Van Dijk

Dont see what all the fuss was about getting him signed as quick as possible.Scotish football is very weak as we all know and against stronger opposition he was found wanting ,luckily didnt see red for the foul on Martial, caught out of possition for that one but from what ive seen nah but time might tell, he may well have a cracking season only to be sold at a later stage prob next season ,along with Wanyama and Mane so what do i know...!

Yoshida made errors today that cost us the match, not van Dijk, but no thread to slate him.

because he is not a new, most expensive defender in our history, type of signing

I thought VvD was alright today.......but obvious why he will have far more focus on him

Saints played well for the first half an hour against Manure but overall our defence was really poor - especially Yoshida, who really needs to be replaced as he makes far too many costly errors and isn't up to Premier league standard.

I think once Virgil has a run of games under his belt, he will become stronger and used to the higher tempo and then his true ability will be seen and we will soon have Bertrand back, who will definitely help to organise the back line. We'll get better as the season progresses.

Up the Saints!

Whats wrong with Soares ?

I watched some of the coverage last night when I got back, Koeman said he picked Yoshida for his defensive abilities as Cedric offers more going forward.

I have left the facepalm off out of respect to Koeman. :/

VVD made two poor decisions in the first half not letting the ball run out for a GK, and then heading out weekly soon after; got turned far too easily for the first goal; and before he got booked tried to be took clever. Then gets cramp. Not seen that in a Saints player for ages, embarrassing.

Al in all yesterday he will want to forget, got pulled out of position far too easily too many times. Things can only get better!

I thought Caulker has looked best CB alongside JF so far.

Was Soares bought when we were still expecting Clyne to stay or am I imagining that?

The club claimed Clyne decided to leave when we brought Soares in but I don't believe it to be anything other than arse covering after they publicly stated they were hopeful on Clyne signing a new deal and then he did what any sane person would do and join the bigger club for more money.

Surely the facepalm would be Saints signing a defender who can't defend ?

....wasn't that a replay of last season's game ....when Fonte was the culprit ?......No thread about how bad Fonte was then, either........:?:

fonte got plenty of crticism last season for that game, as did forster for being glued to his line

as did adkins the first season up for throwing the game awya by taking off our best players

got turned far too easily for the first goal

Not his fault at all. Martial was about 8 yards out. If VVD (or anyone else in his position) doesn't throw himself in to try and block the shot then Martial just belts it in with his left foot rather than having to turn onto his right.

It was well-taken to be fair. One of those situations where the striker can actually force the defender to commit.

It looks bad on the defender but trust me, VVD or anyone else in his position couldn't possibly have done otherwise.

Do you have another club you truly support?

Or do you just moan moan and moan about saints?

Didn't realise that's what "supporting" a club meant!

We support our chosen club in many different ways . Some are critical of some things , others are not .

When things are going poorly , many supporters vent their frustration at other supporters . While this is pointless and idiotic it obviously seems to help .

I reserve the right to question our talent scouts who choose players who are unable to play the position they specialize in .

I'm glad I could help you vent your frustrations ?

Yes I agree. The whole defence looks poor, especially in the second half when we played far too deep. As for Yoshida - dear oh dear!

The problem with Yoshia is that he's generally reliable but every now and then he has the habit of making a monumental fc*uk up which lives in the memory.....Sunday's back pass being about the worst I've ever seen from him.

He doesn't. He also generally only has issues when he is played out of position, especially at RB (rather than LB). In any case, if you think Yoshida's howler on Sunday cost us the game then you are very much mistaken, it just compounded what was an appalling performance by the whole team including Ronald.

Yoshida has had an excellent season in his proper place. He was playing out of position on sunday and anyway the whole team is obsessed with passing backwards it was only a matter of time before it cost us. By the way Fonte made exactly the same mistake from exactly the same spot on the field in exactly the same match last year, and he ended up 'Player of the Season'

Many on here thought Yoshida was Most Improved Player last year too. I'm not saying I agree (I haven't given it any thought), but he obviously did something right to give some that impression. One erroneous pass and he's been cast out

Yoshida's mistake certainly contributed to us losing the game, doesn't make him a bad player. And the overall performance certainly wasn't "appalling".

Yes, for some reason after half an hour it became a case of pass it back whenever possible. It was always going to lead to trouble but Maya's mistake was an appalling lack of concentration.

Disagree with all of this. I see virtually all of our matches and in my opinion Yoshida is error prone, even when at CB. His howler on Sunday changed everything. Confidence visibly drained and the defence sat deeper and deeper ceding space for the likes of Rooney, Mata and Schweinstieger (sic. can't be arsed to look it up). It was not an appalling performance by the whole team. For the majority of the first half they all played very well and were well on top. Pelle in particular had a fine game.

It is not the first time Yoshida has played at full back and to be fair he has made howlers at CH too. I will eat my cat if he gets player of the season.

Nothing like giving him time to adapt from Scottish Prem to English Prem then !!

Indeed. Two matches played and his game has been forensically scrutinised and he has been judged as rubbish. Sunday's game was bizarre. Three shots on target and three goals. If we were that clinical we would be top of the league. The defence sat back too deeply but VVD was the only one trying to get them forward as far as I could see. Early days but he looks like he will be a quality signing for us.

This is what I noticed most about him, good to see he's so confident already

Yoshi has a great attitude and is fine as a no4 CH on the bench but as you say, he is error prone and unfortunately most of his errors lead to goals against. I also agree that it was not an appalling performance, the stats show that we had enough of the game to have won it. For a long period we did sit too deeply

but for the first 30 mins we were superb and we also finished very well. On another day we would have got a draw at least.
