Just wondering, is anyone currently or been in the past a taxi driver?

At the early stages of considering it as a job and wanting info as to whether you'd recommend it and the positive and negative of doing it.... And any costs and possible earning potential.

I did it part time for a few years when I was saving up for my first house

Paid my mortgage but I hated it.

OK early on in the evening when most of the customers were fairly nice but became more challenging as the evening progressed

Think it may be even more challenging now as evidenced by watching a couple of well oiled, mouthy individuals getting into a cab at 4.30 pm !!! yesterday afternoon

Best of luck if you do decide to progress the option.

I have a taxi business based in the forest, I do have some very very good customers. When its going well its ok. Far too many people doing it now. I have stopped doing late nights Friday and Saturday.

I dont know what its like in town any more, if you struggle to get a taxi then we are busy. I dont think that is an issue in many places now.

I have taken just under £600 in one day but doubt that will ever happen again.

I would not get hackney plate, if you are any good at it and have a good client base a Private hire will do you fine.

Corporate transfers is a safer bet, they tend not to puke, p1ss or stick a knife into your neck.

Call me if you wish

Thanks scoobs. As a beginner, would it be best to work through a company to learn the ropes as it were and then look to go it alone after a few months / Year?

What sort of costs are involved? I dint want to earn an excessive amount, but obviously there is a minimum level (take home between 6-700 p/w) - is that realistic on the taxis?

Go with a company to start, You will need to put some hours in to get to that level

Not sure how it works in town, but say goodbye to your weekends. You will pay a rent for the radio and car, some do it on a % split.

School runs seem to be doing ok, I know a few that have wheel chair access vehicles.

You also need to understand some companies have a pecking order for more established drivers, so dont expect some good runs for a while.

Call a few companies see what they offer, you will need to get a licence for yourself

Failing that wait for Uber to start down here

Scoobie

Presume you still need to pass the equivalent of the 'knowledge' with the relevant Local Licensing Authority?

If so that was relatively easy when I did it.

Also do you need to pass CRB checks?

New Forest council now require a knowledge test, when I applied for my licence I didnt need it.

CRB or whatever its called now (if you are a pedo or just a naughty person wait for Uber to start)

Its different in the Forest most of my customers don't have house numbers, not a fan of sat nav as it doesn't teach you much.

Yes it does have its advantages, also it's disadvantages

I haven't been in many bad situations, been in some strange and interesting ones !!

I tend to do long haul now, just off to Alton this morning

Dad, brother and uncle are all taxi drivers. They all seem to be moaning there are too many cabs out there now meaning it's slim pickings. Best way to go is account work (running pilots between airports etc) and school runs. Can't imagine you can just walk into getting those though.

Just leaving for the match so don't have time now, but pm me any questions if you like. I've just given it up after 12 years, driving PH in town.
