West Brom Build Up Thread

Was he responsible for all the goals scored and conceded then? if not I can't see what bearing that stat has on anything.

Schneiderlin was on the pitch for +0.93 goals PER GAME. Yoshida 0. You carry on thinking there's no correlation, but it's pretty obvious that when all our good players play we do well, and when crap ones play we don't.

They are unwarranted because it wasn't Matty's decision to be thrown in at the deep end because of Bertrand's injury and Matty doesnt select himself for these games does he?

The fact is he's young and not really ready for the prem yet. This doesn't make him rubbish and certainly doesnt mean he won't be a solid prem left back in years to come?

MT is a die hard Saints fan as are his family. As a nipper he'd be out in his garden every single night practicing. We should be proud that we have a player who actually genuinely loves the club. Just think how good he'll be in a few years with all of the prem game time he's getting. Wouldnt get that at any other club and that's why we're the best. Just give him a chance and watch him grow into a v decent player. Its not always about being amazing straight away.

Well said. I am amazed and more than a little disturbed by the criticism of one of our own by so-called fans on this board. Incredible that the same people who sing "One Ronald Koeman" at games are so vitriolic towards one of the players picked by the very man they continue to praise.

hm. I think that's far too defensive for playing against a tony pulis side. I say romeu, alongside either JWP or Davis. But then replace your Davis with Juanmi (not sure why you didn't include him - is he away...?) and you're set. I would even consider giving Long a start. With the absence of Mane we desperately need both pace and creativity. Between Juanmi and Long we should be able to provide that. But I'd stick with Pelle as you suggest for sake of impact: I think Long can have a real impact coming on as a 60/70 minute sub.

So mine is:

-------Stekelenburg------------

Cedric Fonte Van Dijk Targett

-------------Romeu-------------

-------JWP/Davis----Juanmi

Rodriguez-----Pelle-------Tadic

I know it looks light in midfield. But JWP/Davis are playing further back than I've shown.

Juanmi over Martina on the bench, now I've remembered he exists. :) I don't think we'll start Juanmi in an away game first. As for JWP/Davis further back, we're going to have to do more than have one win at home against a promoted side with 10 men before I think that's a viable option away from home.

We'll keep picking defensive sides until it's clearly not working any more. I think with our first choice players (especially Bertrand) we'll be a lot more solid than we have been, though Van Dijk/Romeu/Clasie's level will have a lot of effect on where we actually end up.

Just because a 22 year old recent signing hasn't played much in the opening 4 league games of a season doesn't mean you should jump to the conclusion that Koeman doesn't think he is a good player. He is behind Mane, Tadic, Rodriguez and Long in the pecking order and has time on his side to make an impression.

As I've mentioned before, it doesn't make sense to pick another new player in a position we don't have to, at a time when we're already picking a lot of new players due to injury or player sales. Juanmi's time will come.

To be fair I probably played football every day from the age of about 6 until I was 15 too, that's hardly a sign of dedication.

I'm sure he's still got a chance of turning into a solid Prem player, but he's suffering in comparison with Bertrand at the moment and some people expect him to be as good as Bridge or Shaw just because he's come through the same system for some reason.

I get the impression the West Brom media team are getting annoyed with the press...

Have to say that is excellent quality video - I mean visually, not the dire content. Not sure our video quality is as good? Just imagine live streams with that resolution and no jitter :-)

Lies, damn lies and statistics. It is easy to select isolated figures that agree with your view. It does not mean that those numbers in any way support your argument.

Saved me some typing...

Going by his username and immaturity of his posts, I would suggest he's not reached 19 yet

I think all positive noises from Koeman around Wanyama, plus Mane's late return and Yoshida's long haul, means we'll go with this:

-------Stekelenburg------------

Cedric Fonte Van Dijk Targett

-----Wanyama Romeu---------

Rodriguez --Davis-----Tadic--

------------Pelle----------------

Subs: GK, Martina, Caulker, Yoshida, Ward-Prowse, Long, Mane

That rotates a fair few of our longer-haul players who played international matches.

Assumptions are: Wanyama plays if fit; Van Dijk starts; We play not to concede away from home - but 4-2-3-1 provides that with 2 DMs so we don't need the back 5; We need an attacking front 4 but we are still away and Davis is the most defensive AM we have; Mane may be tired - so Rodriguez gives that attacking presence; Yoshida may be tired so Targett continues (though personally I'd play Yoshida at LB if he's ok).

Bit harsh on JWP especially as he scored for U21s midweek and must be flying. Might even start Long at his old club instead of Rodriguez but we don't start with Long often.

So Ward-Prowse for Romeu but otherwise as above. :)

Targett looked good whenever he played last season (one slip vs Liverpool aside). This season his two worst games have come at wing back, both in shocking team performances at Watford and in Denmark. I hardly see grounds to write him off (especially with the kind of vitriol on display here), given that he's still young and relatively inexperienced at this level. Recently we've been lucky enough to see Shaw, Chambers and Chamberlain seamlessly fit into the side as if they'd been there for years, whereas in the current squad we have Reed, Ward-Prowse and Targett, none of whom have nailed down first team places and excelled week on week.

Now this might seem a ridiculous notion, but I tend to think that just because our youth team players (seen as full of potential by the likes of Koeman and Hodgson) aren't immediately amongst our best performers in the first team that doesn't mean they can't be valuable players for us in the future. They might even have outright bad games now and again. Young academy players, Southampton supporters. They're what you say you want aren't they, but when Targett looked every bit a downgrade on our £12m first choice LB vs Watford the other week the reaction from 'supporters' behind me was shocking.

For what it's worth, I still think JWP will be a really excellent CM for us. He has so much technical ability and I think he'll get better and better at applying it in the PL. Targett also looks a great option at backup to me and could well make the place his own in 2 or 3 years.
