Dalek2003 Posted 23 August, 2015 Share Posted 23 August, 2015 The problem I have with this strategy is that the first team is so disrupted, so regularly, it makes reaching the "cup final or two" a game of chance rather than planned. I read many articles last season saying that it was a weak EPL season. Maybe there was an element of luck in our achievements ? Looking at how Everton and Newcastle appear to be much stronger this season as an initial impression, we could find ourselves significantly lower in the table, and accordingly our cup chances reduced. The strategy is great from an accountants perspective, but I dont see us making steady continual progress on the pitch. How far down the league ? Comfortable lower mid table or nail bitingly close to the trap door ?

Except we did make progress last season and your sneering whining dismissal of it being all down to luck proves you really are an imbecile. alpine_saint Posted 23 August, 2015 Share Posted 23 August, 2015 How far down the league ? Comfortable lower mid table or nail bitingly close to the trap door ? I guess we are talking about yo-yoing between the two, with an occasional freak foray into the top 8. So actually, since the days of managers like Ball, Hoddle and Stachan, absolutely f**k-all has changed....
wadesmith Posted 23 August, 2015 Share Posted 23 August, 2015 That is spot on You are completely correct..but I guess 30 years ago I was supporting a team..and not a business model & I guess that's where disillusionment sets in. Even players like Shearer and Wallace we got to keep for 6/7 years. Part of supporting a team is not just enjoying the success but identifying with players and having heroes you can grow up with . I guess that part of supporting Saints is pretty much over.
Wade Garrett Posted 23 August, 2015 Share Posted 23 August, 2015 I don't think our present strategy is sustainable on a playing front. Maybe we should concentrate a few signings on decent 27/28 year olds who we could get a decent 4/5 years from. Would stop the raping of our team every Summer. We might all be excused for thinking that the playing side of the business is not top priority. Nothing beats a settled team and at the moment our team seems some distance from that. Hoddle makes the point in the Mail today that the manager spends a lot of his time sorting out transfers rather than coaching the squad.

We are kidding ourselves if we think RK is staying for the next 20 years. Current strategy IMO is the only way we can attempt to grow the club enough to be able to compete at this level. Until the club is grown enough we just can't compete on wages and so will always lose our stars. Unless KL is prepared to invest something like the 1 billion that has been invested at Chelsea, Man City, Man Utd and even Liverpool who excluding wages are well on their way to half a billion since Brenda has been in charge. I agree although shearer left a bit before, I've been going since my first game in 1969 so know what you mean but that's how it is now sadly
Gemmel Posted 23 August, 2015 Share Posted 23 August, 2015 I . And that's the issue. Even if Katrina wanted to invest a billion or so, she's not allowed too. FFP, is anything but.
