Saint Fan CaM Posted 27 September, 2015 Share Posted 27 September, 2015 Just need to realise that the BBC do not recognise Southampton as a top 10+ Premiership team and that unless we're playing one of the 'big clubs' we will not feature. It's the law. Hm. You say that as if "top-10" has any sort of regularity or status. It doesn't. It means nothing. West Brom managed to finish something like 11th, 10th and 8th in three consecutive seasons recently. Would we think of them as a 'top-10' team? Would we have considered them to have a status above the likes of Stoke, Norwich, West Ham, Leicester or ourselves? The reality is that there's the big 6, then there's Everton, and then there's the rest of the league who are all much of a muchness. We don't merit any more attention than any other club in the league I'm afraid.

Another weekend of uniformly abject defending as well! I will happily take the goals, but it is pretty obvious why our top sides won't do well in Europe

angelman Posted 27 September, 2015 Share Posted 27 September, 2015 MotD is a poor show. Usually always features only the top clubs in the main slots, which given that they do not have the commercial pressure of other broadcasters, should allow them to do a much better job of giving air time to clubs that don't usually get it. This is from last season - http://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/complete-match-day-running-orders-9310522 - where is shows Swansea on last the most. I find that a bit odd as they did damn well last season. As I say, no commercial pressure, so BBC should make a stance and have a policy of giving more air time to smaller clubs, or at least one per programme. Running order last night was pathetic (biggest club only listed) 1. Arsenal 2. Man City 3. Chelsea 4. Liverpool 5. Man Utd 6. West Ham 7. Saints (no offence meant to Swans) 8. Stoke Bit like Sky and BT concentrating on those teams as well (but for COMMERCIAL reasons).
The9 Posted 27 September, 2015 Share Posted 27 September, 2015 I would say MotD is fantastic. Except for the bits between the matches. Also, makes sense for the BBC to try to achieve the largest audience share, which is achieved by putting the most popular clubs on earliest. Also, Swansea are bloody dull to watch, as they have spent most of most matches passing the ball around in midfield for the sake of it, so fewer highlights in the first place and much more likely to get shunted to the end. Kinda like us 2 seasons ago without the excitement of the pressing and attacking swarm.
DuncanRG Posted 27 September, 2015 Share Posted 27 September, 2015 I'll never understand why people get upset about this. We all want to see our team discussed but the big clubs and relegation fighters are the most interesting to the most people. I'd certainly rather watch City or Arsenal than West Brom. We'd all be bored if West Ham or other clubs similar to us were artificially pushed up the running order.
angelman Posted 27 September, 2015 Share Posted 27 September, 2015 Also, makes sense for the BBC to try to achieve the largest audience share, which is achieved by putting the most popular clubs on earliest. Why? They do not rely on advertising and do not have rights to sell abroad, so makes no sense what so ever to achieve the largest audience share. Or rather, financially, it makes no difference whether they get a large audience or not.

Or rather, financially, it makes no difference whether they get a large audience or not. Given that they pay a significant amount for the highlights they likely have their own internal pressures to secure as big of a viewership as possible. As otherwise they wouldn't want joe public challenging them as to why they are spending millions on a show that is only watched by whatever hundred thousand at 10.30 on a Saturday night. I've found that their analysis has got better the last few seasons after they have got rid of the old guard, even if occasionally some of the guest analysts are absolute turd. As for "put the big teams on last", I'm fairly sure the kind of plastics who support those teams would just tune in later. Though there is a question whether this is a moot point anyway, so many people watch on timeshift now anyway, even on the occasions when I watch it on Saturday nights (which is usually when Saints are home if I've not stayed out) I don't watch it live, that way I can ffwd the talking. Mowgli Posted 27 September, 2015 Share Posted 27 September, 2015 I thought they would at least debate the penalty. The commentator suggested it was for the tackle whilst those around me at the ground all thought it was hand ball. Not sure he really made contact with the player and the hand to ball was as much a ball to hand. Given that, and that it was not a goalscoring opportunity, really not sure why he was booked. The penalty was for Fonte's lunge which Neil Taylor leapt over and then fell on his face, I'm 20 rows back in the Northam and it was right in front of me. He didn't touch him but caused him to fall over with his reckless lunge (which btw is also why Targett's foul at West Brom was also a penalty). What was there to debate? I was pleased he gave it seeing as Eder had already buried the loose ball.

Yesterday every match except Man U had both teams scoring and all except Man U saw more than 2 goals. However, that also put them top, so a little more newsworthy than normal.
