Bananaman Posted 28 July, 2015 Share Posted 28 July, 2015 Hello. Always find some interesting new books/films when discussing this in groups (my mates are wild like that) so thought I'd extend it to you lovely lot: If you were on your death-bed and had to recommend one book and one film what would they be? (browny points for explanation why)

sadoldgit Posted 29 July, 2015 Share Posted 29 July, 2015 Book: The Trial by Kafka. Loved the dark paranoia. Film: Seen it so many times but never get tired of it - Zulu. There is something very stirring about a group of men facing ridiculous odds and coming through and more stiff upper lips than you'd find at a Viagra tasting event. Not to mention the start of a great career for a certain Michael Cain.
buctootim Posted 29 July, 2015 Share Posted 29 July, 2015 (edited) If you were on your death-bed and had to recommend one book and one film what would they be? (browny points for explanation why) Wouldn't you have other more pressing things to think about on your deathbed? I love the film Fargo - fantastic blend of black humour and just the right amount of pathos. Cohen Bros best film imo. Three Colours Blue is fantastic too, moving, draws you in. Not so many laughs though... Cant nominate a book. Genuinely cant recall any that have moved me in the same way as film, shallow I know. bridge too far Posted 29 July, 2015 Share Posted 29 July, 2015 Film - tough but between Singing in the Rain, Chicago and Lawrence of Arabia Book - Sarum by Edward Rutherfurd or Ragged Trousered Philanthropist by Robert Tressell I'll have to die slowly! Block 18 Posted 29 July, 2015 Share Posted 29 July, 2015 Film - Difficult to choose But I'll opt for Martin Scorsese's Raging Bull. Book - Something lighthearted so Any one of Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels if it has to be one then Men at Arms
FloridaMarlin Posted 29 July, 2015 Share Posted 29 July, 2015 Book - The Long Goodbye, Raymond Chandler. Although written in the 1940s, still atmospheric, great dialogue, brilliant plot and displays the vulnerability of Chandler's hard-bitten hero. My favourite boo. I read it every year and always find something new in it. Film - Open Range. Just the best Western ever.
Evil Monkey Posted 29 July, 2015 Share Posted 29 July, 2015 Film - True Romance. Book - Game of Thrones (or whatever the books are called.) Haven't read them but the TV series is fantastic.
CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 29 July, 2015 Share Posted 29 July, 2015 Book > Well when I first read 'Empire of the Sun' by J.G.Ballard I thought it was the best novel that I'd ever read. Two decades (and a great many good books) later I see little reason to change my mind - although having said that 'The Deathbird Stories' by Harlan Ellison runs it pretty damn close. Film > An impossible question as there are so many great films out there that I love. So how about 'Blade Runner' then, or 'Aliens' maybe. Sidney Lumet's 'Failsafe' sure leaves a mark on you while 'Das Boot' is a magnificent achievement by any standard. 'Wages of Fear' blew my mind and 'Psycho' is a masterpiece from the best film-maker who ever lived ... but there again is 'Vertigo' a even better Hitchcock film perhaps? How on earth can I omit 'Terminator II Judgement Day' from the list as I adore it so? No, I think I'll just say 'To Kill A Mockingbird' is my final answer to both questions and leave it there ..... for now
aintforever Posted 29 July, 2015 Share Posted 29 July, 2015 Book - I tend to read military history, so it would probably be Enemy Coast Ahead which was written by one of the Dam Buster pilots or Operation Mincemeat. Both fascinating accounts of ordinary people doing the extraordinary in war time. Vulcan 571 is also up there. Film - Shawshank Redemption or my new favourite Argo. ecuk268 Posted 29 July, 2015 Share Posted 29 July, 2015 Book: The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck Film: Godfather II or Goodfellas or Far From The Madding Crowd (the original with Alan Bates and Julie Christie). I believe that they're re-making it.
mcjwills Posted 29 July, 2015 Share Posted 29 July, 2015 Book - Under the Eagle by Simon Scarrow. Love a good hystorical yarn. Film - has always been a toss up between Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile
Hamilton Saint Posted 29 July, 2015 Share Posted 29 July, 2015 Film - True Romance. Book - Game of Thrones (or whatever the books are called.) Haven't read them but the TV series is fantastic. This is meant as satire, right?
vince Posted 29 July, 2015 Share Posted 29 July, 2015 Book - The Collector, John Fowles Film - too many to decide from, but Shawshank is right up there alongside "MLT and how I saved the Saints", although that was a relatively local weekly documentary in the late 80's/early 90's that not too many people outside of SO postcodes would be aware of....... Lord Duckhunter Posted 29 July, 2015 Share Posted 29 July, 2015 Film would be "The last waltz " , the greatest rock film ever made . My book would also have a rock theme" Bill Graham presents " . The auto biography Bill was working on at the time of his death , finished off by someone else using interviews and stuff from the likes of Garcia & Jagger . Amazing story , from escaping the nazis as a German Jew to becoming rocks greatest impresario . Great stuff .

Both fascinating accounts of ordinary people doing the extraordinary in war time. Vulcan 571 is also up there. Film - Shawshank Redemption or my new favourite Argo. Likewise. The last three books I've read have been Parachute Infantry by David Webster (one of the real 'Band of Brothers' men), also the memoirs of British First World War officer Maurice Graffet Neal, and I'm currently reading an account of the First World War called Storm of Steel written by German officer Ernst Junger. These three accounts I could not recommend highly enough. As you can see, I like first hand autobiographical accounts of War. I've been wondering for a while what my next book would be based on that, might have to give Enemy Coast Ahead a go as it sounds up my street. Back on topic, and despite what I have written above, whilst I would highly recommend those, I think the book I would choose would be Nineteen Eighty-Four by Orwell. The film would probably be Kevin & Perry Go Large.

You recommended something that you haven't read ... because "the TV series is fantastic". No, that doesn't offend me. I just find it rather ... um ... funny!
