Post-Match Reaction: Vitesse 0-2 SAINTS - [Saints win 5-0 on aggregate]

As a spectacle it wasn't very good but a win, clean sheet and through to the next round so can't complain. Almost like an exhibition game after the first goal went in so no need to discuss individual performances. What I would say is that with our increased squad depth and competition for places players really should be taking every chance they can to impress.

Good to have a bit of momentum going into the new prem season as well. Bring on Newcastle!

First and most importantly, it's a job done. Dire game, but that suited us.

Positives

Pelle looks in good nick

Martina looks decent considering

Keeper is good

Negatives

Can't get the wider midfield players into the game when we play Mane up top with Pelle. May be a personnel issue as Davis, JWP, and Tadic aren't suited to it.

Caulker looks like he has a way to go to be up to scratch for what we need

Enough space for an oil tanker through the centre of the park at times

JWP is struggling to get involved

That'll do.

Didn't exactly set the pitch on fire but then we didn't need to tonight, especially after Pellés goal.

Needs some work to get that back line working together properly but then Caulker is new so I expected him to be a bit out of shape tonight.

Now pray for the right draw in the next round

I'd agree with that. I'd add that Wanyama looks isolated without Morgan's energy alongside.

efficient team performance with some crap individual efforts there

general play was rubbish but a mish-mash defence played a part in that

The keeper looks very solid

Martina was pretty good tonight

Davis was good

Mane and Pelle look good this summer

JWP, Tadic were very very poor

caulker was poor in first 10 mins or so, then looked alright. Hope he just needs game time to get QPR out of his system

if we are seeded, that is fantastic

Okay, that became a bit of a mess. There were two columns with the seeded teams in the left and the unseeded ones in the right. Of the seeded teams FC Copenhagen and Trabzonspor have gone out and FC Zurich would have gone to the seeded teams ahead of us but have gone out as well.

Professional job from Saints. Through the tie safely with minimal effort and no injuries that I'm aware of. Couldn't care less how well Tadic and JWP played, we never needed to rip Vitesse to pieces and we didn't exactly commit people forward. The real test will come on Sunday.

That's as comfortable as it gets. Excellent result over the two ties. An underwhelming yet professional performance tonight. Never any need for the players to get out of 2nd gear.

WE MARCH ON!

The game was so rubbish - but who cares we looked solid throughout. Apart from a Caulker brainfart on a set-piece we were very comfortable. He made a few vital challenges and interceptions, he cut out alot of low crosses and redeemed himself.

Positives from tonight are that we're only playing in third gear and we were very comfortable throughout - the big thing was to win with no injuries.

Performance wise, Pelle, Mane were both good when called upon (without ever really excelling themselves)

Yoshida should never play left back, great defensivily but going forward is painful to watch.

Cuco Martina, solid throughout and looked athletic and like a shrewd signing who will play ALOT in this competition.

JWP, mixed performance set up the first goal, a nice free kick and corner, and can drive when need be, he just needs to work on the physical side of his game and bulk up and have more belief in his undoubted ability, I have faith he'll hit some form with more games in the EUROPA this season.

Tadic, probably a passenger, forgot he was playing, looked like he wasn't bothered and like he wanted to just focus on Sunday, our worst player.

Davis, solid as always without ever standing out, played an average game but worked hard.

Wanyama, again played to not get injured and took it easy, looked very laid back but still was a cut above their MF.

So really no standout performances, some mixed ones and if i had to choose an MOM i'm gonna go with Pelle, some nice knock ons a well taken goal which set up the easy victory. He worked hard and looks like a man with confidence.

I think we're holding back for Sunday which will see the high intensity game back and hopefully Tadic will shine as we know he can do, as he's looked shaky in his last two games. Thankfully Mane is looking superb... even today at 60 per cent he scored a well taken goal.

We got the early goal meaning we just had to play a containing game, which we did very efficiently. It wasn't pretty, and we obviously conceded a lot of possession in midfield as a result of not needing to commit players forward, but we played a very good tactical game and got the result.

A 2-0 away win in European competition is not to be sniffed at.

I hope all the travelling fans who were lucky enough to get tickets enjoyed themselves.

