Squad numbers 15-16

[Over land and sea]

Nothing confirmed yet but the players appeared to be wearing squad numbers (without names on their shirts) today - giving an indication of the likely numbers for most of the new players. Most of last season's squad were unchanged on last year.

 

The new players wore:

 

2 Cédric Soares

4 Jordy Clasie

15 Cuco Martina

20 Juanmi

22 Stekelenburg

14 Josh Debayo (new to first team)

 

Players with different numbers to last season:

 

17 (was 38 ) Sam McQueen

26 (was 36) Jordan Turnbull

24 (was 35) Jack Stephens

I don't think we can regard the numbers as definitive - I doubt Debayo will get 14 for example - but it's probably accurate for the new signings. If the numbers were all correct, that does indeed leave just 13 and 18 free until you get to 29, with at least one new signing to come (and Ramirez will need a number if he stays).

 

If Stephens' number is confirmed that may indicate Mayuka's exit as he's been number 24 since his arrival.

I've just had a look and I'm 99% sure those numbers will be accurate. With Gaston shipped out last season and apparently shopping in Gunwharf this afternoon I think it's fair to say he won't need a number. 13 or 18 for the CB and maybe Ramirez if needed, I guess.

 

Good spot re: Mayuka - he hasn't been around pre-season has he? Pretty sure his groin was ok by the end of last season so he's not injured and there were rumours of a contract buy-out after a rogue tweet.

It's a weird one, he had a brief "goodbye" tweet at the end of the season, but Saints haven't announced he's been released and he was no more than 3/5ths through his contract, and no longer injured. And now someone else wearing his squad number. Fairly sure he's gone but again, nothing actually said.
