Academy coaching in the new Staplewood training dome

At least one of the youth sides are staying at Winchester College at the moment. I was watching them train (should have been working) and they look phenomenal. Very well mannered bunch of lads too. Teams who have training stays at the college normally play a match there at the end of the week, so I may have to go and watch that as well.

I know one of those kids in that first video. He is the goalkeeper and is is ridiculously good for his age. The Eastleigh team he plays for is incredible. In fact they have so many good players they decided to make one team that is just boys who are at Saints, leaving no room for the kids at Chelsea and Bournemouth.

His Mum is nuts though, always going on about how he'll be earning her loads of money when he's a pro. Chances are she'll end up disappointed.

A mum I know has just had her boy selected to go to Saints. Bournemouth also want him. Hes only 6 or 7. All she bangs on about is how much money he'll make and how she can't wait for him to go to Man United like Luke Shaw. Terrible attitude.

One of the other Mum's at Eastleigh (whose son is at Chelsea and goes to school with my son) had an older kid who went through Saints, Bournemouth and Pompey academys from the age of 8. Got to 15 and was released, no one wanted him anymore.

His younger brother was scouted by Chelsea at 6 while kicking a ball around at the side of the pitch as his brother played. Mental.

Lots of Academies these days hoover up kids rather than identify talent. They basically invite lots of kids to training sessions (the kids and parents get all excited and think they've been 'scouted') and the clubs keep the kids until they work out whether they are good enough or not, rather than working out if they are good enough or not and then inviting them. Every Sunday down at Powerleague Trafford half the pitches are rented by Manchester United and the nippers are out there playing football - some of them are awful but Man Utd just take them on to stop other clubs doing the same regardless of talent. I would estimate that Man Utd alone have thousands of U9's at these training sessions. It's crazy.
