Ron Vlaar signs according to the Star

Surely a rag like the star still has minimum standards - 'being linked' is cheap talk, perfect for plausible deniability. Everyone does it; everyone gets away with it.

But claiming that someone's actually signed - that's slightly different.

Not only a done deal but a done deal for a "Man Utd target"! This could be the start of a shift in the balance of power between the two clubs. No way will Sadio even consider going there after this, and no doubt Morgan will be questioning if it was the right move after all.

Well, this would be the white flag for our season.

Not fit until half the season is over, Yoshi and Caulker to cover this position.

I guess this means VVD is staying at Celtic or going to Everton or Stoke.

Went does it mean anything? The story is obviously rubbish so why jump to negative conclusions?

Yep 100% this speculative story means that our season is over and we can put up the white flag - so no need for you to keep posting, it's over, obviously.

They're not claiming that someone's actually signed.

I guess this means nothing of the sort as absolutely nothing has been said about VVD.

This would be a pants signing, would just add to an already pretty slow back line and not what we need at all.... Which is why I can't see this being true.

FWIW, I agree, but it will leave all of us scratching our heads wondering about the clubs direction if it is proven true.

The club have no-one but themselves to blame for the media feeding frenzy about ins and outs. I am all in favour of keeping the activity confidential, but jesus, get them over the f**king line in reasonable order. Then the media would shut up.

These last 1 or 2 signings are taking a lifetime, and I reckon there is a chance they wont get completed in time.

LOL at the illiteracy on here again.

"this would be" means if this is the case. Come on, this would be a f**king awful signing if true, compared to who he is replacing and who we had come to expect replacing Toby. And you all know it.

Where did I say I believe it ?

I think it's more to do with jumping to negative conclusions whether or not the story is true or not. Guessing that VVD will be signing for Stoke or Everton (what you said) is a slight knee jerk reaction don't you think?

Instead of jumping to conclusions fed by some Italian Journo via The Star, why don't we wait and see if there is any truth in the rumour until we wet the bed. IF it is true, it doesn't mean that another CH wont be coming in. Still plenty of time until the window closes.

Or maybe Dutch CB to be announced Wednesday (after Celtic CL match), and the reporter has put 2 and 2 together and got Vlaar, rather than (hopefully) VvD.

Ah, but according to The Star he is a Manchest-er Uni*ted target!!

Everybody is a Manchester United target. I got a call yesterday, it was probably from them, though in the end I put the phone down before anyone their end spoke, but I'm almost certain it was Woodward.

Also Vlaar is a free agent so could sign anytime. If we are keen on him he could train with us to proove his fitness and then sign once he is near to being available.

Why would we waste a few hundred grand rather than do that?

it has to be a load of bollix

Because someone else might sign him in the meantime.

Hopefully they do. He would have been a good signing two years ago but not now and it would be a disappointing, cheap signing if it was instead of VVD or similar. Very unlikely we would sign two defenders.

For that reason I doubt its true, although the Italian journalist memtioned by the Star seems clear on it.

No one has suggested it's "instead". The longer it goes on without him signing, the cheaper his wages will get.

What's not to like about this one? Experienced premier league player and highly capped international, leader on the pitch and in the dressing room, only a year ago hailed as being a star of the world cup coming to us on a free transfer. Great bit of business

I remember the 6-1 game quite vividly.

It must be instead (if true) because we don't need 5 senior centre backs, all on decent wages, surely?

From what I've seen so far, we need 2, at the moment we've got 1. Maybe we just consider Yoshida as RB cover now... Caulker needs more games in a solid defence but his presence is part of it not looking like a solid defence.

To be honest, having seen us concede to Midtjylland with Romeu and Wanyama in front of Caulker and Fonte and some of the mistakes made, I could see why we'd want to strengthen or CB options - I suspect he's 3rd choice behind Koulibaly and van Dijk though, and of course without a team his agent is going to be happy to put word out that we might have an interest just in case it prompts someone else to make an offer.
