We should be fifth in the league right now...

Perhaps we could have been fifth had we not had so many player changes this summer, but with our current squad we can end the season higher than Raneiri's Leicester (injuries permitting). Had Raneiri been in charge I doubt that we would be as high as 9th right now, because Ron has assembled a class team here with some brilliant signings.

heartened by the quality of the managers being considered TBH

light years away from Steve Wigley

Ha ha - I agree. Supporting Saints in the dark period of Branfoot to Administration feels like some horrible past life event that you just can't forget (which is why, when you are mullering the champions at their patch at 3-1 you still **** yourself when 5 minutes of injury time comes up)

Claudio Ranieri: Leicester City boss had Southampton talks

Really a non-story. It was well known that we interviewed more than one person. It exasperated some that we were taking so much time and appeared rudderless but it is normal that more than one person be approached, sounded out, interviewed. RK might well have been number one all along, but what would have happened if he had said "no"? We would have gone to number two. Les always said that there were a few big names on the list.

The article is disingenuous as it makes out that CR was offered the job before taking the Greece one. I suspect, but of course don't know, that that wasn't the case as only 1 person actually got the job offer.

Well it is a bit of a story as none of us knew he had talks with the club until that story broke!

OK fair enough. He was on the list of candidates that were talked to or interviewed. I guess BBC had to slightly blow that up a bit to make a story.

Hardly. 2001 to 2004 was a good era.

What are you taking about - we got to a cup final and Europe, finished mid table solidly for several seasons including eighth and tenth, moved to new ground, Le Tiss scored pretty much every single one of his most famous goals including the last ever at the Dell, we also saw brilliant players from Ekeland to Pahars, from Richards to Killer, from Berkovic and Beattie to Crouch. We had the amazing Alan Ball season, and under Hoddle, Jones and Strachan some great days. Fourth in the table at Christmas under Gordon.

Dark days and "some horrible past life event" between 1993 and 2009? You are joking, right?

Les Reed has openly said that Koeman was always first choice :)

...but didn't say that we hadn't interviewed anyone else. Maybe they convinced themselves Ronald was the right man for the job all the time and deliberately left him to last....

I do recall a interview where Les (or was it Ralph) ?....said there were dozens of people who applied .....and some "very big names", too.

Hardly think they would have blindly OK'd Ronald without interviewing ANYONE else, although he was the first choice candidate.

ALSO.... I don't recall ever hearing Ronald say that he applied himself....more likely he was "head-hunted " and then approached by the club.

The more you interview, the more you can convince yourself you are right /wrong in your eventual choice.

Maybe we should give the benefit of the doubt that so22 meant the dark periods of Branfoot and Administration. Certainly plenty of great days in between (and after!)
