Koeman 'settled' at Saints

I thought their family mostly still lives in the Netherlands and just visits?

IMO he will do his contract and then move on, which is probably the best outcome for all. Hopefully it will end well unlike other Manager departures. Can see it being similar as to when he left Feyenoord.

The problem with this is that when a Manager or a player head into the final year of their deal it leads to a lot of speculation and it definitely has an impact on them and their form. It's not good for anyone. I'd like to see Saints and Koeman agree to a 1 year extension like Man City and Pellegrini did - it eliminates speculation and an agreement can be made internally about him moving on.

I know what you mean, but if everyone knows he is still leaving at the end of that season then it won't stop the speculation.

I guess he will want something to move too, and that would obviously also need to align anyway so he may stay an extra year but he seems to always mention his contract and did the exact same thing with Feyenoord.

That just sounds like a strategy to appease the press. I'd rather he told them that he's just not answering the question.

Exactly this. The speculation is already happening and he has nigh on two years left. Answer it once and be done with it (I.e. he can tell journos to refer his answers from last week (that is if it isn't the very same journos asking the very same question...which it probably would be...in which case he should behave a little surly :p).

It won't be good with Koeman going into his final year of his contract and there being uncertainty around what is happening. It's very distracting. We'll be linked with new Managers, he'll be linked with new jobs - the whole thing is a mess. Strachan left when it was leaked he was going to leave and look at the mess that happened then.

The Pellegrini thing is very relevant. Man City may want a better Manager but for them having their Manager go into the final season of his deal is a distraction so they gave him a years extension and all of a sudden the stuff in the press about his future has greatly decreased (their start to the season will help too).

Koeman seems like a reasonable guy. If he decides that he doesn't want to stay I would expect him to tell the club early on and the club will then look at alternatives. It has happened to us and every other club on a regular basis and although it isn't ideal, it is football and we will cope.

Aren't people over-thinking this a bit?

Mostly managers are either a) sacked (cos the team's doing poorly) or b) leave you in the lurch for a mega-money/spiritual-home type walk-out.

I'm quite happy with c) we contract a manger who stays for three seasons, he shakes hands and walks away at the end of the contract, hopefully having left us in better shape than when he started (and we get fully 12 months to plan the succession).

Agree. Plus also the board have 2 years to identify the next man to continue the excellent work of Pardew, Adkins, Pochettino and eventually Koeman.

Yes, i think that too. I just hope we don't treat him like a player and tell him to sign a new contract a year before expiry and then tell him to moggy off for not committing. He is being honourable and will see out his contract. Let us let him do that.

He will sign a 1 year extension unless there are daft sales next summer.

He will then see out contract and preprae for the dutch job of euro 2020.

That will make him the longest serving manager at Saints since chris nicholl in the late 80s.

So they've already given up on the WC in '18, doubt it myself, they'll want someone to take care of that before they think about 2020. Hiddink and Blind have been serial disasters, if they don't qualify for next years Euro they'll do something about it soon enough, de Boer perhaps..

And he might stay an extra year so as to take the Dutch job after the next world cup.

Ok so you said it first on this thread.
