Maybe it's just me, but does anyone else feel a bit let down by the transfer dealings of the last 2 summers.

Whilst I'm massively thankful for all the Liebers efforts since taking over Southampton, it feels like the momentum built of the last few years has been lost. The vision lost and the passion for development of the club somewhat slowing & decreasing.

This summers signings have in my opinion from what I can see not moved us forwards as a club, and with all the sales of the last few transfer windows I wonder now whether as a club we've now on a downward trajectory.

Well, seeing as we finished 1 place higher, 4 points better off, with only 33 goals conceded......we didn't lose any momentum what so ever.

Trash post.

Alpine will be here shortly to congratulate you on being brave for daring to speak the truth.

bit of an odd post

however, selling your best players in 2s or 3s every summer will eventually hurt you.

enjoy it while it lasts I guess

I am glad we are shot of the muppets we got rid of... with the obvious exception of Spiderman who is going to be a hard act to follow both in his football and his manner.... regards the others.... good riddance.... I am happy with what we have.... 2-2 was a great result considering who we having missing and how pumped Newcastle were... onwards and upwards and try to remain realistic...

"The Dutch Xavi"? Crap signing. We should be signing "The Dutch Messi" and no less.

Seriously 2 summers ago we signed Osvaldo, and the summer before we brought in Ramirez. I think our transfer dealings the last two summers under Ronald have been far more intelligent signings. We're not blowing large sums of money anymore.

Have I gone back to the summer of 2014?

No, really not a lot else to say on this particular subject.

My only small gripe is that we have gone from being a team with an English, club-trained spine, to a team of mainly foreign imports.

You make it sound like it is part of the club's business plan. Even if we were to lose a couple of decent players every year (and players always move on at some point) it doesn't have to hurt you as long as your recruit well.

If you were only talking about this summer specifically you might have a point.

Until proven otherwise you have to assume that Clasie won't be as good as Schneiderlin, and it certainly seems that Martina & Cedric combined will never come close to adequately replacing Clyne.

Add to that the fact that we haven't signed another top-quality centre-back to replace Alderweireld (as Caulker certainly isn't a like-for-like swap) and you could be quite justified in believing that we haven't covered for the loss of our best three players particularly well to be frank.

Compare that to last summer's outs, ins and replacements:

Lambert = Pelle

Lallana

Lovren

Boruc = Forster

Shaw = Bertrand

This summer's window has been markedly below that in my opinion.

Very apt name for the op.

Braveheart, do not dare to express your own views on here, you will be crucified.

I dont agree with your sentiments but you have the perfect right to express them on a forum.

The problem is that we have wasted millions on so called big name signings but seem to be more successful with players who have potential but do not cost fortunes. Nevertheless, I am still concerned about our defence at present and I think that area needs a fair bit of decent cash spent on it.

Based on a transfer window that is still open. And 1 Prem game. Or none, in Clasie's or Caulker's case. Jeeeez

Certainly, more money is coming in than going out.

Apparently, thats "sustainability" though in the times of Roopert Lowe it was called a lot worse.

I'm not agreeing with the OP but there is a point in there which has been lost in the rather hysterical reaction.

Most clubs with significant aspirations have a transfer budget over and above break-even on the ins and out of last season's squad. The television money funds it - and the associated increases in the wage budget.

Unless I'm mistaken, in the past two seasons we haven't spent any money above the net on player ins and outs, which would mean that we don't have such an "aspiration budget" - or at least haven't used it yet.

I like our squad, too, but I'd like it a hell of a lot more with two or more quality acquisitions. We were so close to Top 6 status last year, or even Top 5, and those additional acquisitions could make the difference between getting there this year or falling away to 8-10 - especially in a Europa season, and especially with some of our peer clubs being quite active.

And I'm not talking about relinquishing our commitment to self-sustainability. I really like that.

Hopefully those players will arrive in the next few weeks.

Definitely one of few clubs with a negative net transfer spend over the past two summer windows.

But we have upgraded our TG, increased our wage bill and have a good squad.

Sooner or later we will have a summer where we don't have two £20m plus players that we can sell so will presumably then have built up enough of a reserve to do our transfer business.

To have a negative net transfer spend and still have a good squad is to the credit of Reed, the Scouting team and various Managers and Coaches for improving players to the point where CL teams wanted them for top dollar.

Just accept the fact that as soon as any club from the top 6 is remotely interested in 1 of our players they'll leave. We've finished as high as we can for a club our size. Fans gets accused of being deluded for wanting Champions League football but now the club are being accused of lacking ambition. Make up your ****ing minds.

Yes, what we want is more money going out than coming in, which is a far better model of sustainability (copyright Portsmouth FC)

9/10, as Trousers would say.

In the u21 game tonight ignoring Clasie 8 out of 10 have played for the first team....not exactly ignoring them is it?

We're nothing but victims of our own success. Had players left for sideways moves then we could question things. Slightly disappointed that all our signings have their wages covered by incoming transfer fees as well, but I am not sure if that is club policy now or something we have to do because of FFP and / or lack of commercial income.

I think the hardest part for any Saints fan is we know next summer it's going to be Wanyama, Mane and Rodriques that are leaving next.

We have reached our highest level and we just need to enjoy that ride.

Well said. I think this season could see us struggling a the wrong end of the table and that is down to penny pinching in the transfer market.

Still, if we make our two key signings we should be ok this season.

I love it when you deliberately misspell people's names to make them look rubbish. Can we have one for Les Reed please? What about Less Weed?

Agree 100%.Unless we show more ambition or win a trophy, this will happen possibly with the exception of Jay Rod. Wanyama has already hinted he wants to move at some point and we know Mane can cause a fuss when he wants to.

That's right, this regime is identical to Lowe's in every single way. Thank you for opening my eyes to that. The money saving tactics are exactly the same.

'Flabbergasted' might be a strong way of putting it but...seriously? Am I being all that unreasonable if I say that I'm a little disappointed by the recruitment so far?

I don't know...it seems a little underwhelming to be fair.

(I of course realise that the club is fantastically run, has a brilliant manager and is in the best position its ever been in and as a 24-year-old, the majority of my time following Saints growing up as a teenager and young adult was in the lower leagues, so I don't need to be told to appreciate where we are now!)

Its just that having said all that, speaking WRT to this transfer window alone...it is kinda disappointing.

Or we have used it on other things like paying off transfer fees from prior years and Staplewood.
