West Brom Build Up Thread

Going off topic here but I don't understand why we didn't go in for Nathan Dyer on loan, decent pace, scores the old goal ex saints.......

Saints would have had to buy him, they couldn't loan him as we have the max 2 domestic loans (Caulker & Stekelenburg). Plus we don't really have room for him, he wouldn't be a starter and we have a lot of attacking options on the bench. We haven't signed Long and Juanmi to not even make our bench.

That's the one. I think Kieran Richardson hit the bar as well.

That was he night welter out "Arry &Jim are red'n'white" for the whole second half. That's awkward!

Then there was the game with the snowballs in the car park and down the path where the old chap got his greenhouse bombed with snowballs.:lol::lol:

Nervous that Rickie and Berahino will tear us a new ass.

Seeing as one's not going to get time to do anything, and the other one probably won't get near the team because he's been trying to leave, this kind of sums up your paranoia.

Would agree with this. If Berahino plays, I'll be stunned. Likewise, coming round to the idea that Lambert, bless him, is no longer a Premier League player. There's an element of being f**ked up by Liverpool/Brendan, but I think we saw him at his peak and it makes me sad to see him play now.

He's still a decent player, don't think it's very fair to say he's now past it, he's more than capable to cause us some problems. Especially when he drops into midfield and has runners past him.

He still has quality (see his ball for the West Brom winner against Stoke for example) but his mobility is starting to disappear and as a consequence his ability to impose himself on a game.

Agree he was at his best when he was with us, but he was never particularly mobile. His technical ability is outstanding.

WBA are pretty average at best, but then we've lost to some absolute ****e this year, especially away. Again would take a draw to keep a bit of momentum going. Expect VVD to come straight in but other than that no changes to the Norwich team. Big Vic probably on the bench, although I'd prefer him in to Davis with JWP further forward. Just don't get how Davis keeps getting in when his form is so poor. Least JWP adds set pieces and suddenly our corners are vaguely dangerous.

Tadic/Pelle/Mane picks itself at the moment, unfortunately for Rodriguez and Juanmi.

He's an important cog to our team, we miss him when he doesn't play.

He works his socks off closing down and pressing the opposition usual he is pretty good at retaining possession and finding a pass. What lets him down is the more dynamic side of the game going forward plus literally no goal scoring ability.

Yup - agree. I like him though, he just needs 3 attacking players round him, and his lack of goalscoring ability is frustrating, but he is such a good link player between defence and attack.

If you watched him last night he was always the one breaking up the play , closing down fast and picking up the loose balls!

Yet he was there playing in many of our worst performances. It used to be true, he was underrated and did a solid job, but not anymore. Just seems to be a ready made excuse to keep him in and avoid any criticism, but he's been poor for a long time, poor decision making, woeful finisher, poor set pieces, no incisive passing in final third.

Couldn't agree more. Can't see how he will start when we get Wanama and Romeu paired up, And Clasie gets up Ms running.

Errrrrmmmmm because he is an attacking midfielder (just not a goal scoring AM) and the other three are Defensive midfielders I know Ronald likes it tight at the back but I don't think even he wants to play 3 holding/defensive midfielders. If Davis is dropped it will be to play another attacking midfielder, which we don't really have, so it's either JWP (possible) or Gaston (pretty unlikely). Alternatively Koeman plays another attacking player like Juanmi or Mane in the number 10 but the early games we did that in we were to open so Koeman may not want to do that again. Really as a squad we are short a good defensive AM so I can see Davis playing a lot this season due to a lack of a better option.....sorry about that.

Out of interest, how does an AM who doesn't score or create differ from a DM who doesn't score or create?

Ah yes, the classic football position.

Left/Centre defensive full-number 10

what you mean is just a box-to-box midfielder.....which koeman/reed clearly know we need as we were looking to get one on loan from abroad at the end of the window. didn't happen, but doesn't mean it's a travesty. We're flexible enough as a team with enough player variation that we can mess around with a system/formation and make it work.

Arsenal seem to do pretty well with absolutely zero midfielders who put in any kind of defensive duty or have any kind of 'presence' (i.e. are big) and who play further forward than coquelin. sanchez is probably the player of their front line who tracks back and puts in tackles from the front more than any other...which is pretty damning. We'll be fine.

Anyone who has seen Steven Davis trying to play as a DM could clearly see the difference I would say.

This is very true. But I think Steven Davis playing in the hole and getting criticised for not scoring enough whilst pressing and moving the ball on quickly and being key to our attacking is far preferable to Steven Davis playing theoretically alongside a DM and not defending enough and costing us goals, which is what happens when he plays deeper.

Box to box midfielder is one thing, but we are far more secure with 2 sitting DMs, it's just a question of when we feel safe enough that we shouldn't use them.

Or alternatively, Arsenal do really poorly for a club with their resources due to not being strong enough defensively at key points of the season.

No, granted. Of course I agree. and obviously we all know their constantly troubles for the best part of the last decade, but I suppose what I was saying is a successful football team isn't dependent on a specific formation; i.e. it's not like in the absence of a big number 8/10 means we'll be weak or vulnerable. There's plenty of options to tweak and play around, rather than putting so much pressure on needing cover in that one position.

Despite the fact that he's been playing well for WBA since signing...

He'll play. No better way to get up to speed than playing. Yoshi on the bench as backup.

I hope Ron tells him just to concentrate on defence to begin with. He won't be able to go steaming up field like he's used to, at least not till he's settled in properly.

I don't think its a guarantee that he or Wanyama start. We won our last game 3-0.

Agreed, I would not be surprised to see Virgil on the bench for WBA, and I'm not even sure Wanyama will be on the bench. I would expect Ronald will like to keep faith in the team that performed so well against Norwich, and will want Virgil and Jose to train more together first before he is put in to the firing line. It would be very harsh on Yoshida to drop him as well.
