It's the way society is going nowadays. Look at the wittering on about the lie that is the "gender pay gap" and using Male film stars to try and make a comparison with female film stars. The entire thing is ludicrous but in sport it becomes more obviously false because in general the men at the top of their sport will most likely vastly outperform the equivalent female. You can't speak the truth in public now due to the hysterical reactions- just look at how Mcenroe was crucified for saying what we all know- all the top males would destroy the top females.

What does it matter if males "destroy" females? No one bats an eyelid (and rightly so) about pay equality anymore, but when it comes to sport all the old prejudices come out. We even have the resident TSW dinosaur calling women "birds" and no one picks him up on it. Looking forward to you next statement when you say you are more entitled to an opinion on this because your wife's auntie is a woman! Women footballers will always earn less than men because it has a greater commercial draw. That is fair enough. Market forces are one thing, men "destroying" women another.

As usual, you've waded in without having a clue what you are talking about. John Mcenroe was asked in an interview about Serena Williams. He replied that she was in his opinion the greatest female tennis player of all time. He was then asked why he didn't call her the greatest ever tennis player and he answered the question he was asked by giving his opinion that due to biological differences it is likely that Serena would struggle to beat the 700th ranked male- the implication being that she would get thrashed by any of the top ten men. No one claimed that this performance difference "matters" but pointing it out when answering a question is not some egregious act. Mcenroe answered a question asked of him with a perfectly legitimate reply but was subsequently crucified by a certain section of the press and others who willfully misinterpreted what he said in an attempt to paint him as a sexist.

Women deserve success and popularity in sport and shouldn't ordinarily be compared to male accomplishments in sport like the BBC keeps trying to do. The US radio host who asked McEnroe that question is part of the media that continually tries to compare male and female sporting accomplishments and then gets annoyed when they receive an answer they don't approve of, even though McEnroe is entirely correct with what he says. I think the quote from Ronda Rousey sums up my thoughts quite well on the pay disparity:

"I think how much you get paid should have something to do with how much money you bring in. I'm the highest paid fighter not because Dana (White) and Lorenzo (Fertitta) wanted to do something nice for the ladies," she says sarcastically. "They do it because I bring in the highest numbers."
