JWP/Davis/Clasie.

Good answer. You pick a team in order to counter your opponents strengths. We did it against Chelsea...yesterday...against Leicester - we were all at sea.

Not sure how JWP gets in there twice but i suppose on current form. He can stay there if he can add goals to his game.

but surely the dream combination is VIC CLASIE DAVIS

With cover in the form of Romeu for Vic (both hardhitting and subject to yellow cards), JWP for Clasie and Juanmi for Davis.

And lets be fair to jordy Clasie. Hasnt played. Comes on against a fit and on form leicester side. I thought the sub choice was not as good as it could have been.

Wanyama, Davis and 1 x place up for grabs at the moment.

Always worry about JWP and Davis in the same midfield as neither tackle.

Romeu too similar to Wanyama.

If Clasie doesn't break into the side eventually then I will be suprised. He was obvious signed to replace Morgan. Would start him this weekend.

Hard to judge the dutch xavi and a guy who marked messi for 30mins in a world cup semi final on hardly any minutes in a new league.

I think Ron has proven to know the current dutch market very well and he should know his captain at Feynoord very well.

Lets give him a bit of time hey, we have players suited to face all sorts of different teams, there isn't this mythical first choice team anymore.

We need to play through the midfield more then more passers, we are playing a big sam team then Romeu and Vic are in etc etc.

LOL. Even JWP is beginning to make some tackles now, but to suggest Davis does not tackle, well I think I've heard it all from you now.

Respect your opinion and I rate Davis highly.

His best position by miles is the furthest forward of the mid 3. He is better there than anyone else we have in central midfield as although he isnt a goalscorer he is more creative in his passing and touches around the box than Romeu, Wanyama, JWP etc and also has better acceleration.

If JWP starts then often Davis is shifted back, which isn't his strength.

If Davis is played further forward then JWP plays deep and must be one of the easiest players for an oppo midfielder to run past, especially someone with a bit of power.

Therefore, I feel we are not as well balanced when both play.

Is any of that overly ludicrous? I don't think so.

Very simple indeed, and absolutely right.

2.3 attempted tackles per game from Davis so far. Lee Cattermole attempts 3.2... Wanyama 2.9. (Jack Cork makes 2.6). :)

He's 151/374 for attempted tackles, and 141/352 in completed. Pretty much "above average" across all Prem teams, bearing in mind we're also 12th/20 in possession.
