The Ron Vlaar rumour ...again !

Let's face it, Ronald Koeman has seen a lot of players in his previous clubs (and many Dutch ones, of course), but now plenty of us are going to say ....

...why Ron Vlaar ?..he's already 30 ...and injury-prone. isn't a that a big gamble. Of course we don't know that there is any truth in this " rumour "..

Those two facts are undeniable, but a player of his experience - even with those negatives, might be a valuable signing - on a free transfer and with a view to a possible Euro campaign this season. If we get past Vitesse and get into a group....we'll need real experience later in the season.

Lazio seem to have backed down on their interest for Vlaar (according to the Express)... and maybe he doesn't have too many choices left ?.

I don't see Vlaar as a 38 game-a-season player, and we do have other options; Yoshida, Gardos, and Turnbull and Stephens knocking on the door.

Note:

Arsenal, Chelsea and Man U. made no secret of the fact they had different team line-ups for Premier League games and those in European competitions.

From the echo an interview with Les Reed

Below is the bit that I think means we won't be seeing Vlaar (or any other twilight of their career type players) at Saints

So I have seen teams who want to supplement their squad going for experienced players, players who’ve played Champions League or Europa League before, but are now in their 30s, thinking ‘Well, that’s alright, because now he’s in his 30s he’s cheaper anyway. We’ve got a top Italian player who’s now within our budget.’ "Actually, they get injured more often and it doesn’t actually do what you intended it to do, so we’ve planned all that quite carefully.

Found this on an Irish website.

Ron Vlaar was hot property last summer having had a good World Cup. However, he was never that big of a superstar at Aston Villa and his under-par 2014/15 season only proved that. Vlaar lost the Captain's arm band when Paul Lambert was sacked in February and Tim Sherwood came in to rescue the club's season. But, whilst some of the Villa Park faithful would testify that their centre back was never what the hype and paper talk suggested, even the most cynical wouldn't have expected these sort of stats.

Opta stats from Oulala.com show just how ineffective the Netherlands international was last season.

He averaged 0.55 tackles per game in the Premier League.

That's right: Ron Vlaar was making a tackle every two games for Villa in the league. His stats were that shocking that even Mario Balotelli was winning more tackles per game. Raheem Sterling too. Vlaar is now a free agent, his contract having expired, but, with form like this, he might not have a crowd of clubs lining up for his signature

If you're going to post this useless piece of crap passing for analysis everywhere I'll have to point out it's a useless piece of crap passing for analysis, everywhere.

. “The person with the most tackles means nothing.

“We’re after clever defenders who intercept and have the right starting positions. They maximise their efficiency by not running around the pitch trying to lunge in and tackle everyone, but by trying to just intercept key passes because they’re keeping in shape.”

This is a forum, a place for conversation. Seeing as people were talking about Ron Vlaar it seemed topical. I'm not claiming that it's a great piece of journalism, it's just topical and may have been of interest to some people. Sorry, I wasn't aware that things had to meet with your seal of approval before being posted.
