West Brom Build Up Thread

You'd have thought so. Weirdest signing of the summer for me, he really doesn't look like much of a player.

Our plan A was to have Cedric as backup for Clyne and, I imagine, let him grow into the team when Clyne eventually left. When Clyne went this summer, and our first choice new right back became unavailable, we went for Cedric as the starting right back. A two-year contract for Martina suggests to me that he'll be used as a steady but unspectacular back-up - which is how he's performed so far - until McCarthy or another young lad is ready.

'Unspectacular' is being pretty generous. I was baffled about the fact he started ahead of Cedric in Denmark, he could hardly control a 10 yard pass and looked terrified every time the ball went near him. Ron must see something in him though as he's been getting some minutes, but it really doesn't look like a simple case of being rusty.

Either way, I'd say he's the most likely to find himself out of the squad as people return from injury. Yoshida can cover at RB if Cedric gets a knock.

I think you're doing him a disservice there, Martina's looked solid but unspectacular in all his competitive games so far. He's definitely back-up though.

Long was a poor signing in hindsight for that sort of money.

I bet if they had their time again they wouldn't have signed him.

In terms of the domestic transfer market and home grown players that fee doesn't look out of place. Championship strikers are being prices at £10m+ and you can get better value abroad. tbf to Long he has still given a good contribition.

Why couldn't we afford it?

You are asking the wrong people the only people at the club who know what we can and can't afford will be the owner and her inner circle.

It's easy for fans to look at tv money and players sales and think we made this much money so we should spend that much money but I doubt it's that simple in reality

I think we could have afforded more. You do realise this is a forum to discuss possibilities?

Of course it isn't. We have had a huge extra expenditure with the training facilities and there is the wage bill to be considered. The owners have made it clear that the club has to be self sustainable and books have to be balanced. It is easy to sit behind a computer screen and say spend more but we have been down that road before and it didn't go well. What has been our biggest spend? £15m on Osvaldo? That is put into perspective when you consider that we got £16m for Chambers. I have supported this club since 1966 and we have never been a club to spend a huge amount on players no matter who has been in control. Cant see it happening any time soon. What they will have to consider though is their spend on wages. We will never compete with the big boys but do need to compete with the likes of Newcastle and Stoke. The money we have spent on van Dijk and Clasie is a lot for us, we have brought in lots of new players this summer and have made around £3m net. I think we manage our transfers well for a club of our size.

Who has suggested we should spend a huge amount of players and have a repeat of signings similar to Osvaldo or Ramirez.

I cant be bothered to go through every last post but there has been some criticism about us seeking out "bargains" and not spending more on players.

So the only options are to spend exactly what we have spent or go out and spend mega money on Osvaldos. Nothing in-between, no grey areas. Thanks for the insight.

Odd .... thought I'd opened The WBA Build Up Thread, not some old washer woman nagging site :mcinnes:

Looking at travelling down from Lancs by train, but read so many different options at changing at New St, Snow Hill, Smethwich something or other.

Any top tips for best stations to get off and obviously any info on decent (real ale) boozers would help ;)

I'm not reading too much into Denmark as everyone's confidence was shot. Other than that I think he's been okay, but I'd also rather see Yoshida cover. Only problem is pace, which Martina has a little more of.

You need to get the Metro from Snow Hill to The Hawthorns. New Street is about 10 mins wall from Snow Hill if I remember. Easy. Google Maps is your friend.

You can get the train from Birmingham Moor St to The Hawthorns. Moor St is round the corner from New St so easiest option if changing there.

This is a very easy away day to do by train

As ever' date=' remember when making your travel plans after the game that the local police divert you on a 10min walk away from the stadium (and all the transport options) before you are free to make your own way.[/quote']

And through a slightly dodgy/unwelcoming council estate if you make a wrong turn....

Why this constant and frankly childish need to question and belittle people’s views? This is after all a forum to primarily express one’s views – if you don’t agree with or like them, then either just ignore them or simply express your own views in a sensible and mature way. God only knows how dull this world would be if we all had the same view on life!

BTW – this is not a specific response to your post alone, rather a general view I hold.

The Wellington and Old Joint Stock are close by each other and 5 minutes walk from Snow Hill station. The Old Contemptibles is adjacent Snow Hill station so a good one to finish up at. All have a good range of beers especially ales. The Wellington is probably the best for ale. I'm sorry to report that it smelled of wet farts when I was in there prior to the corresponding fixture last year. Since I visited all three and the other two had good air quality I'm satisfied it wasn't me or anyone I was with. Anyway, a small price to pay for the beer. I expect it's clear by now. The Old Joint Stock is a beautiful pub inside and outside.

Anyone here remember that horrendous, snowy, freezing 0-0 at WBA under Redknapp? Ugghhhh, horrible memories of that place, always.

Good balti/chicken place round there though, isn't there?

The night David Prutton somehow contrived to miss an open goal.

Any suggestions for parking near the ground ?

Have driven past the Hawthorns a few times off the Motorway whilst working in the area, and the only obvious thing of note is 'what a cesspit' .

Turn left at the big roundabout and there's plenty of street parking around by the Vine pub if you get there early enough. Can be a pain getting out after though.

I might try to park south of the ground this time because otherwise when you come out the away end you have to walk all the way around the ground to get back to the car which takes ages.

Just been on the ticketing website and it says they've sold out.

Good news they must've just sold out as they were still available at the end of last week. Decent support taking 2750 up there. Looking forward to this one should have a chance of getting something there hope all our players come back fit from international duty and they have an unsettled side with Berainho refusing to play.

Thanks for that, I'll be going via Snow Hill so will give the area the once over and check for wet fart smells first though!!

While looking on physioroom to see if Lambert is injured (he isn't) I noticed this about Ben Foster:

"Expected to be missing till October with an ACL injury the keeper plans on speeding up his recovery by cycling to France alongside Ian Wright and John Salako"

That sounds like something Alan Partridge would pitch to the BBC, would make a nice double bill beside "Youth Hostelling with Chris Eubank"
