Saint Fan CaM Posted 20 August, 2015 Share Posted 20 August, 2015 Why oh why do we always defend corners with no-one positioned on the midway line? For all the good he does in the box, why not leave Mane up field ready to break. It would take 2 of their players out of play. 3-4 times this evening we cleared the ball to...no one. And that's basically why they scored. Just seems really daft to me.
Katalinic Posted 20 August, 2015 Share Posted 20 August, 2015 Said the same. We clear it and inevitably it is going to come straight back in.
Saint_clark Posted 20 August, 2015 Share Posted 20 August, 2015 We've done it the same way for as long as I can remember now. At least since Pochettino became manager and I'm pretty sure when Adkins was manager too.

It is just plain daft not to leave an outlet. 10 in the box makes no sense.
John Boy Saint Posted 21 August, 2015 Share Posted 21 August, 2015 When you have Whippets like Mane and Long (and J-Rod soon on tonights showing) in the team one of them bobbing about keeping 2 of theirs busy, you would think it makes sense hold their position in our half as soon as someone lumps one right up the field they can sprint after it someone is either going to have to take one for the team or with their pace a 1 on 1 with the keeper opportunity, it also clears our box sharpish too, instead of That first corner from their #21 which was fizzed across the box only needed a stray Bluebottle to fly into it and it would have been in the back of the net. skintsaint Posted 21 August, 2015 Share Posted 21 August, 2015 Do we concede goals from opposition corners? We probably concede more from our own!
ErwinK1961 Posted 21 August, 2015 Share Posted 21 August, 2015 Spot on. We discussed this after the Everton game (when they exploited leaving people up!) and again last night. Really don't understand why it doesn't happen, as you say, what benefit is Mane to us in our own box? Though it has been like this for a while, Adkins used to leave 1/2 up in his first few games here, then he seemed to change it to no-one and its been the same ever since. Saint Fan CaM Posted 21 August, 2015 Author Share Posted 21 August, 2015 Completely weird. I watched Mane - his role is to protect the keeper it seems which basically just helps immobilise the keeper. He has little or no height, so keeping him forward takes two of their players out the game and probably players who are better designed to shoot (i.e. probably would not place the taller players to mark him). This kind of tactic really does my head in particularly when we're chasing a game.
Whitey Grandad Posted 21 August, 2015 Share Posted 21 August, 2015 When Ivan Golac was my neighbour we used to talk football quite often (obviously). He said that he liked to leave three players upfield because the other team would then need to keep four players back.
Golden Balls Posted 21 August, 2015 Share Posted 21 August, 2015 Mentioned this a lot over the years. Never understand it. Even in Sunday league you'd leave someone up. There must be a reason.
John Boy Saint Posted 21 August, 2015 Share Posted 21 August, 2015 If there are any Twits on here ask Ronald via the blue bird as he seems receptive to that particular medium of communication.
Mosin Posted 21 August, 2015 Share Posted 21 August, 2015 I always thought it was obvious as Adkins has said in the past and Pochy and Ronald, we defend as a team, attack as a team and control games as a team, this builds team work with in the team so every body knows they must help each other out and not any one player is more special than the other. plus how many times is the ball cleared and ends up at the half way line? Plus when clearing a ball it should be put out of play not in front of goal so some one can take a pot shot from range possibly hitting some one on the through and ending up in the back of the net. Although it is good to be able to hit on the counter after a corner, i will agree, but it goes against the clubs philosophy of doing every thing as a team. I think you misunderstand what "doing things as a team" means. Unless you think we should get rid of the goalkeeper? The main reason (as usual) that this discussion has come up is because Wanyama hoofed a ball clear and we didn't have anyone outside the area at the time. I actually agree that Mane would be an ideal outlet, but I suspect what we do to defend against Midtjyelland isn't the same as how we defend other teams. for_heaven's_Saint Posted 22 August, 2015 Share Posted 22 August, 2015 We look more likely to concede from our own corners at the moment!
