CB Fry Posted 28 August, 2015 Share Posted 28 August, 2015 As my learned friend CB Fry would concur, we now appear to be entering a period of normality for clubs the size of Southampton. Some years we'll do better than 'normal' and some years we'll do worse than 'normal'. Normality. Move along. Nothing to see here... I concur. Sidney Fudpucker the 3rd Posted 28 August, 2015 Share Posted 28 August, 2015 Without a doubt. A wasted opportunity. Something needs to change as this currently feels very similar to 2004 after Strachan left. It's like the Rupert Lowe era all over again. All I can think is that all the talk from the board about playing regular European football was just a load of hot air. As I've said before. Clubs who make it into Europe don't sell off their best players and try and replace on the cheap. It's not a business model that works. We need to focus on staying up. That £10 I've got on RK not lasting the season at 50-1 looks like a very good bet.
CLOTH EARS Posted 28 August, 2015 Share Posted 28 August, 2015 You don't continually sell your best players and get better when it happens over the course of several years. It's impossible. Totally agree. You cannot keep getting away with selling your best players every season. When people within the club call us 'a showcase club' that to me sounds as if we are happy to be a stepping stone for players on their way to a big club, but losing a few every summer is dangerous!!! That philosophy will bite us in the arse and its now starting to happen. People within the club have gotten complacent after what happened last summer. Brave Sir Robin Posted 28 August, 2015 Share Posted 28 August, 2015 I think we've been spoilt by the last few years. Particularly last year. All the way through the 90's we always started the season poorly, but never really believed it'd end with relegation, then were jubilant when our defiance against the press who always referred to "struggling Southampton" was rewarded with narrowly beating the drop in the last few weeks. All I ask is that we stay in the premier league. Personally, I don't think it's going to be easy with this squad, but anything above 18th place and I'll be happy. Talk of Champions League in x years now just looks bonkers. We had our moment in the sun, we loved every moment, now it's back to reality. ...and Pompey are still far worse off by the way. alpine_saint Posted 28 August, 2015 Share Posted 28 August, 2015 ...and Pompey are still far worse off by the way. Oh, well, it only took ca. about 15 hours for that ridiculous sop to be brought out....
SaintBobby Posted 28 August, 2015 Share Posted 28 August, 2015 It's certainly been a very poor start to the season. Worries that we are going to be involved in a relegation battle have started to enter my mind.
Brave Sir Robin Posted 28 August, 2015 Share Posted 28 August, 2015 Oh, well, it only took ca. about 15 hours for that ridiculous sop to be brought out.... What's ridiculous about that? I'd far rather be at the bottom of the prem, but 5 points off 4th place Man U, than 6th in league 2, 6 points behind Leyton Orient! Surely nobody actually buys into the hype you hear from new signings? "This is a big club, lots of history, going places". The reality is Southampton are a small club with 2 trophies in living memory, but a grand tradition of punching above their weight, and staying in the premier league is doing just that. The other aspect of being a Saints fan that makes it so much fun is being in a position to lord it over our rivals. Sorry, but that's the DNA of the club. If you find it ridiculous, go and support Chelsea!
sotonist Posted 28 August, 2015 Share Posted 28 August, 2015 it's a new 5 year plan. i liked the last one from the start. not sure about this one. momentum seems to have been squandered. it will be tough to build it again.
trousers Posted 28 August, 2015 Share Posted 28 August, 2015 Here's a new super yacht to keep an eye out for in the Solent when the annual "Katharina looking to sell the club" rumour kicks in this season... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-3212897/The-superyacht-masts-taller-BIG-BEN-sails-size-football-field-Russian-billionaire-designs-luxury-vessel-set-begin-sea-trials-later-year.html
Chez Posted 28 August, 2015 Share Posted 28 August, 2015 Agree. Far too much negativity around. Larger squad should benefit us in both domestic cup competitions. Somebody's got to win them, why not Saints. well if we are relying the new `squad' players brought in to help guide is into domestic cup finals this season, then my advice would be to keep your powder dry on any investment in a Club Wembley ticket.
