Southampton v FC Midtjylland: Match Thread

Hard to tell with a pixelated stream (anyone else have one with no commentary?) but I couldn't see much of a push, not from Caulker anyway

he was leaning on the other guys shoulder, but it was a bit like the one that Lovren bought against B'mouth.

Only tuned in at about 35 minutes in. Observations so far: JWP looking half-decent, Targett looks vastly improved over the Everton game, Yoshi looking good at RB (though I don't understand why Cedric isn't there). Pelle's chesting skills are ace, JRod still looks rusty, Romeu looks pretty good. Mane looks frustrated, he's trying to do too much on his own. Caulker's goal should have stood, penalty call was good work by Pelle, JWP and referee.

Midgetlland are defending very dense and deep. Could be tricky to score another.

Pretty accurate I'd say, except it took Targett about 35 minutes to warm up! And Romeu's early 40-yd shots are still going up...

Mane wasting good possession twice in a row with through balls that were never going to make it. Needs to run at them if he's going to drop that deep.

Clearly he doesn't want that transfer and he's showing LvG that he's not consistent enough for them yet.

To be fair if he were consistently as good as we know he can be I'd expect Barcelona and Juventus on the phone.

I honestly don't understand all the hatred towards Alpine. He's entitled to his opinion and I have to say, I agree with a lot of what he says.

How many clubs qualify for Europe and then flog off their best players for a second year running? Surely the idea of qualifying for European football is to show your better players that the club has real ambition. Show them intent by bringing in better players who will help to take things forward. Not Saints. They just sell & try & replace on the cheap. As a fan it's extremely disappointing to see.

Arrrrrrgh target had to get that on....: target

Difficult one tbf, ball was coming at him quick and if he took a touch he would've been closed down and unable to shoot. Unlucky - on another day he would hit that with the outside of his boot and that would be in the bottom corner!

Er, one?

All the same, I agree it is disappointing. Nevertheless, Morgan served us well and got his deserved step up to Champs League; Clyne is a mercenary and aimed for the dollar signs. The others? Meh!

Yeah. Deffo. We have not quite been sharp enough in front of goal a few times.

We sure have another goal in us

It does look that way, and I agree. You'd have thought we'd strengthen and improve for Europe. But we've become weaker.. leaving our profits largely unspent.

We were like £30m+ in debt to our owner, I'm not too surprised that we've not been big spenders, especially with the training pavilion. If we get VvD in for the ~£12m sum touted then we'll have roughly broken even this window I believe.

I agree it would have been great to keep Morgan and Clyne, but Morgan clearly didn't want to be here last season let alone this one, and Clyne has shown before that he's happy to run his contract down and leave on a free. Would Clyne have won us £8m worth of points? Possibly, but I doubt it. If he didn't want to sign a new contract then he had to be sold.
