I don't get the Caulker worries. He had one or two shaky moments but overall did well I thought. That block in the second half was brilliant. He will improve. I think we all know another CB will be signed and he will be a rotation player.

I don't know why everyone is worried about Caulker. The lad will do ok for us, he's had a disrupted pre season and is trying to fit into a new system. He didn't start well but he grew into the game and made some very good challenges.

The thing that would bother me more is the gaping hole in midfield. If we play like that against Newcastle they will over run us but I am pretty sure that the players dropped a gear after Pelle's goal. There was no need to keep such a high tempo.

Overall i'm very happy. We've had a decent confidence building pre season and have won our first two competitive games of the season 5-0 without being particularly troubled.

Newcastle's pre season hasn't been great and they lost to York so I think we'll be going into the game with a lot more confidence than them.

Add to all that, that we are now seeded, it's been a cracking start to the season. COYS!!!!!!!

P.S. Big shout out to Martina who looked very comfortable. Funny how some fans never learn to not write off a player before they've got going ffs.

Spot on fella.

Yoshida was excellent. Caulker, worrying. Stekeleburg, as I said ages ago, miles better than Forster, he'll prove that this season. Still need a solid, polished centre half and for me, another centre mid to help wanyama out in the more difficult games.

Caulker will be OK. He's a big unit. He probably had a disrupted pre-season what with the uncertainty over his future at QPR.

Very professional, thought Arnhem would put up a much bigger fight TBH but glad we're through.

Great to see that Pelle is looking sharp, need a big season from him all the way till May.

I hope Saints take this cup seriously all the way through, this is a good competition with some very tasty teams in it and we have a chance to go a long way.

Big raspberry to all the losers at Wet Sham, what a joke club getting kicked out by a glorified pub team, at least we won't have to play them now.

While Saints did a thoroughly professional job over two legs, I thought last night's performance was scrappy.

I don't think I have seen us give the ball away so much in the last three seasons. Our passing was sloppy and either over or under-weight. For a team whose game is based on passing and possession that did not augur well.

Having said that, carrying a 3-0 lead into the second leg and increasing that within four minutes of the start meant the tie was effectively over and the result was several players clearly coasted through the game.

Wanyama was the main culprit and while it's hard to criticise the husbanding of resources with bigger and more important things to come, last night presented a good opportunity to sharpen up the passing ahead of Newcastle.

Although we ultimately won comfortably, I don't think I'm the only one concerned by the ease with which Arnhem found space 35-25 yards from goal in between the back four and the holding midfielders. They must have had three or four good shooting opportunities from around the 20 yard mark, and better quality players would exploit that.

Some will find an immediate explanation for that in Schneiderlin's departure. I'm a big fan of JWP, his football brain and his ability to keep things ticking over with his passing, but he is not a holding midfielder. Neither is Davis.

I would imagine Targett will start at left-back on Sunday. Yoshida did as good a job as he could at left back, and I presume he played there as Koeman does not think Targett is physically up to the task of two games in quick succession.

Yoshida's offensive limitations at left-back (he did well defensively) do highlight how important our full-backs are in getting forward and providing width.

I wasn't entirely convinced by Caulker. Sure, he's had a disrupted pre-season and that was his first competitive game, but he does suffer from brain-fade at times.

I felt sorry for Pelle last night. He did all that was asked of him as Saints played long balls up to him. He won pretty much every ball in the air and I presume the plan was to get Mane feeding off him, but all too often Pelle was isolated.

Over the two legs, I never thought we were in any danger of not going through, and a 5-0 scoreline over two legs against the highest-ranked team we could have drawn at this stage is the headline we should all be celebrating.

But I watched that game last night with a lot of frustration.

However, I trust whichever of the Koemans is in charge on Sunday to get it right.

Good to read your thoughts FM. I think you've probably addressed your valid concerns by acknowledging that the players took their foot off the gas as soon as the tie was, to all intents and purposes, done and dusted. I agree that "better players would exploit that" but the likelihood is that Saints wouldn't be coasting around the field if we were playing better quality players and in a tie where the result wasn't yet nailed on.

I'm more than happy with the 'scrappy' performance. I'm sure if we'd gone all gung-ho for a more convincing display and then lost to Newcastle on Sunday we'd have people on here on Sunday evening bemoaning the unnecessary additional effort we put in vs Vitesse...

Just my two pennies worth.

The only thing I'd add to this was that Vitesse also had good opportunities in the first leg. I know it's hard to go an entire game without the opposition having a chance, but for a large part of the second half (particularly when Clasie went off, even though he didn't appear to have a good game), it seemed Vitesse were controlling the game.

Hopefully it is just a mix of pre-season and complacency, I guess we will find out on Sunday!

What a great day.

Back in London already. Very special. The square was great and the welcome from Vitesse fans was brilliant. Only slightly ruined by the Feyenoord fans briefly causing havoc.

Away end was great - second half was amazing, 20 minutes of Wanyama song was epic. Also nice to see the saints fans giving the group of Kenyans such a great reception and getting them involved. Funny to see Kenyan flags in the away end. All in all superb day.

