It's a tad bonkers, isn't it? He makes a few u23 appearances and then nothing. You'd have thought VvD's recent suspension would have been the perfect opportunity to reintroduce him to the first team squad. Bit of an odd one, that's for sure.

When is his contract up? Maybe the club intend to just run it down and let him go on a free. Hard to imagine many bids for a player who hasn't really featured in his time here for whatever reasons and is injury prone.

Interesting. Should be back sooner than if he were playing.

I'd rather he was back in 3-4 weeks off the back of a good run of wins with his national team.

excellent that our record signing is injured again for a decent stretch?

Excellent news that he might be back for us sooner than otherwise might have been the case.

OK. 3-4 weeks injured, then he will need to be nursed back in with sub appearances and all that

assuming there is no bad reaction to his recovery

Ok, fair point. So, if it means he's back later than he might have been had he played in the tournament and stayed fit, then it's bad news. If the opposite transpires (e.g. the 3 - 4 weeks turns out to be an over estimate) then it's good news.

Is that what we call "Doing a Fonte?".

Also better than him playing a few more games and then getting a longer term injury later on in the tournament.

Not sure if that way of thinking makes me glass half full or glass half empty...!

He's missing the Semis so it's not good news, also we're in a terrible vain of form, we need our best players now.

But he wouldn't be playing anyway because he was at the AFCON... While there is a chance he may now be out for longer than anticipated, there's also a possibility he'll be back earlier. It's also a 'vein' of form.

Same thing happened to Mane two years ago and worked to our advantage

Its a well-trodden path to declare an injury before AFCON starts to avoid playing. Presumably he was "injured" during our last game (a knock or something). Assuming that the "injury" is not too serious he will be back available to us at least as soon as he would if he had played in the tournament (and potentially been injured). Would expect him to be available after 24 Jan when Morocco's third group game is completed, might be available for the LC SF 2nd leg, more likely Swansea.

Outstanding.

Even worse than Delgado and Gashton, at least when they came back crocked from international duty, they actually had played.

The winner for the post of day, again goes to .....

Still plugging on with that old favourite "Gashton" routine. Come on Alpine, you have had plenty of time to come up with a "comical" name for Boufal by now.

Try saying it the way that Bernard Matthews might. Mind you, he was talking about turkeys.

Boufal has had a minor operation on a knee injury ("inflamation") according to Puel during this afternoon's press conference. Should be back in a few weeks. "It's not a bad injury"

Just seen this on Twitter

Can't decide from Claude's comments whether he had an operation or whether there was a problem with how his knee operates. Trouble with Franglais. 3 weeks, strange that's the time roughly till Morocco's last group game.

Wish someone would help Claude out with the Transfer Mercator thing.

Poofal, surely?

It's a minor injury. Won't need to be nursed back as he can carry on training. Puel expects him to be playing again in 3 weeks

My first thought with Bouffants injury was that it was a faker to get him out of the AFCON... other teams seem to conveniently pull stunts like this. I guess 2-3 weeks would be a safe amount of time to ensure he didn't get called back again.

Just heard on the radio here in Ireland that he's out for at least a month. Don't know where they got that info from???

Very much doubt anyone could know that. Assume he'll have a scan tomorrow. Just hope it's not a broken metatarsal.

Too soon to say, surely.

I've got a feeling Manolo Gabbiadini is going to take over from Boufal as the star of this thread if we sign him. He's very frail, got weak ankles, suffers from 'muscle fatigue' and his injury record is awful. Also, on the rare occasions he's fit enough to play, he won't like the cold weather as he even has to wear tights for the bits of games he plays in the Italian winter.

Who knows why he wears tights for some games? Possibly the weather...

...Although Naples is about 1.5°C warmer than Southampton in winter, most of northern Italy - where I assume Napoli play away games - is significantly colder than most of the UK. Take Milan/Manchester as an example - where Milan is on average 3°C colder during the winter months (around 0°C). Add in that Italy's subcontinental climate is warmer than Britain's oceanic climate for the rest of the year, then those cold months appear to bite harder. If he is coming on as a sub for those away games then use of sports compression tights sounds like a sensible idea (particularly if he has a 'muscle fatigue' issue, whatever that may be).

[if it helps, just imagine the above being read by Carol Kirkwood]

Or, Manolo must just like wearing tights.

Rodrigues taken off at HT with an ankle injury

This puts more pressure on the squad with the games coming thick and fast and an important League game at Swansea on Tuesday

Might be why we're supposedly hurrying up after Gabbiadini? And linked with Mariano Diaz now too? Did Prowsey go off injured as well last night?
