Yes, the plan was Clyne + young RB. As it transpired, Clyne left, and we weren't prepared (/other targets weren't feasible at the time) to rush through the process of adding another 'expensive' RB (Soares having been on the radar for a while)...hence the stop-gap Martina.

P.S I'm assuming you meant Soares/young RB wouldn't have been first choice.

Yes, I did mean Soares not being considered to be first choice. Don't agree that there was no time or that a stop gap was needed. We had all of the transfer window.

I think some of the replies to this thread seem to be juding as to whether or not 2 games in is too difficult to judge how VVD(who everyone or at least alot on this forum were saying get him on the bus),ok 2 games might seen a tad harsh but how would this forum be if we would have just signed Martial and hes done what hes done so far at Man Utd?.........somewhat differently id have thought.

I'm not stating my opinion - the club didn't buy another long-term RB, and their argument behind that would be that they didn't have the time they require/targets weren't available. I.e. The club don't tend to purchase players who haven't been on their radar for a while. Clyne leaving didn't alter that philosophy, so Martina on a 2 year deal until next summer was their temp solution.

Of course he is going to get a lot of headlines because he has just come in and scored 3 goals (but hasn't done much else). It is a bit early to call him the next Messi just as it is a bit early to write off VVD.

The thing is, Saints "looking good" is mostly just stopping things happening before they do. And occasionally scoring. We occasionally scored twice, it was just the other bit where a bad official's decision, a terrible defensive decision and basically a lucky rebound counted as goals.

As I mentioned, there are very fine margins between the 40-pass comfortable containment and the key-pass-later conceding a goal.

Except of course when we're playing a side with no confidence and from a lower league... ;)

I wasnt writing off VVD just wondering what all the hype was about, and yes 2 games in is very harsh to say what i started with,but..........

He made the Dutch national squad for the next two games today. Danny Blind eliminated Rick Karsdorp, Luciano Narsingh, Joël Veltman and Kenneth Vermeer today. Bruno Martins Indi and Gregory van der Wiel were not even part of the pre-selection:

GK: Jasper Cillessen (Ajax), Tim Krul (Newcastle United), Jeroen Zoet (PSV)

DF: Jeffrey Bruma (PSV), Virgil van Dijk (Southampton), Daryl Janmaat (Newcastle United), Terence Kongolo (Feyenoord), Karim Rekik (Olympique Marseille), Jairo Riedewald (Ajax), Kenny Tete (Ajax)

MF: Ibrahim Afellay (Stoke City), Vurnon Anita (Newcastle United), Daley Blind (Manchester United), Davy Klaassen (Ajax), Wesley Sneijder (Galatasaray), Georginio Wijnaldum (Newcastle United)

FW: Memphis Depay (Manchester United), Bas Dost (VfL Wolfsburg), Anwar El Ghazi (Ajax), Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (Schalke 04), Jeremain Lens (Sunderland), Robin van Persie (Fenerbahçe), Quincy Promes (Spartak Moskou)

Poor Dutch squad, no wonder they're failing. Do they also bang on about lack of technical ability and slag off all their youngsters in the Netherlands? Or are they a bit more rational about the fact sometimes you just get better crops of players than other times? I mean Belgium have a particularly strong group now, but then there's always a few smaller nations where that happens. Bulgaria, Ghana, Turkey and Sweden have in the past and are now ****.

Jeez if you think that is a poor dutch squad then ignore the latest England offering.

The problem with the dutch squad is the previous and current manager.

There aren't many in that Dutch squad that would get in the England team. And only a handful would get in our squad in my opinion.

At least 10 I would reckon would be good additions to our squad. A few that I don't know much about. Most of that 10 are as good if not better than England have right now.

Dele Alli (Tottenham Hotspur), Ross Barkley (Everton), Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Adam Lallana (Liverpool), James Milner (Liverpool), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Jonjo Shelvey (Swansea City), Raheem Sterling (Manchester City)

Forwards:

Danny Ings (Liverpool), Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Jamie Vardy (Leicester City), Theo Walcott (Arsenal)

GK: Jasper Cillessen (Ajax), Tim Krul (Newcastle United), Jeroen Zoet (PSV)

DF: Jeffrey Bruma (PSV), Virgil van Dijk (Southampton), Daryl Janmaat (Newcastle United), Terence Kongolo (Feyenoord), Karim Rekik (Olympique Marseille), Jairo Riedewald (Ajax), Kenny Tete (Ajax)

I know both squads likely have absentees through injury but looking at it I just can't see what Dutch players would get in our team, and who beyond Janmaat, Blind, Wijnaldum, RvP and maybe Depay would get in our squad.

I'd take the following ontop of your suggested ones:

Bas Dost over Vardy

Virgil over Phil Jones

Cillesen over Heaton

Rough translation of Virgil's quotes:

"In five games with Southampton I've learned more than in years before, so I'm certainly progressing as a football player. But the adjustment hasn't been easy. The pace of the game is much faster in England than it was in Scotland. The midfield sometimes seems like a pinball machine, that took some time to get used to. But it's going well, especially with the 3-1 victory at Chelsea in mind. I'm full of confidence. The timing for these international games is excellent for me. I want to take the form of Southampton with me to the national team. I don't know if my transfer to Southampton played a big part in my selection for the national team, but I am active at a higher level now, so people will watch me differently. In any case I'm happy I'm here and I'm going to try my very best to impress so I can get some actual time in the games. The games against Kazachstan and the Czech Republic will be tough. We have to win, but then still we depend on Turkey's results. It's too bad we can't decide it ourselves, but that's the way it is. We have to hope the Turks lose, because everyone at the Dutch team really wants to go to the EC. That's alo my big goal personally."

Excellent. happy and improving. I hope Holland make it through. ECs aren't the same without them.

I don't know yet how good he is, but he certainly looks good enough to have kept Brendan Rodgers in work for a while longer had he been a bit sharper in the transfer window.

How come we keep digging up gems that other clubs miss?

Or do we work with players on strengths and weaknesses better than other clubs do?

Either way it works for me.

Even better than Killer ?

I think Virgil has a more complete game than Svensson. Don't get me wrong, Killer was an exceptional defender but I think Virgil offers a lot more on the ball, going forward, aswell as being able to defend well.

VVD looks like a class act to me, based on his swansea performance. I worked up in glasgow this week and, without exception, both rangers and celtic fans were saying how good he is.

I know Celtic were reluctant to let him go, but coming to a Prem. side (even one that isn't top four)....is surely a no-brainer?

Now VvD has said that he's learned a lot (at Saints ).......even in the last few weeks ........

Hello, first post! I've had an ST since 2002 and Virgil for me is a more complete player than Toby and Killer - I know its early days and he is playing in a better team than Svensson but he has no weaknesses and will only get better the longer he has to settle. I was thinking during the Swansea game if only we had managed to get both TA + VvD, would be the perfect CB pairing. A clean sheet against Leicester and I am sure he will silence his doubters on here. :)

I would dispute that too, seeing as he played less than 20 games.

He played plenty enough to form an opinion. Yes killer has longevity over him but if we are talking about their peaks for us, then Toby's was higher than killers as was Lovrens IMO.
