Saint Charlie Posted 5 August, 2015 Share Posted 5 August, 2015 Simple question: with Turnbull, Stephens and Gallagher out on loan does anyone think there are any young players who are good enough to feature for the first team this season? None have overly impressed in pre season (Stephens aside). Gape, Isgrove and McQueen probably aren't up to it, McCarthy is a maybe unless he is also loaned out. If not he is the closest. I do like the look of Hesketh but he is so slight I don't think he is physically ready yet. Seager gets goals but is a poacher in the Sharp mode and we don't play that sort of style and are well stocked with attackers. Anyone else who is near? Sims and Slattery the most hyped but its probably a season too soon. NB: Counting Reed and Targett as first team players.
trousers Posted 5 August, 2015 Share Posted 5 August, 2015 If Slattery is as good as the 'hype' then I would hope to see him make his first team bow this season, albeit probably no more than as a League Cup sub. (Said trousers, playing the "if you're good enough you're old enough card")
eelpie Posted 5 August, 2015 Share Posted 5 August, 2015 Is the Debayo who played against Espanol the Academy player who signed from Chelsea in 2013? I thought he did well, but can't find any information about him.
Lallana's Left Peg Posted 5 August, 2015 Share Posted 5 August, 2015 Will be a couple of years before we get another breakthrough, or at least players of the calibre of the last 3 years or so. Slattery is the one though.

He did ok but I think he only went on tour because Bertrand was injured, Targett back late and we signed Martina part way through preseason and needed someone to play out there. Forgot to mention Will Wood in the OP, he looks a decent player to me. Edited 5 August, 2015 by Saint Charlie
mightysaints Posted 5 August, 2015 Share Posted 5 August, 2015 Been told by people itk its the current crop of sixteen year olds that's exiting the coaching staff, it will be a while before they are ready but the club expect many of them to make it to Saints 1st team and be very successful

McQueen and McCarthy both look decent, McQueen has a lot of first teamers in front of him though. Seager needs to go out on loan to a side which plays to his strengths, being with us is doing him no favours now. I rate Sims too, but he's lightweight (though not to Hesketh levels) and again, lots of established players in his position. Plus, I rated Jake Thomson. Baird of the land Posted 5 August, 2015 Share Posted 5 August, 2015 I'd like to see Mcqueen given an opportunity, so hoping we don't bring back the like of Elia.

Donatello Posted 5 August, 2015 Share Posted 5 August, 2015 Hesketh, for sure (in spite of his frame). Classy (potential) player.
Saint Charlie Posted 5 August, 2015 Author Share Posted 5 August, 2015 Seems based on most opinions that for the next 2 years the output from the Academy will be fairly limited. Shows that we have been so lucky the past 5 years, and also that the 50% vision is exactly that. We could easily name a PL team of all non British players this season. Hopefully they will fast track some of the younger ones through.
