Yoshida right back?

Thought he did okay defensively but what's going on when he's preferred to both right back signings of soares and Martina. I can tell why soares was dropped but doesn't say a lot for the two of them when Yoshida is preferred.

I think he played to help deal with the aerial threat.

This. There was no other valid reason. He did OK really, but we do miss the overlapping runs of a proper RB. However, he was at fault with others (Rodriguez and Fonte) for our goal. Although I could see the logic of not playing Cedric, why not play Martina instead, he could have provided the attacking option and also helped with the aerial threat.

Yoshida did well at right back, but we were screaming out for more attack minded full backs last night.

I suspect his height in knowing Midtjylland were set piece experts might have been a contributory factor - Caulker sure as hell wasn't picked for his finesse either and really needs to get up to speed with the fact we're a possession side which usually passes on the floor. Good attacking presence, ironically.

Pretty sure Cedric was just rotated out and will start on Sunday, but equally he might now stay out as scoring in Midtjylland is essential and we can't go an entire match with the full backs baulking at the opportunity to run into 40 yards of open space in front of them...

Fine as back up when needed but should never be a starter at either CB or RB - too error prone.

Completely agree, he's good cover and useful to have when a more physical defensive presence is needed at full back. Which you'd imagine won't be that much this season!

I think sometimes it is easy to overthink a game plan. We should have enough about us to let them worry about us rather than worrying about them. The old Stokes of this world don't do anything different to other teams, just more of it. Any defence should be able to deal with aerial threats as well as ground threats. Ashley Cole isn't the tallest (5' 9") but I don't recall Chelsea dropping him to the bench whenever they played Stoke.

Is it fact that Cedric didn't play due to his height? Did RK confirm this?

Martina is a 6' RB. Is he injured or what's the score there?

Under the assumption that Cedric is being rested - given that we've got previous for working players very hard to develop their physique and leaving them out of the side for recovery, that just leaves a choice being Martina and Yoshida, which is probably why people are assuming we put the bigger player in there to combat set pieces.

That is what makes a mockery of our right back recruitment though - we signed 2 full backs yet prefer to play a centre half out of position.

Why sign Martina...oh yeah he was cheap but surely even in L1 there are better options. Waste of wages signing Martina then not playing him.

With 3 non creative midfielders we needed full backs to give us width - Targett apart from 1 occasion last night never goes past his man and delivers too deep and so did Yosh that gives defenders ages to see the cross.

Strange recruitment - I like Romeu, Stek and Caulker makes sense - Clasie needs a bit of time and can't judge so far although some melts on here written off already but Martina not being picked can't see that at all.

part of the reason he got such a" bad press" from fans was that under Pochettino he wasn't a first choice, and when he did get a start ...it was often to plug a gap at RB.

He looks much more comfortable on the left of the defence and ----TBF----looks a better player after a few consecutive outings.

Koeman has more faith in him and he's getting the game time that he lacked before. I think he's dependable and will even improve - if he gets a good run of games.

Part of the reason he gets "bad press" is because playing at centre back he makes at least one awful error every single match. Usually they involve sprinting past a striker and getting wrong side, or hastily clearing to an opponent when better options are available, or just misreading a ball in the air and getting turned, or generally just beaten for pace. The last one is at least understandable, but a player in a top half Prem side should not be the kind of liability he proves himself to be on a regular basis.

Having said all that, he's good enough to be cover in a side with the budgetary limitations we have, and he does provide a defensive option for the full back positions if we ever want that option. He's looked a lot better in the left back position than he did in the first few times he played there and should be considered as an option as opposed to the equally defensive and currently beleaguered Targett. The full back position is a little more forgiving of hastiness than the positions directly in front of goal.

However, neither of them offer us what we're looking for in most matches from our fullbacks though, which is attacking, overlapping play and crosses from deep.
