Fitzhugh Fella Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 What it says on the tin, can't believe it personally
Batman Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 Bit like lambert. Sell at the right age In Les we trust
Plastic Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 Can't see how this would be true. What's his contract situation with us?
The Corellian Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 Just watched that myself, saying Van Dijk would maybe replace him rather than partner him. Hopefully that's not the case.
Batman Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 Maybe agent talk to sort out a new contract He only signed one 12 months ago
The9 Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 That is incredibly silly in the current situation. If he was to leave it would be for a far better side than them (or Palace for that matter). I will say I expect him to go in the summer though, he's had at least a year more than usual of being good for us without a top 6 side signing him. Ditto Mane and Wanyama, and maybe Rodriguez, Pelle and Cedric could leave too.
The9 Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 Just watched that myself, saying Van Dijk would maybe replace him rather than partner him. Hopefully that's not the case. Caulker plays the same side as Fonte, but I still think it's pretty unlikely - he's not shown any of the usual signs of leaving, he's been at every training session and is playing matches for a start.
Mattio Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 He's a key part of the squad, massive personality and great defender, I can't see the logic in selling him.
ErwinK1961 Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 Surely not? Appreciate he is heading towards a certain age, but he's our captain and clearly a vital player on and off the pitch.
Batman Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 He's a key part of the squad, massive personality and great defender, I can't see the logic in selling him. We won't sell him. But that is what we generally do though. Sell players
Stu Man Do Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 On the basis that this is true , awful decision. Would mean only 1 of last years back 5 being in the team come Saturday having been replaced by a relegated CB and potentially a CB from a truly awful SPL. Bit of a risk I'd say.
Batman Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 Please stop. Go on Adrian. Tell us how we are all negative and then predict another defeat for us
saint lard Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 Perhaps this is is why we are after Virgil Van Dijk and Kalidou Koulibaly? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Batman Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 He won't go. If he did. Purely for the money IMO
shurlock Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 Is he 'in talks' or is he 'linked' with villa as per the other thread. Very different things.
Appy Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 Is he 'in talks' or is he 'linked' with villa as per the other thread. Very different things. Linked, he isn't in talks.
ErwinK1961 Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 Linked, he isn't in talks. In that case, finger off the panic button.
patred44 Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 Maybe agent talk to sort out a new contractnew agent flexing his muscles
MAY-Z Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 Perhaps this is is why we are after Virgil Van Dijk and Kalidou Koulibaly? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk That was my first thought - he certainly didn't look himself last week though - not that any of our defence looked solid
saint-crinny Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 would be genuinely amazed if this happened. Was only a week or so ago he was getting all emotional about captaining us in Europe, why he swap that and Koeman for Villa and Sherwood. Also, he was quoted on VVD and what a good player he is - if he knew that was his replacement as suggested above, i doubt he'd be giving it that chat. Would put this down as media looking at who needs what, who is linked with who, plus agents getting in the mix.
Suhari Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 Wasn't he 'linked with' Palace last summer? That phrase 'linked with' - can mean all sorts. Can't believe for a second he's looking for a move....captain of a progressive club, playing in Europe, etc etc?
teacher Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 Why would Fonte go to the likes of Villa? He has been working on achieving European football since League 1 with Saints and now we have it. If he went to Villa or Everton there is now guarantee that he will ever play in a European competition at his age in his career. So one is on a wind up. Or it is his agent talking ****!
Saint Charlie Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 Has the OP had a mare here with his sensationalist reporting of a link? For those who didn't see it, what exactly was said?
Saint-Armstrong Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 Fonte to swap five years of work, to get to the point of captaining Southampton in Europe as one of the club's top earners... for what? Tim Sherwood, an owner who is looking to sell at the first opportunity without putting any more money into the club, and a club who don't sell out their ground after spending seasons scrapping around the relegation zone. Don't see it.
Saint Rees Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 Will probably find out either way in RK's press conf this afternoon, surely rubbish/agent talk
Saint Charlie Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 Could be a nice new contract on the way though!
SuperSAINT Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 VILLA IN FONTE TALKS Aston Villa could be set to make another signing this summer as we understand they are talks to sign Southampton captain Jose Fonte. The defender signed a new deal last summer until 2017 but it is understood that Villa and Everton are interested in signing him. Saints, though, would not let him leave without signing a replacement centre-back and Celtic's Virgil van Dijk is their number one target.
ericb Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 Sounds crazy but then i remember thinking the same when there was talk of Lambert going. I honestly don't think it's beyond the realms of possibility, especially since we're looking at the center back from Napoli (according to rumours). Personally i'd be extremely disappointed if it was true as he's been there since league one and seems like a real leader, but at the end of the day there's little to no sympathy in this game so it won't be a shock either.
SuperSAINT Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 Sounds crazy but then i remember thinking the same when there was talk of Lambert going. True. I'd imagine this will get confirmed or debunked very quickly. Would be odd timing, especially with his comments re: Virgil.

Van Dijk and Caulker, replacements for Alderweireld and Gardos. So, as Saints "would not let him leave without signing a replacement centre-back", we're not letting him leave.
Saint Charlie Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 Would be a terrible move for us. Even more so because he is one of the few players we have to have a history with, and passion for, the club. Probably a new contract ruse. If not, no chance we should be forced to sell our best defender to a competitor.
The9 Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 Like I say, I can see him going to one of the top 6 (either Spurs or Liverpool to be honest) in 2016, definitely can't see him going to one of the bottom 10 now.
Mouldy Coat Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 It's not like Villa can offer him a major bumper pay packet so it sounds like rubbish to me
Appy Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 Will be interesting to hear Koeman on this in today's press conference.
Hatch Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 I can't see him training in todays Southampton snapchat
View From The Top Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 Why would he want to leave us for villa? Last big payday.
igsey Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 Seems ridiculous to me, what can Villa offer him that we can't? He's the first name on the teamsheet every week, and rightly so. As many have pointed out he's just got a new agent who's probably looking for a pay day, either from a transfer or a new contract. We can't afford to lose Jose, our defence has already looked shaky this season, it would fall apart without him. Should be our highest earner.
hutch Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 "We wanna make you an offer for Fonte" "Fook off" Talks?
Saint86 Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 People need to get a grip ffs. This place is a nuthouse at times. Only last week he was saying that leading saints out in Europe was the proudest moment of his career. He isn't leaving for villa. How is that remotely believable? And look, this is me telling you this! According to some (bunch of numpties) I am one of the biggest bed wetters" on the forum for highlighting that our current first 11 isn't as strong as last season's first 11 yet!
Appy Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 I can't see him training in todays Southampton snapchat I make that him far right on the knees up bit.
Verbal Kint Posted 13 August, 2015 Posted 13 August, 2015 He won't go. If he did. Purely for the money IMO Could you begrudge him that at this stage of his career? as one of the club's top earners Do you know that?
