Jason McCarthy to Wycombe - 1 month's loan

just one of many up-and-coming U21 lads who need some real game time. Think I read that Jason was a genuine " local boy " (that's if you count Totton as So'ton )

Admittedly, L2 isn't the top grade football, but he will come up against some veteran / experienced pro's ....and some bully boys . Will be good to see how he copes with it.

I've seen several League 2 matches this season, the matches I've seen have been pretty poor quality, but obviously pretty physical. Will be good to see how he handles himself with that side of the game, but shame it is so low down in the league tiers. He needs to stand out at that level and not fall into the sloppy careless habits that you so often see. I hear Ainsworth is pretty well regarded as a manager so I hope it works for McCarthy

Played the full 90 minutes last night against Newport last night. Lost 2-0, but still, good experience for the lad - and it will keep The9 happy.

The9 wins £600 if his home town team get relegated this season (and only loses the £50 he staked 12 months before if they don't), call it a really bloody obvious insurance bet. Having said that, I was very pleased with the result, an own goal by a Skate reject Bean which was going wide, and gigantic hoof from the keeper flicked on for the second (which went through the right back position, is that where McCarthy was playing?).

John Sheridan being new manager is having an impact, but possibly not as much as the Welsh young player of the year they have on loan, or his Cardiff City U21 colleague who is playing centre-back. If they stay up I'll be delighted, I have also just bought shares in their Fans' Trust so I'm a part owner. :)

i watched the highlights, trying to work out if he made the mistake for Newport's 2nd goal, but don't know if he was playing at centre back.

Aaron Pierre was dropped to the bench as a result of missing the team`s pre-match meeting, so Sido Jombati was at centre-back alongside home debutant Jason McCarthy. Fit again Michael Harriman slotted in at right-back, despite having a huge impact in midfield as a substitute against Stevenage at the weekend.

Probably wasn't him at fault then. He was wearing #22: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/34512986

Got to make an impression in this sort of loan really. Be interesting to see how he does and if he actually starts.

It's a pretty difficult thing to make an impression as a defender if everything around you is a mess - you might try and work harder and chase things down and end up getting yourself out of position and then you're no better off than if you keep your position and everyone else screws up around you.

Wycombe fan here, just wanted to let you all know that McCarthy has been very impressive for us, just a shame that he arrived in the middle of a bad run but today's win and clean sheet will at least give him something to look back on in his time here. I can confirm that he has played all 90 minutes of every match so far during his loan period and I for one am hoping that we can extend his time here. Whilst the gulf between league two and the premiership is pretty big for a young lad he certainly has a great attitude, always encouraging the crowd and his team mates, he commands his third of the pitch very well.

The only downside so far is the fact that we now have no league game for three weeks due to FA Cup and international weekend, I hope that doesn't mean his time with us has come to and end but if it has, thanks for loaning us such a brilliant and influential player :-)

Thanks for that. Good to hear he's had a good spell with you. If his spell went as well as you say I wouldn't be surprised if he went back out on loan, it's all good experience for the lad and will certainly benefit his development more than plaing U21 games with us.

Cheers pal.

Has he been playing centre back or right back? I think he's better at centre back.

You are certainly right about his attitude. He is an obvious leader and was captain of our U21s. Even if he doesn't make it at Saints he should have a good solid career.

I think Jason will be an important player at whatever club he ends up at - he is influential and a good organiser. Reminds me of Fonte in a way.

Watched him against Yeovil. Played at RB, kept the opposition winger quiet for the most part despite him being nippy. Obviously not up against the most confident team in the world, but he looked solid. Definitely will be more of a CB in coming years though, in my opinion.

I hope so. Getting a youngster through the ranks to become a good, regular CB has been one of the hardest challenges for the Academy since its inception.

Yes..... but seem to think he's played in both positions for U21's in the past....or ?

it's really not so unusual for players to find a place in another position is it ?

Calum Chambers found it difficult to get a regular start (as a midfielder) in our U21 side, but a freak injury to Clyne, gave him his chance at RB....and the rest is history.

Yes he started here at CB but our RB is back home in Portugal on family leave so he has been playing at RB to cover but we Wycombe fans believe that when our RB returns, Jason should be in the starting 11 at CB replacing one of the current two there. He is an unbelievably good player and you guys have got a real starlet in your ranks.

He gave an interview recently where he stated he would like to stay here for the remainder of the season and our manager GA has also publicly said that he wants him to stay so i wouldn't be surprised if it turns into a season long loan.

Maybe better if he does stay out the season. There's still a lot of distance between L2 and the Prem. but the " game time" experience will be a greater benefit in the long run.

IF ... Coco Martina's input on Saturday wasn't just a flash in the pan, then we may have solved the RB problem....(as long as fans don't expect a goal every game).

Or alternatively, the right back "problem" never existed.

I don't think that Cedric is so bad, (he was improving slowly).....but a lot on this board didn't agree. Hopefully he'll be back in training soon, but if we rule out further

chaos ..and Marina can DAJFU ..and with Jack Stephens back (?) ....perhaps " problem" is the wrong word .

Well we still couldn't beat them!

In some ways that was one of the results that had me worried the most! - We looked so frail defensively in that match.

Back on topic - Really pleased for McCarthy. After seeing Stephens & Gallagher return after not featuring for their clubs, it's been a great experience for him so far - playing lots of games, different positions (including in goal) and even getting on the score-sheet. Happy to see the deal extended. Good luck to him today.

He's been their best player so far this season. Wycombe fans are raving about him!

He has a lot of the intangibles you can't coach - determination, leadership, desire etc. Just need to see what his quality is like. He likes to defend and will have a career in football - it's his level of quality that will determine in what league.

Too true, partly why we are heading for a relegation scrap, because we couldn't beat a team that is already resigned to being in the Championship last season.

But we beat Arsenal 4-0, so partly why we are in fact, in the mix, for the title race/top 6 finish because we beat a team who are currently in first place.

It's stupid to isolate one result and use it to show we're 'heading towards a relegation scrap'

In fact he is having a great game, tackling, stopping crosses, tracking his man and always keeping the ball whilst getting forward and offering a dangerous outlet. Not far off deserving a run in the team..... Under a poch style manager anyway.

Think he will ultimately be a CB. Not PL ready now but hopefully will get a go in L1 once he leaves Wycombe.

Best attribute seems to be his attitude.