I think you're reading too much into it, to be honest. We did a thoroughly professional and efficient job over 2 legs. We played away from home in Europe, at a decent standard, and won 2-0 - after over a decade of being out of it. I thought it showed another side of our game, whereby we can slip a few gears and still get the job done. We didn't need to play at full tilt in these games, and that shows how good a squad we have these days. If we'd lost, fair enough, but there's no need to start waving the stick at certain players for what was a job well done. Onto the next one.

good points. But us being out of it for a decade has zero impact IMO.

most of the players are no strangers to Vitesse, let alone european competition

Read the post in full, I am behind the team and said a 5-0 scoreline over the highest-ranked team we could have drawn is a reason to celebrate.

But that doesn't mean to say I have to be blinded to what I saw as some shortcomings last night; shortcomings which I trust our coaching staff will have seen and will put right for Sunday.

Honestly, did you think it was a flawless performance last night?

This Southampton have a bigger squad b*llocks. Jeezus.

This time last year they were everyone's tip for relegation after seeing their squad decimated. Now they are thumping a team far far better than the mediocre outfit we have just gone out to.

Southampton. That ****ty small club from the Dell showing more leagues ambition than West Ham. Never imagined i'd see that. Ever.

It says supporters Vitesse are still being held by police for the fights from yesterday. Mentioning no Feyenoord-fans were involved and apparantly it was just a rumor spread by some locals and a local paper. Feyenoord is like the black sheep amongst Dutch football clubs because of its notorious history and media seem to use every opportunity to put us in a bad light because of it.

And dont get me wrong Feyenoord definitely is affilliated with hooliganism, which is something you will find with most big clubs. But even if it were Feyenoord-fans, which it werent, dont judge/generalize a whole club and its supporters because of a few lunatics that use Football as an excuse to start a fight. Thank you.

Dozens of supporters of the football club Vitesse Arnhem have spent the night in the cell. About seventy football fans are arrested Thursday evening after a big brawl in the Centre of the city. An agent wounded. Of the seventy 23 yet remain in the cell. Among them are four British supporters of Southampton.

The other arrested 47 suspects are sent home, but must report to the police at a later date. The detained hooligans have '' a history of soccer violence. ''

Chairs and tables

Vitesse played Thursday night against British Southampton. Arnhem had a special supporters square decorated for thousands of English fans.

According to the police there is thrown with chairs and tables. An agent was slightly injured. When the mobile unit arrived, all fighters holed bosses are in a café. The police took out women and children out of the bar and kept then all male attendees.

Feyenoord

There were rumors that a group of Feyenoord-hooligans would have provoked the brawl, but is, according to a police spokesman Friday. There are also no locals picked up.

Just one incident after thousands of football fans drinking all day is probably a result in the circumstances tbf.

I was there and just before the trouble I saw about 60 Dutch fans walking almost like a platoon up along the side of the square where the DJ was playing and most of the Saints fans were assembled. Not one sported any Vitesse colours although they were chanting "Arnhem". They did not look right and they seemed to know where they were going. 5 minutes later the fighting broke out in the square adjacent to where the majority of the Saints fans were. I got there about 30 seconds afterwards, spoke to some Saints lads who were present and they said these fans started a fight which the police quickly quelled. I spoke to loads of Vitesse fans at the stadium plus your usual taxi drivers etc and to a man they all said this bunch were Feyenoord fans intent on besmirching the good name of Vitesse. I was inclined to believe them to be honest. They were not really targeting Saints fans but just looking to stir up a bit of trouble.

The most dangerous thing about Arnhem was the risk of being run over by a bicycle. Says it all.

About 10 mins before a bunch turned up in the fanzone and let off a smoke bomb. They then gathered around this and organised a mob to walk up to the square where it kicked off. I was going back towards the fanzone between the 2 squares when they walked up, as you say chanting Arnhem.

I then saw police running from the fanzone and heading up to the top area of the other square so followed them and watched from there. They dragged about 5 Dutch out and arrested them.

As we got the bus to the stadium later they had a load more lined up by the main road in handcuffs.

The Feyenoord rumour spread quick, Vitesse fans were stating it as fact shortly after but I had my doubts. Looked like all Arnhem to me.

I walked through the square just before and right after the trouble, and saw someone in a Feyenoord training shirt leaving the street next to the square. I didn't see any others the rest of the weekend.

I also heard people talking about Saints idiots trying to join in, one punching a guy in the face after asking him if "he was Saints", and some chair chucking. Though at the same time, I had a Saints shirt on and walked right back through Korenmarkt whilst the police still had their batons drawn and they were happy to let us come and go, so we clearly weren't the main problem.

Not to mention the whole day that Saints and Vitesse fans happily mixed and sodded about in the squares before and after the match.

As for the actual match, job done in the first 5 minutes and not really bothered about anything much that happened after that - good strength squad giving us the chance to rest Cedric and Targett, and Vitesse didn't offer much threat - even Hooiveld and Fox would have been ok here :D. Effective, with Vitesse not really even getting to the levels of the first leg. Hopefully the yellow cards won't be a problem later, Stekelenburg was flawless again except for that.

this is what it was like in the away end during the later stages of that 20min chant...

shame about the mass of Empty seats all around the back of the stadium. There were flags draped over empty seats too...