Efficient and professional. No need for fireworks at this stage, and seemingly we are good enough to get these sorts of results in Europe - away from home. Very impressive, really.

Martina looks solid, although rarely tested. Stek looks a safe pair of hands, and Mane will just be a barrel of fun this year.

On a final note, welcome back Jay Rodriguez. Great moment for him.

Better viewed via the link. Sampdoria may well go out as well, so looks good for us. Happy days!

Utter moronic management. What is the point of fielding a weakened team at this stage, when they are at Arsenal, which they are unlikely to win anyway? I'd be furious if i was a WHU fan, this is worse than those week teams MP put out.

The media will try and spin it as it being good for West Ham, but this isn't shaping up to be a pretty season for them - in my opinion.

Bilic masked it as not being about Arsenal, but more about the season in general. Whilst I appreciate that West Ham are in a bit of a period of transition, I am not sure how much better they think they can be in the Premier League if they dropped the Europa League unless Bilic thinks they are so bad they could get relegated. West Ham fans deserve better too - with it being the last season at the current ground some big European games could have been a great way to say goodbye to their current home.

We won that whole tie in 3rd gear which is pleasing. Pretty dull game but great result. Steklenburg looks very assured and I thought Caulker grew into the game well. Midfield was disappointing but at 4-0 up for most of the tie won't worry too much.

Shout out to Yoshida. Caulker didn't have a dreadful game, but on several occasions I was reassured to see Maya in the defensive mix. He is a hugely improved player. Not a LB, but a decent CB. Ahead of Caulker IMO.

He is miles ahead of Caulker. Caulker looks scarred from his last two seasons - he looked decent at Swansea to be fair, but some of the things he did tonight weren't great. He has shown he is capable a few years ago, so he'll need to get up to speed in training as I don't like the idea of him doing it in games that matter. There will be mistakes to come, the key will be that they are the last time he makes them.

Yoshida was excellent. Caulker, worrying. Stekeleburg, as I said ages ago, miles better than Forster, he'll prove that this season. Still need a solid, polished centre half and for me, another centre mid to help wanyama out in the more difficult games.

"With just four minutes played, James Ward-Prowse failed to control a deflected cross and the ball fell to Pelle, who took one touch to change direction and set himself before firing home on his left foot." [bBC]

Watching it he made a complete dogs breakfast of controlling the ball. I don't want to make anything of this, but this is why "assists" are so over-rated. I would guess Prowsey will get an assist, but it was a complete **** up that fell nicely for Pelle to score.

But well done to everyone, stroll in the park, never stretched, never really threatened, 5 goal cushion. Bring on the next "opposition".

Yeah, good first 5 minutes ended the tie as a contest, if the first leg didn't already. We weren't tested and move on

Those that cause concern : JWP, Davis, Tadic are passengers. Not contributing.

Let's get a real winger in. Serge Gnabry, before West Brom sign him. We are just too narrow, need to use the width of the pitch.

When we have Bertrand and Cedric width won't be a problem. Martina did well again considering we were told by some he was crap. Offers options going forward

I don't know why everyone is worried about Caulker. The lad will do ok for us, he's had a disrupted pre season and is trying to fit into a new system. He didn't start well but he grew into the game and made some very good challenges.

The thing that would bother me more is the gaping hole in midfield. If we play like that against Newcastle they will over run us but I am pretty sure that the players dropped a gear after Pelle's goal. There was no need to keep such a high tempo.

Overall i'm very happy. We've had a decent confidence building pre season and have won our first two competitive games of the season 5-0 without being particularly troubled.

Newcastle's pre season hasn't been great and they lost to York so I think we'll be going into the game with a lot more confidence than them.

Add to all that, that we are now seeded, it's been a cracking start to the season. COYS!!!!!!!

P.S. Big shout out to Martina who looked very comfortable. Funny how some fans never learn to not write off a player before they've got going ffs.

I

Erwin doing all the post-match media. Looks like Ronald might need surgery tomorrow (in Holland) that'll lay him up in hospital for an achilles tear/snap.

In which case, good luck to Erwin for his game(s) in charge of Saints.

I knew someone that had snapped their achilles and had to be in a wheelchair for about 2 weeks as the leg had to be kept elevated! Hopefully things have moved on since then but this isn't going to give us a great start.
