Maybe we could start by playing him as a striker in the U21 after all it's a development squad so develop. He might find out how to score which might light a spark. Passing sideways sure as hell won't.

He's more focussed on his media interviews to be fair. He talks a great game.

Or perhaps he thinks a good cross is all you need to be a pro footballer. Having said that when was the last time he got an assist? Can't remember.

A regular spell at good League 1 or 2 club is what he needs, but to be starting for a Prem side at his current level is madness.

One week ago, against FC Midtjylland. Get that memory tested, perhaps ;)

I just don't know what this kid is supposed to be good at. He had a spell of us all thinking he curled in a nice free kick, but we never actually scored from them!

Makes the tackle to set up the goal today.

He is young. Holds his own in the Premiership and has potential. Sure he does not have height, power and pace but I think folk compare him to Morgan. He is not Morgan but he is certainly someone who makes our squad better than some of the journeymen dross around. If we support him he has better chance of succeeding than if we slate him for not being "an improvement" on what is is pretty good premier team....

He does very well today IMO. He takes a lot of responsibility, and distributes the balls great.

Yes, been critical of him but he's showing the aggression and speed of thought needed to be a good CM in the prem. keep it up.

Thought it was arguably his best game in a saints shirt. Bit sloppy at first but thought he controlled the gave well in the second.

JWP played very well today, partnering the outstanding Romeu very well in CM, getting forward occasionally, helping set up a goal with a determined tackle and good pass, and putting in some excellent dead ball plays. Why does he need defending?

Posted

I have consistently said that he is a better player in a deeper lying roll where he can use the full extent of his passing. We saw that again today. As his physicality and reading of the game improve he will become the player we all hope to see him become.

We will never again see Steven Davis in that role.

He played okay but people getting carried away he had loads of space. I think that's his best position but I don't think he's the answer.

That's because you're asking the wrong question.

Thought he did very well. Why is everyone such a **** about him? Is it the Pompey thing?

Don't be silly. I've judged him on the 100 games or so I've seen him play.

The only place he's going to make it is as a defensive midfielder . In that respect he did well today , tactically good and played some good passes . Needs to do it when we're up against it to convince me , but he didn' t look like a little boy lost today .

Don't get the set piece specialist gig though . Is he the only free kick expert on the premiership ( and all sides have them nowadays ) that doesn't actually score. Interesting comments from stan Collymore in the week , he claims too many modern players are more worried about taking set pieces like Beckham or Ronaldo that they don't get the basic right , the basic being " put it in a dangerous area " . JWP is like that , looks good lining up his corners and free kicks , but how many have an end result?

I no longer buy the "young" defence. All good players when they are young show flashes of brilliance. You know they will be a good player. .

How did Rickie Lambert look at 20?

Ive been out today but caught the end of the radio commentary on Talk sport and they were raving about JWP's performance today, saying that him and Jrod were the stand-out players. Yes, I know its Talksport but....

Care to say that a third time?

If I'm not mistaken, at the same age as JWP is now, Morgan Schneiderlin was struggling to get into the team ahead of Paul Wotton... Let's give him a bit of credit.

Don't strain yourself

Thats the best he has played for us because he added aggression and tenacity to his technical ability.

That sets the standard and shouldn't be a one off.

That seems fair enough. However, he'll have far tougher tests ahead in the deeper role than Norwich offered today.

Thought he played well today, made some good defensive plays also.

If he could just work out how to score from the deadballs I'd be a very happy chap.

Posted

Best game I've seen from him today. Moved the ball quickly and decisively. As others have said he did have a lot of space to do his thing but encouraging performance. Something to build on.

Posted

I think he played his best position today. Too many times he's been asked to be the advancing attacking midfield player. He's better off sitting back and spraying the ball around the pitch.

You are mistaken. 5 years ago Wotton went to Yeovil on loan.

But fair play, JWP was excellent today, nobody can say otherwise. Needs to do it more often, but credit where its due.

He looked good, was running that midfield for most of the afternoon. Excellent passer of the ball and added a bit of tenacity to his game. He'll get lots of harder games, but this is more like it - this is why people get a tad frustrated with him, as he has it in his locker, we don't see it often enough.

And yet professional managers who see him in training day in day out have a different opinion. Go figure.

I partly agree with this, his does tend to put too much into his free kicks when his shooting but his corners and crosses are some of the best I've seen and we really notice that when his not on the pitch.

Funny that cos I could have sworn he usually isn't in the starting eleven. But he played well today.

Had a good game today and in a way, you can see why he can impress managers in training so often.

Given time and space he can spray the ball around very nicely indeed, and its hard to deny the boy has talent. Trouble is that in an 11 vs 11 match against tougher opponents his massive repertoire of weaknesses quickly comes to light.

Does deserve credit for today's win though.

Posted

He is not noted for his tackling but he did really well to win the ball and put in Mane with a 20 yd through ball that led to the first goal. He has been very slow tempo in nearly everything for quite a while but today he really stepped up the tempo and aggression and looked a much better player for it.

Thought he did well today.

- Nearly scored after 1 minute with the free that was well saved.

- Cute pass through to Tadic that caused the Norwich right back to get the 2nd yellow

- Won the ball back on the right wing with a great bit of skill that started the move for the first goal just before halftime.

After I criticised him, got to say he had a decent game today. Still disappeared for patches of the game which is strange when we were so dominant. But yes, probably his best game today.

Posted

Never had much of issue with JWP overall, probably remembering he is still a nipper, thought he has gotten a bit stronger this season.

Today I thought he had a great game with Romeu, with all this Victor cobblers maybe he has done what all of us want from our players when given the chance and that is grab it with both hands. Build a good partnership with Romeu and create a problem for the management.

Just a shame he has U21 duties as an afternoon meet up Gareth Bale on the free kicks might just give him that quarter of an inch to make the difference.

Nearly scored from a free kick today - maybe one day he will.

Haha my thoughts exactly. But that was his best free kick to date and with less than a minute on the clock it fired everyone up for a good game. He made the first goal through sheer hard work and revelled in the deeper role. For that reason he ended up my MOTM. That said, didn't everyone in a saints shirt have a really good game today?

Mane's contribution was absolutely streets ahead of Ward-Prowse's.

His free-kicks are the most predictable thing in the world. He ALWAYS goes the same side, and he rarely hits the target. What we need to do is build a set-piece around someone else passing the ball into the other corner as he begins his run up. Ruddy was cheating towards the keeper's right for the second free-kick because he knew where it was going.

Until he actually scores one they're all potential and no outcome - though even saying that he's the best we've got at it.

It seems that partnerships very often make a player look better than he is. The obvious one recently seems to be Fonte and Lovren. Svensson/Lundekvam was another. Maybe Romeu and JWP is something that clicks and will work. Still, it's but one game so we'll see what happens.
