Fabregas is in for missing a penalty to go with his assist. But Steve Davis Pelle and long don't get a mention despite all scoring game changing goals for their countries. :mcinnes:

What do you expect from the lazy, lying scumbag journos with the anti-saints agenda?

Not sure when it became a 'thing' but people / media referencing WhoScored as some sort of measure of good and bad is annoying. It particularly reaches peak ****ness during the transfer window when potential signings are statistically compared to existing players at the club and / or other transfer targets.

The WhoScored player ratings are absolutely laughable. Defenders end up with high ratings for scoring one off their arse from a corner despite having an absolute stinker at the other end. Vincent Kompany somehow ended up with really high ratings last season despite everyone seeing with their eyes that he was awful for most of the season.

I only find it annoying when they use the figures to compare players in different positions, or use non-comparable stats or pure figures where there's proportionality required. For example when they show "Appearances" and they vary greatly yet all the other figures are pure numbers which should cross-reference the number of opportunities to have done that based on the appearances. Basically the kind of thing saying "X scored 10 in 10 and Y scored 6 in 4 but X must be better because he scored 10 and Y scored 6". Unless you're comparing things like injury records or longevity, pure numbers of games played should only be a context in which to consider other stats.

I've not seen anyone reference the Whoscored "scores" as opposed to their actual statistics but that introduces an element of pre-calculated subjectivity which also shouldn't be part of an analysis.

I find the actual statistics useful on the rare occasions I meander over there to see if there's an evidence to support or contradict certain arguments. Stuff about "shots" and "shots taken per goal" are useful with a little wariness about their criteria, and heatmaps are useful. Not entirely convinced by the text-based commentaries they produce to indicate strengths and weaknesses, though that's probably because you don't get the overall rankings or even the categories considered when compared to others to validate the idea that Pelle is "good in the air" etc.
